I love a nice cold boutiquey style beer once in a blue moon. I can't drink the mass produced rubbish, VB comes to mind. So does anyone have a favourite brew manufactured by a small brewery? Not homemade as I can't buy it unless you have a licence to sell liquor. :police: LOL
Preferably available in Melbourne.

Corona or the XXXX summer.
-
Take a cruise in Belle up to Holgates brewery in Woodend @ Keatings hotel, try a few samplers and take a six pack home, don't mind a pale ale or pilsner. If you need someone to support you in the process of trying them out, pick me up on the way through :)

You can also drop in to MRS Palma's ( its not what your thinking) its a microbrewery all they have on tap is Victorian brews and a heap of them

Fat Yak.
Good drop.
Crap name.
-
I don't mind a beez neez from Matilda bay breweries
-
Don't mind Fat Yak.
Lately been spending a lot of time at my local Mexican restaurant (Carlos Caitina) where they serve Dos Equis Amber which is also nice.
As I type I am sipping some Bintang. Got a taste for that on a recent trip to Bali.
-
Moo Brew pale ale or dark ale.
"Not suitable for Bogans" is imprinted on their plastic beer cups which are much better than the ones you get at the footy.
My brewing aim is to reproduce a reasonable Irish cream ale like Kilkenny. Have got the taste right, still working on head and carbonation issues.
-
i got a real taste for some of the Pale Ales going round ATM
My Favorite without a doubt is :cup: Siera Nevada Pale Ale ...then Little Creatures Pales Ale  and a local one called Angry man pale ale from Murrrays Brewery near Port Stephens
-
Love 'Fat Yak' and have taken to home brewing it.
Give the Vale IPA a go but you must pour what ever you are drinking into a glass to get the real taste.
Recently I was in Tassie and dropped into Squires Bounty (Salamanca) and they had 'Hop Thief' on tap. It was sensational.

Anything German. Made to a strict brewing and ingredients protocol.
Better quality and cheaper than local home brewed cats piss.
Germans do some great non alcoholic beers, You wouldnt know your drinking alkohol frei, except you can 'legally' drive home afterwards.
When I got married, by Dad can sometimes get a bit out of hand and obnoxious when hes had a few..... SHowed him where the free beer was, (alcohol free) and jeez, be the first night he's ever had a bellyfull and behaved himself.
Our wedding went off without the dreaded fear of an embarrasing old man. !!

No not really. The only time I have one is when we go away or after work on a warm day. I will definitely have a few on our travels up north for sure. (Once camp is set up). This is why I am enquiring. I want to take a few stubbies for the drinks fridge.

Yes Wayne, at the camp site, called "Handover" people can drink. The alcohol cannot be openly displayed in the community, or supplied to a community person, that WILL result in immediate removal from country. I know you would not give such to anyone, but I still emphasise such rules.

How ironic
When we got to Balgo there was sign indicating the alcohol rules. One look at the missus and we kept driving, fuel or no fuel. We had on board a couple of stubbies and some port. I was too paranoid to enter the community.
-
Yes, I know about the Balgo rules. However, the police there know there are no bylaws here, we rule ourselves and do not need anything official. If you are not stopping in Balgo, they will allow you to go through. You drive into the community, past the Police Station, on bitumen (in Balgo Community only), take the first turn right that is still bitumen, and then keep drivin straight through. The bitumen lasts about another 200 metres, then back to corrugation, all the way to Mulan.

