I think its bad form when someone whats to share how excited and happy they are about getting a new CT purchase and they get ripped off having that "good happy feeling" with negative comments from people about my mates mates uncle had a imported trailer blah blah blah and they are crap. Generally start knocking their new CT purchase without even laying eyes on it.
I do object to CT Companies who pretend they sell an OZ made Trailer when half the components and canvas comes from overseas.
Who cares if the trailer is made here or made or overseas. People rant and rant and about how forum members should buy Oz made and go on and on and on about it. There is a word for it and it is called "hypocrite" They say this while driving their imported vehicle with their house full of imported furniture and imported electricals.
Regardless of how you feel about imported CT's; don't bag out someone for buying one.
The point is, Mums and Dads are sharing quality outdoors time and priceless special memories with their kids, close family and friends. That is the whole point of this forum isn't it??? At least I thought it was.
Overall I think it is un-MySwagman like behaviour; and IMO it should stop. Anyone else?

Hear what your saying Muzza. Unfortunately it happens all too often, and in my experience, if you've read any threads I've contributed to, it is exactly as you say, by someone who owns an Aussie made camper who can't help but make you feel you've sold this countries kids employment opportunities as well.
It's called big dick syndrome. For those of you who don't know what big dick syndrome is, I'll explain. It's when someone thinks their dick is more impressive than yours and can't help themself and they feel obligated to let you know that they think their dick is bigger and better than yours.
-
Most people only criticise to justify their own decisions in life. In this case it confronts them with 'was it really worth the extra I spent?'. Then they hope that everyone else will chime in with some comfort about how the cheap one will fall apart blah blah blah... Then off they go happy with themself for another day.
Plenty of people like that in life.

Who care whether you have a swag, 3 second pop up tent, $50k camper, Landcruiser, Nissan or whatever as long as you are out there enjoying it, that's the main thing isn't it.

Muzza, I am genuinely sorry if you have, or even if you just feel you have, been bagged for buying an imported camper. I know you have always been upfront about what you're buying and had a clear understanding of what you might have had to do to the camper to bring it up to a standard that you would be happy with.
I have certainly commented in threads where folks have inquired about some of the Chinese manufactured campers, only ever to protect the hard earned of those folks. As a representative of what I consider to be one of the better built camper brands I regularly meet prospective camper owners who have no clue at all about the differences between various brands and builds, and likely don't have the skill, time or resources to be able to make improvements where necessary.
However, no one should be ridiculed or made to feel bad about their camper on MySwag. We have always tried to be inclusive. Budgets are a real thing and not everyone can afford whichever camper they might desire or aspire to, so whatever gets you out there has been something of a mantra.
Happy to take to task those who are overly critical.

Not you mate. You are always the Gentleman and your comments are positive and constructive.
I have also commented on threads to clarify to people that think they are buying an OZ made CT that is in fact imported and they will need to carefully check things over their CT, that it will most likely be modified, fixed etc.
I agree with your comments mate, all good.

Link to thread in question?
It is also worthwhile reporting the offending posts, that way the mod team is alerted to the issue and can deal with it.

I agree, I bought an Australian made camper, neighbour bought an imported one, both of us went camping and they both worked the same... We all had a great time! Everyone has a budget and everybody has the right to make their own choice and be respected for it.
The price proposition of some of these products is compelling. My other car is an XR6 Turbo and I needed some new tyres. I do 130 Km's per day at a minimum and could pay $400 for brand name or $175 for some imported ones. I have driven 5 thousand Km's on them and can say other than some minor reduced wet weather grip they perform the same. To get back on topic, forums slam some of these decisions and they have never actually tried them but hide behind broad based assumptions. If I was to believe the threads I would be dead by now...
I have enjoyed your posts and the modifications to improve areas on your trailer. I suspect you will be a long way ahead and never have any regrets. That is providing you stop working on it and take it camping ;)

We had a $3000 import and had a great time in it, we also had a great time in our $30,000 Goldstream so I'm not about to knock anyone, however it does make me wonder what's in it for those who seek to destroy other peoples enjoyment.

