Title: Ten days in Tassie
Post by: Chesapeake on September 10, 2013, 06:38:18 PM
Righto, had a post on here last week about being made redundant from the job.Had a day or two feeling sorry for myself, thought bugger it, lets pack some gear into the back of the cruiser and go to Tassie. So we're booked to sail next Tuesday and plan to head west to Smithton, look around there, head down towards Zeehan and on towards Hobart. Spend a few days round there and then work our way up the East coast. Will be reasonably self sufficient, Bed,fridge, cooking gear,etc... in the canopy on the ute .So  what I am asking is there  anywhere or anything me and the cook should be going out of our way to see ? Everyone I've spoken to so far reckons Tassie is beautiful, and we are looking forward to it. Any suggestions of places to go or things to do would be welcome
Thanks,Luke

Ten days isn't much, I guess south and east (my part of the state) you can't go past Mona. I am not into art and stuff but can spend hours in that place.

Checkout the mountain if you get a clear day, see for miles and miles.

The greenies down here think the forests are the future of tourism so check them out. Not sure where exactly where to go but perhaps you can email one of them for some tips  ;D

Maybe head down to port Arthur and check out the sites, take the power boat tour around Tasman Island it's fantastic.

Up the east coast there are a number of great coastal towns that are great to explore and a great scenic drive up the coast.

Coles Bay and the freycinet peninsula are tops, some great walks to be had to wineglass bay

StHelens, Binalong bay also worth a look too, again some great walks and beaches all up along the east coast.

Not sure how much of that you can fit into the south east part of your 10 days in Tassie but you should get an appreciation of this great isle and help you to plan your next trip.

Enjoy

Lots of great places in Tassie, depends what you are looking for I suppose.  10 days is probably not enough.

Cataract Gorge in Launceston, nice place for a swim and wander around.

Heard good things about the West Coast Wilderness Railway in Queenstown

Cradle mountain in the Midlands is a nice spot.

X2 for MONA.......If you like quirky and slightly dark art galleries, MONA near Hobart is worth a visit......one of the better art galleries I have been to around the world......take your time there.

If you like markets, Hobart has a large craft market on Saturday at Salamanca Place......couple nice pubs down that way too.

Great seafood almost everywhere you go.  We used to buy fresh cooked crayfish at a shack just near Bicheno.

Coles bay national park on the east coast.  Great walk over to Wineglass Bay

Cradle Mt is a top spot on the right day.

If you want to see it you would be bast doing that on the first or last day as its about 100ks 1h1/2 drive fron Devonport where the boat comes in. There is cabin accomodation in the park but booking would be required. P&O run the lodge with cabins & there is also a caravan park.

If you go to Port Arthur, stop at Dunalley on the way. Make sure you get some Fish n Chips there. While they are cooking, head out the back and see the dog and the seal that hang out all day together.

F n C's are so good. From memory its $10 for one person, then add $5 for each extra. They just cook up lots of different things, you don't choose and chips. Best F n C feed I have ever had.

Mona, for sure, we have travelled down to Tassie twice now just to spend a day there and have called past another two times when down there for other things.

The Tahune forest walk is excellent. The town you turn off at to head in there, Geeveston. If you are at there for the night, an unreal Sushi place. Better than Japan, no radio active seafood  ;D

There is a great Whiskey distillery in Hobart.  Do you like trout fishing???

Bruny Island is great, some good camping spots too. Drop into the pub, great feed and the Cheese company.
Prescotts boat trip down into the Southern Ocean is amazing, cannot recommend that enough.

Tassie is awesome, take the back roads. Enjoy :)

Jacob,s Ladder in the Ben Lomond NP is a good one to see, it,s  a multi hair pin road up the side of a mountain with great veiws at the top. Google Jacobs ladder Tasmania and it will give some pictures of it.

They took them down whilst the Red Queen Winter exhibition was on. A lot of new stuff was put into the galleries. I think that exhibition is ending soon, perhaps they'll be back!

Oh yeah, I reckon the drive into the Gordon Dam and Lake Pedder is worthwhile, and the Dam wall is amazing. Warning, dont go if you suffer vertigo!

Have a think where you are going as you may require a National Parks Pass. Also remeber it is Tasmania and can still get quite cold at this time of year (there is snow today on the highlands) and also wet.