I like big head. No carb beer from here, also enjoyed a fanny Gertrude's bikkie beer last week
-
James Squire 150 lashes pale ale, or little creatures or Fat yak. Or cascade stout.
-
Corona or the XXXX summer.
X2
Cheers
-
Coopers Sparkling is the "Staple" but Little Creatures Pale for something different every now and then....
-
I like big head. No carb beer from here, also enjoyed a fanny Gertrude's bikkie beer last week
Big Head for me very nice
Just finished off a carton at carona so a carton of big head will be on the shopping list this weekend
-
White Rabbit Dark Ale. The light isn't a bad drop either
-
Two brothers make some great beers. The Taxi is a pilsner that is one of the best beers you could ever drink, IMO!
They do great pizzas too so its an excellent spot for a Friday arvo!
http://www.2brothers.com.au/beer.html (http://www.2brothers.com.au/beer.html)
Strangely enough I enjoy a boutique beer from time to time, but always go back to the staple of VB.
-
Yes I like Bintang and now you can get it locally. i think Aldi was selling it for a reasonable price.
I got mine from Dan Murphy. About average price for an imported beer.
Has anybody tried Chinese beer?
-
Yeah some Chinese beer is ok, tsing Tao is nice very fresh and crisp
-
must say the murrays angry man is a great drop ... In Newcastle we are lucky with the amount of pubs that have craft beers on tap
-
tsing Tao is nice very fresh and crisp
Very partial to a cold Tsing tao, one of the beers you can drink a fair amount of and not have a beer head the next day. Goes well with the number 34 and number 17 takeaway !!!
-
There are some very nice beers coming out of the South Australian wine districts. Vale, Knappstein, Pepperjack are three I can recall.
Also had a drop at the Boags Brewery when in Tassie a few years ago called Wizard Smith. Incredible but have never been able to find it on the mainland.
-
My current favourite is Little Creatures Bright Ale, it's not as bitter as many beers, their Pale Ale is also good
For mass produced product that you might get at a good price then Coopers, Pale Ale or Sparkling Ale are good.
Asian beers, my favourite is Beer Lao but this can be difficult to find, Tsing Tao is definitely worth drinking.
-
Having been lucky enough to have lived in Europe, I say it is near impossible to not put Belgium beers at the very top of the list. With over 140 makes to sample, it is well worth calling in on any trip.
My favorite is this:
http://www.leffe.com/en/beers (http://www.leffe.com/en/beers)
With Brown being the top choice for me, here in Aus, it is hard to get but the Blond and Radieuse are easy to find
For the Aussie beer, It is James Squire or Coopers.
-
Stone and Wood Pacific Ale Yum!
-
People drink Corona as a boutique beer? LOL. Take the fruit out of it and try it - it's almost exactly like Fosters.
XXXX Summer as a boutique beer also gives me a giggle, that's good marketing I guess.
Having said that, I'm not a beer snob, my choice of boutique beer is pretty commercial - Coopers Pale Ale. It's the best beer made in Oz, and still comes in a man size stubbie, not one of those ghey little throwdowns that everything else is served up in.
For proper microbrewery stuff, Scharers Lager, from George IV Inn in Picton NSW. Bavarian recipe and brewed with no added sugars or preservatives. Even the bubbles are natural.
-
I am loving Feral Hop Hog IPA all the way from WA, also Bridge Road Brewers Bling IPA is amazing, if you are a beer nut and are in Sydney give these guys a go www.beercartel.com.au (http://www.beercartel.com.au) i hope this link works (still a newby!)

Hi all
Corona is my daily drink but Little creatures also goes down well.

At the moment any pale ale. Summer I like pulse sets and real lagers
Fat yak
Blue tongue
Little creatures.
James squies
Asian food i like singha tiger Chang etc
Fuji go into dan murphies. Any of the beers that are in shelves loose or 6 packs are the way to go
If they are stacked on pallets bypass them.
Or try Nillumbik cellars in Diamond Creek. They have a good range as well.
-
My favourite at the moment is St Peters Ruby Red Ale (Suffolk UK) and available at Dan Murphys for $7.95 a bottle (500ml)
Also partial to a drop of Little Creatures and was surprised to see it's now sold in Pint bottles at a restaurant this arvo!
Polished a couple off and according to my Android app "Alcodroid" I will be sober at 6:30pm (thats now!) oh hang on I've just added a glass of red so my new sober time is 20:57 ;D

This time of the year for me it's killkenny or caffery's season
-
Blue Sky Brewery in Cairns do "Reef Blonde", a Passionfruit flavoured beer I enjoyed!
-
Being new to this forum and most of what is talked about here this is a topic I can comment on with ease.
Most of the beer I drink is my own but I regularly enjoy everything which is on offer here at our local at the Wig n Pen. Unfortunately it's not in bottles but when any of you visit by Canberra name sure you visit - then message me and stop by my bar...
Back to nice craft beers and I'm really enjoying Coopers, Thomas Coopers Selection Celebration Ale.
Another nice drop is Young's Double Chocolate Stout, very nice.
-
stop by my bar...
You own your own bar?
WELCOME to myswag. You've just made a lot more instant friends no doubt.......... I'm sure theres some myswaggers that would come visit.
Join in and enjoy the forum.

You own your own bar?
Perhaps I should have worded that better. My own home bar. :)
Five kegs on tap and always ready to share, if this past time is anything like my others then I'm always willing to meet others and have them share my beers over a chat!
-
My own home bar.
Good enough. It'll do.
At least theres no till register in that bar !!!!
Ha ha. Shame I'm justa bit far away to drop in for a chat.
-
Yep ya got to love having beer on tap at home ..... or camping with kegs in your camper trailer
-
Hi Hoytshooter, just noticed your keg setup on the camper, looks great.

Love the Wig n Pen. A mate of mine was a brewer there for a while.

Good choice he's a mate of mine

A hint I picked up tonight to chill down warm beer or wine bottles quickly was to wrap them in a wet towel or dish cloth and then put them in the freezer, worked fine for me.