Hi muzza01,
I would have to agree with you about the anti import ( Chinese ) camp trailer comments , but it is not just import trailers that cop a flogging from some on this forum . HID lights, Diff Lockers, 4x4 Electric Winches , BBQ's and the list goes on. 30 years ago it was anti JAP made - bloody jap crap , 15 years ago it was anti KOREA made , now it appears to be anti CHINA made.
cheers duggie

& the way we are going it soon won't be Aussie Made :'( :'( :'( :'(

G'day Muzza,
Don't let ém get to ya, there's plenty of keyboard hero's around these days...... all part of modern day society. I'm sure your new camper will bring you and your mob plenty of big smiles...... focus on that and forget about the knockers.......
Bloody 'ell, my camping (prior to the camper trailer) was all done in a 15 yr old tent bought from k-mart for half price, and all my camping gear Mrs and 4 kids were lugged around in an '84 petrol hilux, with no a/c :cup:...... oh heaven forbid!!!!
Pretty sure, if i had good times doing that with my mob in that set up, you'll have a ripper plus time doing what you're doing in your new camper!
Happy travels mate!

I've my share of 'i've gotta goldstream/coromal big dick syndrome' imparted my way, as i have one of those 'Shitbox' jaycos that are supposed to fall apart. Funny thing is, they are aus built with alco running gear! Maybe i should sell it and get back what i paid for it...? No chance, I'm using it as i type...

And generators and eBay solar panels and independent suspension lol The amount of 'facts' i read on here from arm chair mechanical engineers is laughable ;D

Oh and for the record the only time I take offence in the Import debate is when a supplier pipes up on here and tries to deceive people by saying their trailers are made in Australia when they are imported. I use imported products on a daily basis and have no issue with them....besides the fact that the money has gone to another country I suppose but thats how life is sadly.

I have gone from a POS Chinese trailer to a box trailer and an ebay tent I have had for about 10 years........................don't sweat it.

Generally the self appointed experts get confused and think their personal opinion on something is 'fact'.
Who cares if you don't win an internet pi55ing contest or your mate has something better (or perceived to be better), your the one paying for it and using it.
At the end only one person ever has to be happy with something like a camper purchase... The wife!

Actually none of the negative comments have been directed at me or my CT thread.
I have read these comments from on others swaggers threads where they are contemplating buying an imported trailer and get negative comments.
Other threads have been when someone has been really excited and happy and just wanted to brag or share being excited about their new CT purchase with other Swaggers only to have negative comments posted. I don't understand how someone would want to rob another Swagger of that (feel good and excited feeling) by posting negatives about their CT. Robbing a Swagger of that feeling is just not nice.

I agree with you 100% Danny. It peeves me when I see something is advertised as Oz made when it clearly is not. I also hate the "manufactured in Australia comment" which is misleading. Importing a trailer and then bolting it together does not equal manufactured in OZ IMO.
-
it is not just the imported threads... i have stopped making as many comments as I did because I was personally attacked for having an opinion by a member... lets not go down the path of some other forums and the moderators do a great job......cant even remember what it was about, i have moved on in life.... their problem not mine...