Up round the north east is the Pub In The Paddock at Pyengana and then up the road is the St. Columbia Falls (should be flowing quite well with the amount of rain we have had), then making your way the back way to Ringarooma you will go past Ralph Falls. Ledgerwood (up the road from Ringarooma) there is some great carvings made out of the old trees, all done by chainsaw.

Fixed.  I have been to Mount Wellington at Christmas time and been driven back into the car by sleet.

If you end up around Scottsdale, check out Myrtle park camp ground. I cannot recommend it highly enough. $5 a night and about $15 for a drum of fire wood. A beautiful river filled with trout and diurnal Platypus and wonderful hosts. I am not connected with them in any way. I have only stayed there once before and liked it soo much we are heading back in October.

Fixed.  I have been to Mount Wellington at Christmas time and been driven back into the car by sleet.
Me and a mate toured Tasie on push bikes in Jan. '76.  Rode up Mt Wellington on a stinking hot day and there were still pockets of ice about on the top, so obviously not too long since the last cold snap.  When we got back into Hobart the 'Mercury' banners announced:  "HOTEST DAY ON RECORD".

Yep, definitely worthwhile if you like markets.  Probably the largest market in Tasmania, predominantly arts and crafts and some nice food.

I was wondering if anyone can tell me roughly how much it is to take the family, car and camper across to Tassie? We are thinking of going across early next year and did an online quote after seeing the ads for 84 bucks each person plus 84 for the car but the quote came back for $1700 for 2 adults, 2 kids, 1 toddler, the Patrol and the swan. Return... Was thinking I may of stuffed it up so did it again and came up with the same...

Yes apparently our ever so wise government haven't worked out that if you subsidise some of the cost, more people will come and spend more.

As soon as you put a trailer on the "car" the price goes by the total length or the rig  . . . . . . .

If that's what I have to pay, then that's what I have to pay I guess. If they did subsidise the price you might consider a couple of trips in a year if your pushed for time...

Yeah I noticed they are out to sting you. So you take up 2 car spaces and on the quote it was over $600 for the car and camper yet they are advertising 84 dollars for 1 car...

$84 is for a very small car  >:(. Camper trailer/ caravans are cheaper than a normal trailer with a tent and camping gear in it. Go figure  ???
Title: Re: Ten days in Tassie
Post by: bushbandit on September 17, 2013, 12:15:01 PM
While visiting earlier this year there  was lots of talk from travellers how they didn't bring there caravan over as it was to expensive and those who did also shied away from the attractions as they had the cost of fuel and CP prices to deal with.We found the CT the cheapest way as if you tried it by way of staying in cabins ,motels,B&Bs etc the prices were up there. The was a radio program on that I listened to and it was about the Tassie Government being very worried about people not coming over and they were having a pow wow with the Tourism Board and Spirit Of Tasmania I think they said TT Line to come up with a solution.

Just a tip on saving some dollars is to purchase the Entertainment Book Tasmania Version $60 it can be viewed online so you can see the offers which there are a lot.We used it in the 5 weeks and it afforded us to see everything. It goes from June till June and we purchased it on special for $40 delivered in the October previous to our following Feb trip.

We didn't bother to bring our trailer across on the boat when we visited in July. We left it in Melbourne for 10 days at a caravan storage place - cheap as. I was speaking to the guy who runs the storage yard and he pointed out that it in recent years, it is becoming more common for those who live in Tassie to keep their vans in storage in Melbourne. The storage cost for 12 months is still cheaper than bringing the van on the boat.

We love the free camping in Trial Harbour on the West Coast.

We also looked to take the CT over in Jan... very expensive. Last time we went with a tent, was hoping to revisit with our CT, won't be a quick, cheap get away now.

would recommend Strahan and a cruise of the Gordon River do the "captain's upper deck" where they put on all the food and drink you can consume.........

they said that I would never empty the fridge of Bundy cans, I tried hard even filled the backpack with a dozen for "Ron" :cup: but still didn't. Funniest part was as leaving the boat the guys on board gave us some more cans and said just hide them in your bag so the boss doesn't see you leave with them. When they saw the bag they shrugged their shoulders and said take them