I have just knocked to top off 2 Sail & Anchor Cat's Shank Kolsch not a bad drop for $9 a 4 pack might have to go and get another one from the fridge.
-
Coopers red and pale ale are both good
I like squires
Fat Yak is ok........not a huge fan
Blue tongue is ok
My first choice is one of the extra dry variety either carlton or tooheys by choice
-
I have just knocked to top off 2 Sail & Anchor Cat's Shank Kolsch not a bad drop for $9 a 4 pack might have to go and get another one from the fridge.
The local had Sail and Anchor Dry Dock at $39 a carton so I grabbed one this arvo, not a bad drop.
I remember going to the sail and anchor pub/micro brewery in Freemantle many years ago and trying a few (a lot) of their brews, the chilli beer pulled me up though!
-
Only just found this thread. I'm partial to british style amber ales and I really like Mountain Goat Hightail Ale.
But then, I'm partial to any beer that isn't "megaswill". I love Blue Sky Brewery's Pilsner for an esy session beer (and it's pretty cheap for a craftbeer), Signha with Asian, Youngs double choc stout, most of the Aussie up and coming draft brewers etc.
My brewing aim is to reproduce a reasonable Irish cream ale like Kilkenny. Have got the taste right, still working on head and carbonation issues.
Mace, do you brew all grain or extract beers and do you bottle or keg?
For head, try adding up to 500g of wheat malt to an all grain grist or about 250g of wheat malt extract to a kit or extract beer.
For carbonation, with bottles you probably won't get quite as close to the real thing but you can "cheat" with a "pocket sparkler". A guy on aussiehomebrewer.com uses a 10mL syringe, sucks up some of the beer and shoots it back into the glass to make a big thick head.
With kegs, use a carbon dioxide and nitrogen blend and viola!
Cheers!
Jono.

Its good living 10mins away from Mclaren vale 8) Yes Vale ale is good, there is also http://swellbeer.com.au/ (http://swellbeer.com.au/) which ain't bad and are all 500ml bottles.
http://www.goodiesonbrewery.com.au/ (http://www.goodiesonbrewery.com.au/) I'm rather partial to their Pale ale, and they usually have a stall at the farmers market at Willunga on a saturday morning which is handy when grabbing your vegatables Hehe.

Yep this is my fallback for quick chilling if the co2 fire extinguisher isn't handy. Actually went camping with no ice but just big co2 extinguisher for beer, and just ate fresh fish and crabs
Was in Sydney for work the other week and found a pub which had free house beer before 7. Ws quite nice beer as well

This morning I was in luck and was able to buy two cartons of Victoria Bitter beer cheap at the local supermarket.
I placed the boxes on the front seat and headed back home. I stopped at a service station for fuel where a drop-dead gorgeous blonde in a short skirt was filling up her car at the next pump.
She glanced at the two boxes of ammo, bent over and leaned in my passenger window, and said in a sexy voice:
"I'm a big believer in barter, old fella. Would you be interested in trading sex for beer?"
I thought for a few seconds and asked:
"What kind of beer 'ya got?"
-
ln the back streets of Abbotsford Melb there is a small boutigue producer that kocks out a fine brew for the refined consumer
Victorian Bitter in stubbies & can for both kinds of drinkers  Matter of fact l will get 1 now :cup:

I'll try any boutique beer. But living in a small town, the choices are limited, well none actually.
So for me, anything with "Coopers" in front of it. Nothing else. Except Light. Nothing better than Camping in winter with a Coopers Stout. Leave it out overnight and cold for the next day.
This "Young's Double Chocolate Stout" has me intrigued. Maybe a drop over Christmas on my travels to Melbourne might be in order. Guaranteed it'll be cold for a few hours during the day at some stage.

Hi all
Have just spent a few nights testing the new camper at 1770/Agnes Water with an very good mate. To celebrate the new camper and the reunion, I purchased a carton of Sail and Anchor Brewery's Devil Dodger from Dan's. A 640ml longneck of 5.9% alcoholic goodness. Cloudy like a Coopers, very fruity...delicious. We started being civilized with glasses, but realised that just because the stubby cooler didn't fit, didn't mean you couldn't drink from the bottle!
Thoroughly recommended
-
I knocked back a few pumpkin ales the other night, quite an interesting taste and almost covers all the food groups
-
Hawthorn, local Melbourne brewing beer.
http://hawthornbrewing.com.au/
-
tried a few 6packs of a brew called Minimum Chips by matilda bay
it was pretty good, got the 6pac on special for $10, usually 20 apparently
-
fat yak or any of the beers from the sail & anchor brewery,
-
Yeah fat yak is good
-
Knocked back a couple long necks of the Sail n Anchor limited release Jacks Tar on my way to Tassie a few months back - knocked me for a six with the alcohol content somewhere near 9%!
On another brew, we have a great new micro brewery here in Renmark - Woolshed Brewery pumping out a great coffee stout and probably my favorite is their dark ale - Judas Dark using a local wattleseed extract for a unique flavor - sorry these aren't available in Melb, but a damn good excuse for a drive!

It has to be Knappstein reserve larger. :cup:
Doesn't come cheap at $15.90 for 4 pack. Dan Murf...
What you get is a beer that takes your taste buds on a journey from sip, swirl to swallow.
Highly recommended.
Would like hear if any else has tried it?
-
Love the Knappstein, so unlike a lager, the Stone & Wood Pacific ale is amazing too.
-
Bloody hawthorn hey.. as long as u do get to help quality control that slab
Will apply due effort to the job Burga ;D