these are 2 different situations and depending on which one it is depends if i agree or not. if someone is asking for an opinion on a product they are looking at buying, then be prepared for people to bag it because it's likely to happen as everyone is entitled to their opinion of a product (you just need to work out if it's an informed opinion is all), but if it's a thread about a purchase they have made and they are bragging or showing it off so to say, it'd be pretty rude for someone to jump into that thread and start bagging said product IMHO.
-
Good luck with the ezy trail. I bought a top of the line model and it was the biggest bucket of sh!t hope you have better luck than me. I did get an electric shock while connecting the power
Do you mean comments like these? The inference is obvious for all who read it. You're taking a risk if you buy an Ezytrail.
Bollocks.
It slid off the shoulders pretty easy the first time, it gets harder to ignore the more you read similar comments in other peoples threads who are sharing their excitement and they receive similar comments.
I generally ignore these comments in other threads that don't affect me directly, but it is hard to ignore when they are targeted directly at you in a thread where you are sharing your ideas about your pride and joy.
Anonymity certainly brings out the worse in people sometimes.
If you look at the poll on who owns what type of camper, you'll note that there are good numbers of people who own imports, yet so many of them don't post build threads of the mods they do, possibly because they don't want the negative comments aimed in their direction.
I have been PMing a new member since before April who recently purchased an EzyTrail, pumping me for information, and I don't have to think hard about why he hasn't made any posts about his camper, but I hope he does so others can share his experience with his EzyTrail, good or bad.

Exactly , this type of thing is a blight on an otherwise terrific forum . It becomes very tiresome to read the same vitriol over and over . Dont know that there is much that can be done tho other than to appeal to peoples sense of right and wrong .
-
Who gives a toss what sort of camper you have, as long as ur out there enjoying it with ur family, and ur getting your monies worth, just get on and enjoy it.
Whilst everyone is entitled to there opinion, its not always best to be aired for all to hear, that's not saying you cant have it, but perhaps best kept to yourself. ;)
At the end of the day, if someone has something to say about what you have spent ur hard earned on, and you don't like it, tell them to piss off, and if they don't like that, then they should harden up. ;D
Regardless of what ever camper you have, or were it was made, I hope ur having a good time using it.
Regards Swanny

There is a difference between offering people advice (even negative) on any purchase and when someone actually buys something.
You can offer all the negative you can BEFORE the purchase, but after the purchase has been made, all you can do is offer support and help them enjoy whatever it was they purchased...
My name is Mark, I drive a Toyota and tow a Jayco... :)
-
but after the purchase has been made, all you can do is offer support and help them enjoy whatever it was they purchased...
and if your not capable of that, try biting your tongue and not posting at all. Unfortuantly some just can't do that.
-
And generators and eBay solar panels and independent suspension lol The amount of 'facts' i read on here from arm chair mechanical engineers is laughable ;D
You're right DannyG, but it's also kind-of sad when people can't see the basic difference between engineering fact and information about a product, and someone's opinion.
A quick example:
"Galvanising looks crap" ... is an opinion. Some people like it - some don’t.
"Galvanising is more durable than paint because it’s a metal-on-metal bond" ... is a fact.
Some people get upset with comments such as this, especially if it's not something they want to hear.
But better to hear/read/research before buying something; always remember the seven Ps:
Proper Prior Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance
edit: well said MD Simpson, do the homework first.
-
I don't think it's an issue when people ask for opinions and get them.
But when someone is posting to share their joy at the new camper purchase, it's a pretty mean thing to be critical of their choice. I think we all agree on that.
On the other hand, advice like "hey mate, watch out for the XYZ it's a common issue with those" is useful information intended to help. I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from making such a post, tactfully worded.
It's too common when asking about cheaper imported products on forums such as these to get a stack of replies along the lines of "if you buy cheap you get what you pay for". I'd be happy with this advice coming from someone who actually has first hand experience of the product in question, but mostly it's just someone justifying their own choice in paying big $$$ for the premium brand.
-
The only form of stereotypical behavior pertaining to swagmen that comes to mind is to camp by a billabong, under the shade of a tree named after a box of wine, expressing themselves in song whilst watching and waiting for a billy to boil.
The problem of poor judgement seems arise when the hypnotic melody of said dulcet tones attracts sheep that like to sleep in tucker bags. This in turn attracts trigger happy troopers, resulting in untimely endings to the singing careers of many a fine voiced swagger.
-
Agree muzza. In my line of work we need to have broad shoulders. As said above there are plenty of keyboard warriors on here, some have even commented on this thread. The best thing to do is smile, and enjoy your camper. The money you save will pay for years and years of holidays :-)
-
I don't like XXXX Beer wont touch the stuff has to be the worst brew on the planet
-
I have no issue with what brand of CT people buy. We all spend our hard earned money on what we can afford and what we feel is worth the money. My only concern is that whatever is sharing the road with my family and I is safe. It seems to me that most safety conscientious people on here know what kind of CT they've bought and whether it needs any modifications to ensure its safety. But we can't all be CT experts.

