I was proven wrong
Driving home with the camper from Dongara we were following a Nissan Patrol with a kimberly camper behind up a hill both of us on around 90kph and then.....
Bang and the most black smoke i have ever seen out of a tail pipe i mean i first thought he had a fire in the back. Pulled over to see if he was OK and the poor bastard was just about in tears. I dont know what went but even with the engine off there was smoke weeping out the tail pipe

its ok, they fixed it in the 2018 model.

In Fairness... the 'grenade' problems are pretty much gone from when the CRD motor was introduced (2005?)
The only time you run into the overboosting etc on the CRD motors is when you start modifying it (exhaust, chip etc) which is easily avoided with some other modifications.

I will show this to a mate who has one and thinks it won't happen to him, maybe now he will listen and install the anti grenade devices ie exhaust temp gauge etc
-
Poor Bugger. Unfortunately this is what happens when you try to extract this much power from one of these 3L wonderdiesels, they tend to be a bit high strung. I have a 1KZ-TE (96kw stock, 112 with the DTRONIC chip): not regarded as any sort of powerhouse, and it constantly surprises me with the EGT/temps it can produce. I can't recommend enough the fitting of EGT/boost/coolant temp gauges so you can see what is going on inside. One dalliance with 14psi of boost took the cylinder head out on mine immediately.

They may have got the problem a bit more under control, but the CRDI ones are still not immune to it.....I know of 2 people who have the CRDI and have had the same old piston problem !!

These are usually bog stock... no exhaust no chip no nothing.
The most Shit thing is Nissans response from day 1 to the whole issue over years.
There was a bloke on patrol forum whose blew up on way home from buying it used (theres been a dozen or more on Ebay in the years too)..
He had a $35,000 block of Shit in the driveway... he sold it on ebay for $8,000 as he couldn't afford the repairs.. They should never have let the issue get this bad for that long.
One massive fix was to cut the dipstick shorter so you put more oil in it... :(

Tell him to head over to the patrol forum mate. Plenty of stories over there, and a great source on 'nads' also, but even that is still not a 100% given that everything will be fine. I have the Zd30di and I know one day it will happen, but the car was also in my price bracket at the time, ( I'm not rich enough to own a landcruiser ;D ;D). Lol

Not having a personal attack here but when these posts appear those fence sitters who like the ruggedness of the patrol and the cheap price of the 3lt and we're not sure May be swayed to by one.
The engine is crap. Full stop. End of story. Why bother taking the risk if you don't already have one?
If your at the pub and your drunk mate starts chatting up the local drunk skank bike you look after him and gently lead him away. Same with 3L patrols.

Are you rich enough to afford a new engine? :D
Unfortunately the 'old wives tales' are in fact true.
But a Patrol with a blown donk is a good place to install an LSX or a GM diesel ;D
and: well said dazzler!

I knew what I was buying.
gee tee,(I was having a laugh) I also said at the time it fitted my price range, it has a new motor, it may still blow, If it does, I will cross that bridge then. It my be replaced with another 3l, I can get new long motor for 7g not 12, or I might go stuff it, and drop a duramax in it. But in the mean time it does what it needs to do.
Cheers
-
Yeah this happened to me in the middle of Kakadu. NOT fun. the only time i had no phone signal and no one on the 2 way.
we ended up getting picked up by a Japanese Toyota sales rep. couldn't speak much English. but told me to buy a land cruiser....
Engine revved to 4000rpm wouldn't stop, smoke everywhere and i managed to stop it but too late cracked pistons block etc...

yeah oldmate I knew you were wearing a grin - hence my smiley in my post.
But unfortunately for many others who buy a Nissan based on price, there is little reason to smile :(

Well that's crossed the Patrol off my list finally.

