Title: Build time for a new Australian-made CT's
Post by: Goose on June 24, 2013, 10:16:10 AM
Hi

What is the typical build time for a new camper trailer being built in Australia?

I have been waiting 2 months now for a stock standard CT to be built. I understand the build hasn't really started as it's being held up by "welding".

Is this a normal lead time for building at CT?

I can appreciate complex builds with unique materials or shapes taking longer than simple builds, but mine is completely standard and it's just steel construction.

Goose.

My Tambo was 4 months from order to delivery, depends on size of operation. I was given a delivery date at the time of order and it was met. Pity they closed down, great campers and people to deal with

I guess it depends on how busy the company is that is building it. But a week or so should see a basic trailer built once its started.

I can only gather from your post that they didn't tell you there would be a back log?

Our Aussie Jays was about 10 weeks but they said it actually takes less than 2 weeks to make the trailer. However they only turn out 2 a week so obviously they have a wait list

So i was given a date of the 11th of June for it be built and out of the factory, having placed the order 24th of April. No indication of backlogs etc.

But from the dialog so far, it sounds like they not only have a backlog of orders but some availability issues with their welders.

Whats bugging me is all these delays are in spite the salesmen having originally made a real fuss about me placing the order during the Rosehill show. That is, i had to place the order during the show or never ever expect to again get the price on offer, which i know now is really just the standard RRP anyway. So they emphasis the importance of me placing the order quickly, but then they take forever to build it.

Reassuring to hear others have had similar build times though.

Do you think i should be asking for some compensation for the delays? Lets say the final delay will be about 20 - 25 days. What would be reasonable on an 18K camper?

Our first camper took about 15 weeks from order to pick up. Of that, the actual build time is approx 4 weeks from "bits 'n pieces" to the final product. Our current camper took 22 weeks from ordering until delivery. Actual build time is similar - approx 4 weeks from "bits 'n pieces" to the final product.

You can only ask but I doubt they will compensate. Waiting an extra month is a bit much imho, a week you could handle and almost expect, even a fortnight, but a month or more is poor form.

Keep us informed, it would be nice that they offer something in the way of compensation.

We waited 5 months for ours, but it was actually ready a month early, but we deferred pick up time.  I put it down to quality ... it takes time.

When I ordered mine I was told 8-10 weeks, but they did say there was slim chance it could be sooner depending on a how a couple of big orders are progressing.

For once things went my way and they managed to fit my job around the big orders and I had it after 4 weeks.

Some offroad caravans are 18 months...
I agree with Danny, they will laugh at you for compensation..

Is this a larger company?? Just sounds like that company in Qld that went toes up taking peoples money...

Sorry but I'd ask for a date or go elsewhere.. plenty of good used trailers on here for example.

We ordered our Odyssey on Australia Day (2007) and picked it up in June.  I understand the waiting list for AORC campers went out to around 7 months before they put in a second assembly line to bring it back to 3-4 months.

I think I'll just sit tight in that case. My wait time seems pretty normal compared to what others have had  So all good, thanks folks!

We were giving a date for delivery and it was met. 2 months from order to hand over. But others have waited over 6 months for their trailer. Depends how many orders they have. Having said that, if you have being giving a date and it still not ready i would be asking questions also
