Title: extended travelling and bills
Post by: 87Bravo on August 04, 2013, 10:08:54 PM
Gday guys, the wife and I are planning an 8 week trip to the tip next year and the planning is going well. But the thing that puzzles me is the paying of utility bills that arrive at home while we are away! How does everyone else do this because Id hate to come home to a defrosted freezer and dead fish in the aquarium due to the power being cut off!

Switch to direct debit before you go. Takes the hassle out of it.

Our son pays them for us, and we fix him up when we get back.

Do you have anybody local that you trust enough to pay them while you're away?
You could work out what bills will need to be covered, and give them some cash in advance.

Some providers have a " manage your account" section on their website which allows account balance retrieval and payments.

Most of our bills (certainly utilities such as electricity, gas and phones) are emailed to me - no more paper bills. When we went to the tip last way we were away 8 weeks and paid everything as required over the internet, using iPhone/iPad. We had internet access at Barmaga, and most places along the coast south of Cairns.

Direct debit is your friend. All my bills are on direct debit, either from a bank account or credit card, and then the credit card is also on DDebit.
House, camper, contents insurance, Medibank private ditto. Even my newspaper accounts. Rates and water, electricity and gas.
Obviously, you have to ensure that you've got the cash/credit in the account to be debited, but after that it's a no-brainer.

Cheers, Tony

We have a neighbour collect our mail [and feed the fish!!], they email us with the details & we pay the accounts when we have internet access.