Overall it really depends on the situation.
If you ask over in mechanical 'should I buy X' then you should expect, and cop on the chin, whatever is said. a good example is Huntsman products. Ask the question in mechanical and you will have Danny making love to it and me sticking my fingers down my throat ;D . That is opinion based upon experience.
If you are posting about your own trailer then respect is the order of the day. I have chinese suspension on mine and I am happy for anyone to point and laugh cause I got what was coming, being a tight wad and all 8)
Just my 15 Trillion Yuan. :D

That not inflammatory, it gospel truth. But heres ya problem, the popularity of xxxx gold is one of life's true mysteries. The abominable drop is reaching plague proportions on the girt by sea's east coast. Rather perplexing really, a nail in the coffin of fine taste and a good example as any of de evolution in full swig ... sorry swing.
-
AH well, I'm open to criticism as my CT is an Oz built no namer with several bits I'm sure are from overseas, has a Chinese water pump, foreign tyres & batteries but does have an Oz built DO35, so I'm open for criticism from any righteous pillocks who are more than welcome to keyboard their rocks off!!!!

-
I don't really care what people think of my GIC Extreme Offroad trailer!
I have done a few mods and I knew I would have to to get it to where I wanted to!!
My misso said the other day 'even if we had bought a camper with everything on it that we wanted, you would still be out here in the man cave fixing something on it!!'
To me, if I'm camping with the Strvy Clan, I enjoy looking at other peoples CT's and getting ideas!
-
a good example is Huntsman products. Ask the question in mechanical and you will have Danny making love to it and me sticking my fingers down my throat ;D
Lol not entirely true. SOME of the gear huntsman sell is fine, eg I purchased some nolathane style bushes, can bolts, some brackets, ironman shocks and springs, plastic water tanks and a few other items and most of them have been great but some of the items I bought have been rubbish but I suspected as such due to the price and therefore didn't expect a lot.
I make love to them as you put it because quite often people generalize and just say "huntsman products are rubbish" which IMHO is not fair. I'd prefer mr sexy man to say "some of what huntsman sell can be rubbish" ;)
You have obviously bought some rubbish from them and I respect that, as have I. But I have also bought good items through them.

I agree with what 95% of you are saying, It doesnt matter what you have, where it came from, how heavy it is or how long it takes to put up. If your happy who cares what people say.all you haters should keep quite.
Congratulate someone if they are excited about buying something..... If you dont like what they purchased dont say anything. Hit back and read another post.

It's called big dick syndrome. For those of you who don't know what big dick syndrome is, I'll explain. It's when someone thinks their dick is more impressive than yours and can't help themself and they feel obligated to let you know that they think their dick is bigger and better than yours.
Glad we cleared that up early in the piece...
but seriously my opinion
In a perfect world we can all buy what we like and support all the things we love but for now just getting close to what you dream of is the best some of use will ever get considering some of the jobs most are too high and mighty to do for a crust. My highest respects to the underpaid sh!t kickers who performs his/her work with the highest of skill given the work environment they are provided, just to scrape together enough coin to support their own family.
I find myself guilty of flying the "buy aussie made/owned" banner.
Wish I could afford all the glory that comes with building a young, growing Australia. After all, we are just a baby in the scheme of things and in reality, I buy power from Foreign owned energy suppliers, drink water from the alps, eat food from all over the world, watch TVs built overseas and on and on and on. Really we have already given our choices away so I just get what I can afford until it becomes unaffordable.
I wish not to offend but in such a diverse country there aint much hope in pleasing everyone.
Happy trails from a hypocrite.

