Thankfully no lives have been lost, and my heart goes out to those that have lost homes.

With all of fires raging in the worst possible conditions, it dumbfounds me how d!ckh3#d$ can still throw lit cigarettes out of car windows >:(

A friend just watched a P plater do this in front of him :o

He got the rego and is contacting police.

Maybe I should have put this in the daily rant section?

The friends we do our big trips with live in Winmalee. The husband got home (just) and managed to get his kids from the inlaws who got them from school for him. As of 30 minutes ago the wife is still not home as she can't get there and is with friends. The houses opposite theirs back onto the bush though I don't know if their area is directly affected.  They are very lucky compared to others.

Thoughts with all who are impacted by the fires.

We were very lucky. Here are some pics.

This is at the bottom right of the yard. The cubby was just burnt and you can see where the fire was burning in our yard but our Tenant decided to stay and put that out

These next two are at the very bottom right of our property and this is the other side of the Valley where all the houses are lost. You can see there is only a few metres from our yard

This house is, was next door at the bottom of our yard.

This is how lucky we were. The leaves were scorched on our roof

This is the house at the bottom of the yard in the pic.

This is the street where you are hearing about all the losses. This is 1 house from our place.

Very lucky, your tenant needs a big thanks for staying to fight the fire.

I think you need to give the tenants a month free rent
for a remarkable job on saving your house

Yea, they are good and they have been there for four years. They do quite well out of us and to be honest, as Chris said - It was his dog he went back for and their gear which is all we cared about - them. For us there is nothing there of ours any more and we are well insured.

I feel for the others really as they have lost every thing. It is a great community so they will rebuild but just shows how things can change.

Anyway, will be there in a week so I'll get some more footage then

Explosives exercise may have started fires

As the Blue Mountains bushfire was upgraded to emergency status, the Department of Defence was forced to concede on Saturday that it might have been responsible for starting the blaze. Defence has confirmed it is exploring the circumstances of the State Mine Fire near Lithgow, which has destroyed more than 30,000 hectares.

The fire started on October 16, the same day Defence personnel held an explosive ordnance training activity at the Marangaroo Training Area. Defence said on Saturday it was investigating whether the two events were "linked".

That doesn't surprise me lost. Railways are another culprit of starting fires over the years. Lost count of the amount of fires I went to between mt Victoria and bell, cause by the railways grinding machine, or just workers repairing the rails

That's the Lithgow fire. The Winmallee /Springwood fire is looking like power lines coming down in the winds.

Well, they're following a bookload of SOP's and filling so much paper work they don't have time or the ability to use common sense any more.

Oh sorry, my manual didn't have that bit in it and or I wasn't trained in that or told not to.
What??? you expected me to think about it. That wasn't in the meeting minutes or job criteria. I don't get paid enough to do that.
Perhaps if my mother breastfed me longer, or my PE teacher had pushed me so hard.
Also the greengrocer yelled at me when I was 9.

I need counselling and a house and a lifetime pension. Now about that 6 months stress leave I'm entitled to........

God love our burning plains............

Next rant will be about the lack of ability to backburn...............OH YEAH!!!!!

Brian

Yes. Look at the video I posted in the previous one. The lines came down and that's what happens. No point blaming any one for those ones unless we are all ready to pay for power lines to be pout under ground. We are going that in Broome due to Cyclones but it cost a lot so we all need to decide.

As with Steve and Viv, we used to live at Winmalee for 20 odd years, lived through a few fire storms, but its been heart breaking watching what has been happening to that community from afar.  Been constantly on the phone to family and friends. The fire moved so quickly.  I was on-line having alook at the Lithgow fire, as once it gets down in the Grose Valley, they usually pop out on the Springwood side of the valley about a week later.  I saw the RFS put up the Springwood fire.  Within 2-3 hours, it had jumped Nepean River near Penrith, but before hand it had  run down through Singles Ridge Road and into Yellow Rock. It is only a miracle that nobody was killed in this fire. All the schools went into lock down and looked after their students. I have good friends who live in Winmalee and they said the Fireries did an awesome job for what they had in front of them and how quick the fire ran. There are alot of people I know and have worked with that have lost everything, except the clothes on their back.  They are resilant people up there and will get through this.

This video gives you an idea of what the fireries were dealing with. They are heading out to Yellow Rock.

Yep and maybe that's a decision they need to review. It's alright saying it cost a lot but so does 190 homes, so does the NBN, school halls, laptops, even stb for old people. The problem is the power companies are now privatized and there priorities are altered. We have underground power at Faulconbridge its been in for 14 yrs because the council made the developer do it. But around the corner they just spent a month re doing the poles and laying new cable, through a narrow heavily tree portion of road!.  In 94 they dug up the mountains to put gas through and then sewer, opertunity lost me thinks. Infrastructure Forethought is sadly lacking in Australia. and yes i am aware of other issues with underground power such as heat.e

You also get a lot more cable losses, which means you have to use larger cables or higher voltages (ie, more cost).
You have the higher installation costs due to the required trenching.
You also have the eventual replacement costs as cables only have a service life of 20-30 years, whereas timber poles can last that long and are relatively cheap to replace or if you go to a little extra expense concrete poles can last a lot longer.

I'm not saying it shouldn't be done, but overhead is a lot cheaper and everything comes down to a price.

Steve, Deb's parents are good at the moment. My mum has been lucky. Cant say the same for a few other friends, but they are not hurt, which is the main thing. :)
