Title: Sealing the Tanami
Post by: Tjupurula on May 30, 2013, 05:13:00 PM
Hi Swaggers
Yesterday here in Mulan there was a big community meeting, the same has happened in Balgo and Billiluna.  The Government is now considering sealing the Tanami Track.
The track is 1077km in length, with an unsealed length of 753 km.  They have estimated the total cost of sealing the Tanami at $564,750,000.
It cannot be done until an application goes through to have the Tanami classified as a State Road, as at the moment the Tanami is classified as a track, not a road.
The communities have a high percentae of votes in favour of this action, so I trhought I would let fellow Swaggers know,
Regards

I would guess that money could be spent in many more beneficial ways other than road works

There was a report on ABC Radio National yesterday morning, which included an interview with the Mayor.
I thought he put the case of the benefits for the locals very well.

One of the points that was made in the interview was that locals need to run 4bys because of the state of the road, but that if it was sealed they could run regular sedans / wagons.

Perhaps they could "take the Golf" instead....... :)

Lots of $$$$$$$$ and realistaically not many people benefit from it.....

Actually the truth is that a lot of the "locals" already use regular cars, you only need have a look at the rubbish tips in most communities around here to see the evidence of that.  One of the problems with regular vehicles is very few run on diesel, and the onlyform of petrol we have out here is opal, and that does wonders for damaging newer engines.
They are talking about sealing the Tanami, not the access roads that come into the communities, we are over 80 km's from the Tanami, and some of that road makes the Tanami look like it is already sealed.

If I wanted to camp with 23908230498230498 people, i'd go to the park royal in town.

It's been on the cards for quite some time. They now consider it the best option as a gateway to export either to Broome or Derby. There is now a government commitment to expand Broome Port.

It's the Tanami Road now and has been fore a long time. It is used to transport from Alice to the Desert. The new Clinics came up that way which due to the rain, delayed Billiluna. I don't thing it's a big deal these days, there are better tracks to travel IMO

Personally I like the idea, same for Cape Leveque. Good to get the people up here.

Yjw Government people from Main Roads must have had their facts wrong then the other day, as they stated that until it is offcially approved, it is still a track, but mistakes can be made.

Hi Wayne
That is not going to happen,  Napanangka is a TO for the CSR and they will simply never allow it to be sealed.  There are simply too many areas they do not want people near, and keaving it as is will avoid excessive people getting in.  After what happened at the Carnarvon Caves I do not blame them.

I have spoken with Napanangka, and at some stage we will be making you a real boomerang, not one of those small toys that they sell in shops and tourist joints........just a bit of a thankyou for her sewing stuff.  She has made some good skirts for herself already.
