Title: Gal or Powdercoat for coastal living?
Post by: chalkybones on September 04, 2013, 02:26:33 PM
Gidday,

I'm new here. I am considering buying a camper trailer but I need info about the durability of powdercoated or non-galvanised camper trailers. I live about 600 mtrs from the beach and my box trailer has rusted out after about 7-8 years. Admittedly it copped a flogging with motorbikes, rubbish, tools, assorted equipment being loaded and thrashed around in it. So it appears that any scratch to the surface will open it up to rust. No real prob as it was a $700.00 buy and I reckon the $700.00 was used up years ago.

However, some powdercoated CTs seem suitable to my needs and are in the running for deeper consideration alongside the galvanised ones. Can anyone advise me of the durability of powdercoated CTs such as ...will a powdercoated CT rust out even without damaging the surface? Am I definitely better off going for a galvanised CT due to living so close to the beach?

Thanks.

Different finishes for different surfaces. Powder coat is tough and durable and looks good on the camper body, where gal is perfect for the chassis, protection against stone chips etc.

If your living that close to the beach go gal. Powdercoat will just rust from the inside.

I have a hot dipped galv camper trailer and it has been brilliant. You don't have to worry about stone chips or paint work, unless you have to have the pretty paint job.
Galv finishes  can stain a bit with the red centre dirt but its not enough to worry about, steel wool and elbow grease will get it off.

Gal every time. I have my fathers gal box trailer and live about 600m form the beach. It is nearly 30 years old. I have jst repainted rims, hitch and jockey wheel, added LEDs and its just like a bought one. Powdercoat does look good and much better than paint. But... Gal every time!
