Title: What's the best overweight car & trailer combo you've seen
Post by: Pete_R on September 22, 2013, 08:01:17 PM
Just drove from Sydney to Gold Coast on Friday afternoon & Saturday morning. On Friday saw a Ford Falcon wagon towing a car trailer loaded with a Pajero. Saturday morning saw another overweight rig.... This time a Subaru Forester with a Patrol trayback loaded on the trailer.
Mind you, still doesnt beat the setup i saw many many years ago. Its was a nissan Bluebird towing a fully laden double horse float - the back of the bluebird was literally 2 inches off the road

One of our stores had an old Mitsubishi ute and a flat top tandem trailer. Ute had a towing capacity of 1500kg, trailer weighed about 800kg empty. The driver of the ute used to complain to me that the brakes didn't work on the ute. When they put 4 packs of 6m pine on the trailer it wouldn't pull up. 1 pack of pine is around 1500kg......

Think some people should have listened in maths class.

Hi,

Back in the 80's in Zimbabwe, I had a Morris 1000, A mate had a big mercedes benz which had a engine problem and I wound up towing the merc back to his place with the morris 1000, good thing it was fairly flat as the morris 1000 was working hard, it would have been a bit above the towing capacity of the morris.

He wound up the but of a few jokes getting his merc towed by a old morris 1000

a mate of mine bought a chemist store fitout in NSW a few years back, and along with a dual axle cage trailer and his AU XR8 ute, he somehow managed 7.8 rolling tonnes from Sydney to Melbourne...

XR8 is a Herrod special, uprated to 1.5 tonne, and apparently towed the trailer without any issues...   but terrible economy!!

the good old black spur, usually get slowed by something, either a truck or a city slicker on their first country drive..

We used to tow a horse float with 2 big horses in it, using a Torana LH...

x2 on the nomads.. most I saw were ok..

around here its ppl overloading their trailers with firewood during that season, then for all those ppl with small water tanks they overload their poor little 6x4 box trailers with a ton of water. using one of those 1000lt plastic water tanks.. or hay, over loading the utes and trailer carrying HAY..

a guy came to me last year, said his trailer had a bent axle, asked if I could fix it for him.. yes the axle was bent, the tyre blew, rubbed on the side of the trailer, so wrecked that too. he tried to lift up the ttrailer with his tractor, using the tie down rail, so that was bent to buggery too.

I stripped it all down  after collecting it and bringing it to my workshop, got him to buy axle hubs etc from where he bought the trialer from, yes it was a new trailer.  and I fitted them.. the reason i asked him to buy the parts was cos I took his old axle down to my local rip off trailer place but on the wway got a ticket from the cops for not having a number plate on the back of my trailer. and they would have had to order the axle etc. so it would be quicker for him to pickk them up as he lives in melb and has a weekender up here.

sso I dont know how much the total fix up cost, but I had to charge him for my ticket and a little to cover the fuel  of the pickup but couldnt charge him much more, so I did the job for the love of the trailers..
he was happy with the repairs and promised he would not abuse his trailer again.

ohh well, so i made my new offroad trailer then sold that little trailer of mine..

Many years ago my mates HQ 1 tonner broke down on the F3. He was towed off to some small town that I can't remember the name of.

Asked for my assistance to get his ute back to Newcastle.

So in the wifes L series 85 4wd touring wagon towed the ute home on al the back roads we could find. Through that part of the central coast meant steep hill after steep hill.

Due to the width of the rims and tyres on his ute had to put the ute on forwardsplacing a crap load of weight on the rear lifting the front significantly.( rmember it is front wheel drive)    :o One stage even had to wack it into 4wd on the road just to get traction.   :-X
The drive home was very unerving, one finger steer,  :o couldn't go over 70 km per hour  :police: as the trailer would sway.

Never again :-[.

Cheers, Chris

Many years ago I was working as the service manager for a caravan dealer and had to move a 30 foot triple axle caravan a couple of kms to a storage yard

The only vehicle in the place at the time with a tow bar was a mini moke (1000cc motor I think) and yes I did tow it and caused a minor upset in the Brookvale area of

Sydney. My only excuse is I was very young. STUPIDITY RULES !!!!!! (I think the caravan weighed in at around 2 1/2 tons)

I saw a Hyundai i20 towing a camper trailer north bound on the Pacific Highway, before turning off onto the Gateway Motorway. Tow hitch was only inches off the ground!

Years ago we had a 34' bogie axle semi trailer with a dolly on it that we would tow around the farm with an 8 tonne Ford truck at seeding time with a 6 tonne bulk seeder sitting on the trailer.
One year the paddocks just got to wet for the old 2wd drive Ford truck.
So we improvised and hooked our Nissan Patrol GU 4.2 turbo diesel onto the trailer. Just put her into low range and towed the trailer around for the rest of the planting season.
Definitely not recommended but it got us out of trouble.

Have seen many things over the years, generally it has been at accident scenes and many of them, unfortunately fatals.  If people only treated that little bit of steel poking out the back of the car with some respect it would be so much better.

The most memorable one, that is laughable because it didn't end with any injuries, just a jack knife and a bruised ego, was an LJUBLJANA Torana, 6cyl towing a 30ft tri axle caravan, jak knifed trying to turn left wen surprise surprise, the van didn't want to change direction!

I went 195 tonne over the weigh bridge in a triple road train carting gold ore north of Kalgoolie. Truck was legal for 126 tonne. Just a tad over. Only drove on haul road though. Wouldn't do it on the main road.

Years ago when I was working in PNG often, it was the place for these great stories, and sadly I missed this one, did see some of the results though.

The troops were on the job of pressure cleaning, but the mains supply could not keep up with the high volume, high pressure pump, so the white man boss sent the troops up the hill to the yard to grab a 2,000 liter water tank to use as a reservoir to feed the pump.
He sent 3 blokes in an old FJ45 ute, drum brakes were in attendance all round, but working as they should was an option. Normally it is fine, just leave it in low gear.

Sadly the White man boss failed to tell the troops to EMPTY the tank prior to placing it upon the back of the ute.
Thankfully the troops were not injured, but everyone did get to see what it takes for a black man to be white as white can be. The driver left it in low range 2nd and apparently the engine revs could be heard for miles.

Best i seen was bout six months ago. The bloke didnt even get to tow the car. Was driving my truck on the way to syd. Was stopped at some rd works just outside of blackheath near the caravan parking area some people will know where i'm talking bout. A bloke tired loading a 200 series landcruiser onto an au falcon ute. He drove it up got the back wheel just on the ramp, the back of the au lifted of the ground and the ute rolled down the hill into a tree. Unlucky or stupidity i dont know but brighetned my day a bit lol.

Few years ago at Glen Innes stopped for brekky early one morning and was a Qld registered XF sedan used as a removal van. Old mate had opened boot, taken back seat out and slid some 3 x 2's in and tucked them under the front seats, nailed on some ply on the overhang - viola, a Ute. The "tray" protruded 1.2m out the back then loaded about 1.5m high. Plus about another 1.0m on roof rack. Inside stuffed full with room for one. I checked vehicle and it was warm and had obviously been driven under lights.
