Gday just looking into upgrading the car before the new camper arrives and the mrs isnt to keen about driving a cruiser or patrol around on a day to day basis as she reckons it would be too big for her?? So we have been looking at prados , any advice or pros and cons from prado owners would be much appreciated
-
Check that the back door will open with your camper attached before you hand over your $$$. Great vehicles BUT the back door can be a PITA.

We have had the draw bar extended by 300mm ,would this help? Whats the dramas with the doors?
-
Try an FJ, same chassis

Maybe but you would want to confirm it clears your hitch (it should, although Pajeros can have problems here because of the spare wheel location) and your stone guard etc. it is usually the stone guard on the draw bar that will bring you unstuck. Ask the CT owner/manufacturer if they are aware of the compatibility with a Prado.
It was a deal breaker for us this time round (I have had two new 120 TD's and loved them).

We have a trig hitch on the jayco and as there is no handle on top the back door clears the hitch no worries.
Btw, we are selling our 120 prado in July/Aug!

I don't have a problem with the boat or the box trailer with regards to the back door clearing and both only have standard hitches on a flipped over tongue mount so most decent ct receivers shouldn't be a problem. Not sure whether 300mm will get the door fully open but it should open far enough.
I am just about to order my 4th so I don't really need to say much more about them than that.

We have had a 100series and a 120 Prado. Prado is far more car like and my wife way prefers to drive it than the cruiser. The good thing about the Prado is the running costs of the petrol and diesel are very similar in the long run so the choice is easier.
Dont discount Pajero - much cheaper and just as capable.
We have the earlier non common rail Prado (non D4D) and it returns around 12.5 everywhere with slightly taller tyres. The D4D should see 10's to 11's. The petrols around the 14's.
Highly recommended.

I love the FJ but for everyday dropping kids off, maybe not as user friendly as the Prado.

Thanks everyone great advise, were looking at something around 2007 /2009
Hopefully can find something nice in the next couple of weeks

I've had a petrol 90 series sold that and bought petrol 120 sold that and bought TD 150 last year. Did no mods to the first 2 and both cars did well even on some moderate 4wd tracks. Have done heaps to the 150 as I plan on keeping it for a long time.
Re the back door- mine opens most of the way with the ct hitched on. If I really want it open all the way, say to use the table I have in the back door, I just swing a bit to left upon parking. Can then open the rear door all the way.
If you're buying a second hand 120 just do your research on the diesel injector issues and ensure you buy a car that has been properly serviced.
-
Rkwpjv what exactly is your prado km,s rough price etc
-
Cheers i think the fj is a bit out of my price range
-
Our 120 series petrol Prado serves as a soccer mums car 49 weeks of the year. Just a commodore wagon on a 4WD chassis really in terms of size. We came out of a VX station wagon and it is not much different.
-
Take her for a drive in a VX or Sahara 200 Series. They have electric height adjustable front seat, and get her to go for a drive. She might well be pleasantly surprised.

Shame your in Perth.......I am about to trade my 2009 150 series with 90K on the clock. You could of had it for trade price.
Its never been on the beach.......I promise...................... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Fly over and pick it up. Check the bumper for minor trailer contact ;)
The Land Cruiser is a big(ger) and sure when one first gets in this seems like a challenge. I drive mine everywhere, and except for the lift kit, roof racks, shovel and HiLift ;D I could park it anywhere too.
Seriously, in standard guise they fit in everywhere and are no more difficult to park than any vehicle bigger than a Corolla. The Prado is an awesome vehicle, I'd be happy with one and my wife would prefer it (probably just because I HAVE a LC >:D ). The trouble with owning a Land Cruiser is once you've had all that space any other vehicle feels too small.

We've got the 120 D4D version. Love it, it goes everywhere I need it too, drags the KK without too much hassle - you just need to be proactive when going up hills i.e. keep the revs and speed up. Although the back door wont open all the way with trailer on, it does clear the treg hitch pin. If you have a manual handbrake leaver that sticks up I would be more worried about that.
However when its time is done - it will probably be replaced with 200 series or whatever number they are up to at the time. The prados are good, the 200's are great (don't let CRW see this comment).
-
Just bought a 2008 Prado to tow our Cub Brumby ......probably the door will touch on the camper brake..........and yes will clear the Treg. Will put a rubber stopper on the brake. Can't wait to hook it up.
Long as we can open the back to fill the fridge when empty .....
So far am loving the Prado

Cheers again everyone geez this is a bloody good website

2008/9 120 D4D Auto with Option Pack, it will do everything you need and more.

Bahahahahaha.........It popped straight out and I let the kids colour it in with texta, so it looks brand new.
Its just a little bit rusty so its going west for a holiday from the salt.
Cheers Nomad.

So roughly how many kms and price should
I expect on a 2007 d4d auto

We just bought a 2010 prado two weeks ago. I love it and so does my husband. So easy to drive, can't wait to get it out of the city.
-
80-100,000 klms, around $40K depending on fruit.
-
Traded in petrol/gas Hilux twincab 2004 auto with a great double draw system in the back at Nowra Toyota ............on a 2008 Prado auto....128,000kms Uhf, bullbar, roof racks, one owner and have had long chat to previous owner ( after buying ).............$39,000. They have a big yard down there heaps of Prado's .