I have just bought a new GU Patrol which we pick up in a fortnight and did so knowing "the risk". Ultimately each car has "risk" of a problem somewhere and it is an each to their own decision. Here is my thought process.
Google any car and you will read about problems if it isn't engines it is drivetrain or something else. My other hobby is motorsport and it is not dissimilar to the Subaru STI (grenade) engines versus Mitsubishi Evo drivetrain but I am still yet to pop my Subie despite the amount of time it has spent on track. I figured with the Patrol I would run the 'gamble' on the 3L CRD over the Cruiser Diffs & IFS axles/CV joints as examples. Reading the Patrol4x4 forum the CRD grenade issues don't seem to be prevalent like the early DIDs with many achieving high mileage and they have been around for approximately 5 years now.
My family has owned about 7 patrols over the years and other than some clutch issues in one that were resolved under warranty we have never had a problem with any of them, granted most were GQs with the TD42. The last one was a 2004 DID that spent the first 5 years of its life doing 60% of its km with 3.5t worth of boat behind it. It then spent most of its weekends 20m from the waters edge at the boat ramp getting covered in salt spray. The last few years it spent parked in the driveway exposed to the elements as newer cars took priority. After all this it had no rust something that can't be said for the hiluxes & cruisers we have had in much shorter time frames. It was sold, same day as listed, about 12 months ago without having had one issue ever and for $30k which makes for only a 40% depreciation over 8 years. As a grenade it was a let down, as an 4wd it has probably been the most practical, competent and economical allrounder we've ever had.
For this purchase I wanted to have something (preferably with solid axles all round) that could tow, be very competent offroad and still be comfortable to drive on a day to day basis. I looked with absolute open mind at cruisers both 70 & 200, Prado, Wrangler, Grand Cherokee and settled back on the Patrol. The thing that came closest was the 200 series with some Altitudes floating around for high $80k as the likely model to settle on. I opted against it as 'round town' driving is minimal for us and for the price difference between it and a Patrol we could buy a new VW golf GTI as a buzz around car. It also means I don't have to risk or scratch up the best part of six figures whilst 4wding.
Something else that should be remembered is registration costs which doesn't affect NSW. In Qld though, rego is based on number of cylinders not GVM and so a CRD Patrol costs the same as a Yaris whereas something like the cruiser V8 costs considerably more.
-
or I might go stuff it, and drop a duramax in it.
just dont get it fitted by the "expert" bloke in Qld... Vinces with 3 states of tune upto a *detuned* 300rwkw sounds great, but ask him - the whole thing has been a ****in nightmare including catching fire, and a gearbox going south.
-

Interesting personal attack. Unusual behaviour for you.
No I have not owned a 3l patrol.
I am however a diesel mechanic and maintain links with fleet and friends in the game. Can u point me in the direction of a Uni that is running a masters course on the subject so I may make comment into the future.
PS read all my posts. There is a fantastic patrol and it's fitted with a reliable, powerful and sweet engine. It's just not a diesel and sadly most people have no understanding of working out true running costs of vehicles and only look at diesel.
PS. I am not an accountant but have managed fleet. I have complete done accounting unit at Uni. Did you want me to scan it to support my comment?

X2. Very happy with our Pajero and would highly recommend not discounting it off the list simply due to the fact it doesn't have the same "status" as a land cruiser or patrol

Definitely not wives tales.
There was a period of three to four years that were very susceptible for the classic grenade...ie holed pistons so on and so on. The later models while still have some issues aren't normally the classic "Grenade" when the pin is pulled.
More of a land mine.
If your going to buy one go into it with your eyes wiiiide open and do your research. If it is something that will always be in the back of your mind worrying about...run.
Me...I'll take my chances and enjoy while I can

Whats DM?
So lets get to the bottom of this.
Am I supposed to make comment on this or not.
Is not owning a particular vehicle mean that you are prohibited from commenting on it. If so then lets ditch the mechanical thread and just post on vehicle specific forums?
So why the sarcasm?

May I ask what a LSX donk is, I just googled it and found too many answers to figure out what it is.
Thanks
It's an all-alloy pushrod GM petrol V8: the LS1 was launched in 1997 in the C5 Corvette (and was adopted in the Holden V-car - Commodore Statesman etc) in 1999. There have been revised/bigger/more powerful versions (LS2, LS3 etc) so rev-heads call them LS 'X' as they are based on the same architecture and take many of the same parts
There is also an iron-block version used in trucks/pickups.
They are good for swaps as they are torquey, efficient and long-lived
Hope this helps

18mnths of research never swayed us. If thinking about a Di model, would recommend jumping on the patrol forums and sift through the info available. Very comfortable in our decision with a few precautionary measures taken. On the other hand you will also find stories of 300-400thou on the 3l Di and still going, and upon asking the owners when did they install NADS, they reply with "what's NADS" I still wouldn't go into one with the it won't happen to me attitude.
Research any vehicle and you will find horror stories.

