Title: Filtering Fuel
Post by: jetcrew on August 12, 2013, 11:32:12 AM
Hi all

Situation- I have 6 gerry cans of fuel , not old fuel. taken from late model cars at wreckers (don,t ask ;D) Now this fuel is taken by punching a hole in the base of the tank and putting in big drum then and   placed in my gerrys.

So I am dubious about the state of the fuel in relation to foreign matter. (the fuel is fine)

What would be the best way to strain / filter this fuel.

I have spare gerry cans so was looking for some sort of filter I could place in top of empty gerry and then pour fuel from one gerry to another.

I googled for such a thing and found nothing, a coffee filter was mentioned along with a stocking ,,but not sure on either of these.

Any advice appreciated.

Jet ;D ;D ;D

Is it diesel or petrol ?
If it's diesel dump it, no filtering will remove possible fungal/bacteria from diesel and it's just not worth the risk of damage to your engines

If its diesel, you'd be mad to use that fuel... the damge that could be done $$$ wise

whilst I agree about not using old diesel in modern engines (common rail) especially , older diesels will run on all sorts of muck. Look at some of the back yard bio fuel getting burnt around the place..

I operated an old dozzer a few years back that had been sitting for 5 or 6 years . put a bit of fresh fuel in the filter housing to get her running , then used the tank full plus 2x 44gal drums that were sitting next to her from the last fuel run ..

So coffee filter would work fine but slow .   If this was going to be an on going thing what about stetting up a filter housing on the shed wall and gravity it ..

cheers

Your vehicles have fuel filters for getting contaminates out in the way of particles, id be more worried about water than solids, is it worth the risk ???

Hi Jetcrew
Whilst all the above advice is good, when we are worried about solid matters in old fuel, we use old stockings across the top of the jerry cans, not much gets through them.  Then again, there aren't many modern cars here, mostly old diesels, and they would run on the smell of an oily rag.

Thanks all for advice I should have been more specific it is UNLEADED... ;D

I think the risk is fine I have filled my boat with  some pretty bad fuel over the years (location) so although my dad just chucks this stuff in his Holden with no issue I like to just take that extra precaution . Fuel doctor will be added to each Jerry in any case but I am more worried about a bit of steel or other solids than  water .

Most people would have a heart attack if they really knew what they were paying $1.50 for

I will try that company in morning thanks for the link KB & woodsie

Has anyone used it ?

I'd get a cheap 12v 'non-EFT' fuel pump (I think '80-'90's  Holden Cameras had external fuel pumps?) and an inline fuel filter (such as this http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Ryco-Fuel-Filter-Z14.aspx?pid=6527#Cross (http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Ryco-Fuel-Filter-Z14.aspx?pid=6527#Cross)) then just pump the fuel out of the jerry cans into your car/boat.

I use the same system to transfer fuel from my sub tank to main tank.

A cotton rag in the top of the funnel that sits in your empty jerry can. Just pour it through that.

Vehicles filter will take care of the rest.

Shane.

update-

MR FUNNEL has been ordered today actually 2 of them .

The price was very good I thought so I grabbed 2 , one for shed and another for the boat when re-fulling on trips. It,s nice when you prepare yourself for a price range and it's way below that.LOL ;D ;D

Thanks again all, once it arrives I will test it out and post results.

If you access to the wreckers for free, grab a 12volt fuel pump, some fuel line and put in a new filter. Hook it all up to 12volts and pump the fuel from one container to another via filter.

You may well be onto a better long term solution there mate :cup: :cup:

Do you mean something like this  ???  I used this to pump and filter fuel from a 44gal drum to the cruiser, worker for a couple of years until it wasn't need any more !

When we lived out west we used to buy our fuel in 44gal drums and used a similar setup to that - so much easier than using a hand pump.

Thanks jk for the pic back there ...I will be making that little pumping set up this w/end. My eldest son has a mowing business and is forever dispensing / spilling fuels even using bloody funels but never see's the level prior to it overflowing all over the place over most of his gear ( not all the time...   i'm going to send him this post just for a stir ) got all that stuff in the garage just sitting there.

Nice work JK - that's a cool setup.

Personally, I just go with Shane's method. I find that the rag gets rid of the bigger bits, and the smaller stuff you just catch in your teeth.

Cheers,
Matt

The mr funnel arrived and has been tested and it does what it says. I poured a glass if water in the funnel and nothing came out the bottom , tipped out then did fuel and it went through then did fuel and water and it let the fuel through but not the water.

Very cleaver , I don't really understand how it works as it has no batteries lol but it does ..

Very simple and cheap bit of kit IMHO and why not as you need a funnel anyway. Will put one in boat and cruiser now as said .

I bought the F1 and it does a jerry in 2 mins the F3 I will try next as it is a little faster.