We picked up our 2007 VX D4D for $47k. 53k on the clock, tow bar, alloy bull bar, rear DVD player, excellent condition, looked like it had never been on a dirt road, let alone off road- we fixed that :)

are you thinking petrol or diesel? my prado is used for towing, 4wding and also for 45 minue commute each way in heavy traffic every day. Does all three very different jobs well. Good balance IMO.
theres a few cars that might be worth looking at, but I'd have another one happily tomorrow. The only car I'd prefer is a 200... but im not robinson crusoe there am I?
-
yeah thanks to big tank, live axle and good go, Prado is the pick of the mid-sizers for towing.
Pajero is very close second; it has an arguably 'smarter' driveline, is a more dynamic drive around town/when unladen (if that matters...?) but that good handling IRS suffers when loads go into the tail/drawbar
Be VERY careful of service history and prior ownership - I have seen inside a few V6 petrols that have snapped cams due to the first 40,000km being driven by Mummy (on Daddy's company's books) with NO servicing: Crystallised oil blocks the oil pickup so the variable cam timing locks up.

Don't discount the petrol. Huge $$ to be saved for same model and they are h sweetest of engines at 200kw.
-
Yeah sorry bout that my bad I'm new to this

That white one looks pretty spot in to what were after cheers

Just ask the mod team to close one of them, that way all content can be read without jumping between them. Seems a bit pointless to keep both running....

Be careful with the early ones. A retired couple I know just had an engine rebuild after cracked pistons in what appears to be caused by over fuelling (faulty injectors). Cost them just short of $10k to fix and this happened not long after they had reported the known 'death rattle' at a service, they were told a fuel re-mapping would fix it and were charged for one as well.
It seems that it is not an isolated case but Toyota blame the low cetane levels in Aussie diesel, they continued to sell the cars never the less.
Toyota did a recall in NZ and Europe to replace injector seals but not over here.
If you have a few hours to spare have a read of the post on Pradopoint regarding premature engine failure etc.
There are two specific threads for the 150 series:
http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?19155-Injector-and-Injector-Pump-Failure-less-than-12mths-old&daysprune=-1 (http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?19155-Injector-and-Injector-Pump-Failure-less-than-12mths-old&daysprune=-1)

This is an associated issue on the 150 series that is thought to indicate that there are problems ahead (I think there is link in this thread to another thread regarding the same issue in Europe or it could be within the later pages of the 120 series thread):
http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?21124-Engine-rattle&daysprune=-1 (http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?21124-Engine-rattle&daysprune=-1)
This is the same associated issue but on the old 120 series (post Nov 2006) with the D4D engine. Note that this thread is extremely long indicating that the D4D has a history with poor injector design when first introduced:

how exactly do I get it removed ?

yes that 4.0-litre V6 engine is in my Hilux (rated at 175kW, I think the VVT system is different... I might find out why one day!) and for me it's a great all-rounder, accepts LPG, and is relatively good on juice
-
how exactly do I get it removed ?
You need to send a personal message (PM) to a moderator. At the top of most sections will be some threads relating to the section, and these will have been started by a mod. The title is underneath their username. Simply click on the icon at the bottom that correlates to PM and you're away. Ask whatever you like. They can basically do anything to the content of the site eg remove offensive posts, temporarily (or on some cases permanently!!) ban members, lock threads so no more discussion can take place etc etc.

I have merged the two topics together so all is in one thread

Thanks for that

Thanks for that
I see that you are on your 35th post. The 36th is a mandatory question about chinese trailers. (just thought you would like to know)
-
Yeah they go for eva 230,000 on mine and still going strong
My only reccomendation would be if you are going pre 2006 get the manual box as you will have the older 1KZ-TE engine in it and while a very tough and reliable motor it is let down by the 4 speed auto as the gear ratios are to widley spaced and this becomes very evident once you start towing. Once you go 2006 on they are all the D4D motors with the 5 speed auto
The 120 models with the D4D engines have reported some injector problems however these are internet reports and as a ratio to every prado on the road i would bet it is only a small percentage
-
We"ve got the 120 series 07 model and love it. We also looked at a cruiser and patrol but came to the same conclusion it was to big for her to handle and she wasn't confident to drive it around town. We love the prado it does everything we need it to do on and of road and we"ll buy another 1 any day. Hope it helps and good luck
-
Further to some of the negative comments about the back door - the positive side of it is, is that spare tyre is there and is therefore easy to get at and check i.e. no climbing under the vehicle to get to it, but because the spare is there and not underneath, means that they have a 180liter fuel capacity. So no need to worry about fitting an expensive long range fuel tank.

Was this with 70series tyres fitted? Mine was definitely effected by the increase in size and was only fixed with a dtronic. The larger tyres left a torque hole around 70k's
-
Mine was like sh!it between 100 and 120.........overtaking used to suck.............went from a wrx to a 120 diesal.......thats was a 2003 model...........did everything else ok.
-
because of the 70series tyres mine has travelled less k's (according to the odometer at least)

No 65 series i just found that with the goldstream (around 1.5 tonne loaded) it would hunt between gears and would drop back into 3rd and scream its guts out at the slighest incline. I have fitted a safari module which has alleviated some of this