Whaaat?? She's a sure thing. Cut his grass and get in there yourself.. ;D
Seriously though, if 3.0 Di models didn't blow up I'd have nothing to put a TD42ti into.

And that is the reality of it. Yes the old ZD30 got the hand grenade name for good reason but to continually insult all the modern 3.0l Patrol owners is getting tired.
Same thing happens in the Motorbike industry, a manufacturer makes a lemon so of course everything they make in future is called a lemon by all the online experts regardless of how good it is.
We are starting to get a lot of the same old bashing threads and more and more arm chair experts around here. I think before the so called experts hit the reply button, regardless if it is a thread about electrical, imported campers, a certain 4wd or suspension, perhaps they should think to themselves, if I owned <insert whatever in here> and someone said what I am about to say, would I be insulted?? I am probably guilty of it myself in the past, but in future Ill be making a concerted effort to think about what I am saying before I say it. I am not a 3.0l owner by the way, but I know plenty of them who are more than happy and get insulted everytime some toss walks past and says "hahaha hand grenade mate"
Its one thing to try and offer some advice to help a person but its another thing to burn, bag, rubbish something to that person. Any manufacturer on here that burns, bags and rubbishes another product is not worth a POS in my opinion, obviously I am not reffering to this thread in particular but the forum has many that do just that. Its nice to see someone feel strongly about something and voice their opinion on how they like to do things, but when it then turns into running everyone else's 'way of doing things' down because its not how you do it, then me and most people like me are instantly turned away. Just my opinion of course :)

Bravo Danny!!!
We've got A Disco 1 which has been over a lot of Oz, Gibb, Gunbarrel, Simmo, High Country etc & the amount of bagging I get & people "In the Know" telling me I won't make it here or there is amazing & amazingly wrong. However, I know what the vehicle & more importantly, what I can do, so it doesn't worry me. By the way, I also have a 4.2 T/Diesel 'Cruiser ute. Wanna know what's better off road >:D >:D ?

I love this forum for its wealth of knowledge and people willing to help, HOWEVER I often find myself holding back from contributing because I really don't want to enter these arguments.

My research was about 18months too before we picked one, 245k on the clock and loving it, only had the patrol now for just over a year, never bothered with NADS some say i should with the Di motor but im just more aware of how hard to push my patrol.
We only opted for the Patrol because it come in auto with the diesel whereas the LC only had petrol auto.
Got to say that we test drove around 50 patrols and LC 100's and by far the best we found was the one we are driving, we also looked at petrol versions but the economy was horrible, my wife almost talked me into a prado but it was a 4 week wait on it from the dealership for repairs and ad-dons.
Am i worried about Grenade? yea i guess everyone who owns one would be.
We tend to keep our cars for 1-2 years at most before trading them in and getting something else.
So maybe wife might get her prado in due time.

Now go wash your mouth out with soap !!! ;D
The LS series of engines refers to Gen 111 and Gen IV engines. LS1 through to something like LS7 or some crap now. Correct, there are iron and alloy block versions from about 5L through to 7L. But that's beside the point as they are just std crappy GM small blocks.
Soooo...... about 6 or 7 years ago, GM release the new Bowtie Block, named LSX. It's a cast iron, siamesed bore, 6 bolt/cylinder configuration, (std LS are 4. Even Gen I and II small blocks were 5. WTF were they thinking ??? ) forged doweled mains, genuine priority mains oiling and the best part, they can be drilled out to 4.2" bore size capable of 500 cubes and still hold up to 40 psi from a kick arse pair of spinning carburettors. ;D (OK, they don't hold it for long. A lot of Shit breaks)
GM then decided to slap some together and sell them as Bowtie crate engines, using the LSX block. They were/are waaaay over priced pieces of snot only capable of around 900 or so HP.
With the said mentioned kick arse spinning carburettors, a touch over 2000hp is achievable with an LSX block filled with aftermarket goodies. Or so I'm told ;D

X2. Very happy with our Pajero and would highly recommend not discounting it off the list simply due to the fact it doesn't have the same "status" as a land cruiser or patrol
X3 Very happy with our NT Paj. Virtually bulletproof engine and drivetrain, and puts out more power and torque than the diesel Patrol and Prado.