Muzza, I agree 100%. I actually spent a bit of time thinking about this at work yesterday (probably about the same thread you refer too) and I'm disappointed that an excited new member with health problems would be treated in such a way. No one welcomed him and some hit the ground running about their opinions about Chinese campers. The topics of Chinese imported campers and politics bring out the worst in some members and unfortunately it affects the way I feel about Myswag on the whole. Please understand that I know that the majority of members are good helpful people and that this is overall a friendly and tight community, but a few thoughtless people who think their opinions are so important that it's ok to offend others have a negative affect on what is otherwise a great forum.

Are we really reading more into this than there really is? MySwag, like any forum is only a reflection of society and IMO society has become a little precious. Yes, there will be a..eholes who think they are better or think they know everything but this is everywhere in life, not just isolated to here. So, having said this, it is up to you members(not just the mods) to step in a adjust the attitude of the few or report the post that you feel is inappropriate with an explanation why and then us mods can address accordingly. As I said, I think we are becoming a little over sensitive to anyone who may have an opinion when it's not in tune with our own. Remember, we are all entitled to our own opinion but we must respect the opinion of others no matter how much it differs from our own. Mutual respect no matter the differing views. Life would be boring if we where all the same......:-)

I don't think you can call 77 responses in a little over 2 days which are generally agreeing with the sentiment of the original post 'a little precious', I would call it a 'general concensus'.

Don't mean the comments here. I mean when people are making comments about others stuff and taking offence. You say consensus, what about all those that possibly disagree but thought, I won't post as I will get howled down(it's possible). I don't disagree with the sentiments in this thread by any means but everyone is entitle to there opinion, even if it isn't the consensus as you put it.
People who bitch have the loudest voice but are not the consensus. Greenies are a fine example.....:-)

After the fantastic trip we had at the Gulf and spending $11,000 for a recon motor 3 weeks before the trip plus $550 on tyres on the trip all I can say is get out there and enjoy what ever you have. Who cares what people say. Most of the time they have never been camping.
No one has opinions on your memories of a great trip. That is priceless.

Been resisting commenting on this topic but some people just don't get it, do they.
Just posted about my new DMax ute and get this as a reply:
"The hilux eats them all every day.. Ok $10k more but over the time u will spend that on more repairs etc.."
Says more about them than it does your choice of vehicle.

Says more about the lack of reading i did..

They are not the same vehicle now the Colorado no longer runs the Isuzu motor.

Really, I know the previous models were same same, but I thought the new ones were like the Ranger/BT50 too. Just different motor, or completly different beasts?
-
We're straying way off topic but to answer your questions, except for the chassis I don't think the current model Colorado and the current model DMax share much else. The Colorado has the Fiat 2.8l diesel whilst the DMax has a 3l Isuzu motor. They have different gearboxes. The European Dmax has a twin turbo 2.5l motor just for something different again. I believe GM and Isuzu will again collaborate on the next model.

I reckon we should all chip in and get a 1990's 3L hilux and share it around. Take that for a drive and ANYTHING we buy today will be a rolls!
Like the new range of dual cabs. Finally getting to be decent size inside.

 no hard feelings on my part friend because we actually have a lot in common with regard to ethics>> so all the best with your massive project, the practical mod upgrade improvements you share are excellent for the less experienced. Aussie Kev :cup:

Not you mate. You are always the Gentleman and your comments are positive and constructive.
I have also commented on threads to clarify to people that think they are buying an OZ made CT that is in fact imported and they will need to carefully check things over their CT, that it will most likely be modified, fixed etc.
I agree with your comments mate, all good.
