Post by: swanoutback2013 on May 01, 2013, 09:45:21 PM
Gday all im new to all this so forgive me for dribbling, we have just ordered our brand new jayco swan outback from caravanland in perth

Hot water system
Extra water tank
2nd gas bottle
Control panel showing water and battery levels
100amp Deep cycle battery
External shower
12volt water pump
Hot and cold taps inside.
"Lifestyle pack" includes
Upgrade to fusion bluetooth stereo
Outdoor speakers fitted
18"tv with built in dvd
Wineguard wind up aerial.
We optioned to
Extend a frame by 300mm
Annex walls
Tv point to external wall
120watt free standing solar panel
Bbq gas point fitted near rear power points under awning
Comes standard in WA with
Bag bed end flys
Roof racks
Microwave
Bag awning
Bumper bar

We now have the agonising wait until mid july when we can pick her up
And get out on the road and test her out
This is our first ever camper trailer and we are very open to any kind of advise
As trivial as it may seem that would help us out with our new toy
Wether it be things we should consider adding to our camper now or later( we still have a chance for jayco to add mods if need be)or advise for when we get out on the road
Any advis what so ever would be greatly appreciated as the mrs is already booking in
Camp sites for october and xmas holidays for us and our 4 and 2year olds

Welcome aboard mate that's an impressive list. Make sure you ask them to increase your payload. By the time you fill both water tanks and Gas bottles there won't be much left for everything else

Coulb you explain a bit more about that mate
Title: Re: Swan outback 2013
Post by: Black Diamond on May 01, 2013, 11:20:05 PM

Payload is the maximum amount of weight that you can load in/on the trailer without exceeding the GVM (legally)

The kerb weight of a caravan or trailer  (also known as the Tare weight) is the weight as it leaves the manufacturer and is usually the weight without water in the tanks or the gas tanks. The kerb weight should be on the caravan’s compliance plate.

Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) is the maximum weight the trailer is allowed to be operated.  GVM is the kerb (tare) weight plus the payload.  Operating a trailer  exceeding its GVM is illegal.  It will void the manufacturer’s warranty and likely to void your insurance.

So if you fill your two 90lt tanks your using up 180 kg's of payload already plus the gas tanks plus the batt. Can't remember what the standard payload on the swan is but its not a lot when running two tanks. In some cases they sensibly up it from factory but not always as had been discussed at length on here so its worth to check with them and if not get as much as you can. Won't cost any extra

That's the same set up as our 2012 swan except we opted for no microwave as we are rarely near power which in turn gave us a huge cupboard for pots, pans and nappies for our two year old plus we had the gas bayonet installed on the draw bar so we weren't bbqing under the awning. I also installed a diesel heater for our Victorian winters which really makes it a home away from home... Also opted for the Hyland hitch which makes it easier to hook up instead of the poly block if your looking at an off road hitch... Nothing I would change with our set up since owning it except the bagged awning is a pain in the butt at times... Hope you enjoy the new toy, cheers Smitty...

One other thing, we travel with a vinyl  rubbish bag strapped to the spare wheel  for rubbish so we don't have to travel with rubbish bags full of crappy nappies in the 4wd or camper...

Smitty I still have time to change the gas
Point location, do you find it better out the
Back, suppose it could get a bit smokey
Under the annex?

I also have the gas bayonet on drawbar. Works well.

I'm thinking maybe to move it to the very
End near where annex finishes so could cook
Outside or undercover depending on the weather
Title: Swan outback 2013
Post by: Smitty on May 02, 2013, 11:42:19 PM
That's the reason we opted for the draw bar mount so we not cooking under the awning but also had the hose on the Webber extended so if rains can drag it in under cover...
Title: Swan outback 2013
Post by: darrenh on May 03, 2013, 06:37:03 AM
I installed an extra gas bottle on the drawbar just for the weber. I have one of those fast connect gas fittings so that I can quickly connect the 3m gas hose to the weber.
We usually leave the gas bottle on the drawbar and use the weber at the front of the jayco. The back of the landcruiser is usually parked at the front of the camper and we access the engel fridge in the back. So the drawbar end of the camper is usually better for us. However, if based on the weather or baking sun I sometimes lift the gas bottle out and relocated the setup to the rear or side of the bag awning. This setup also lets us throw the weber in the back of the cruiser and go for a drive and lunchtime BBQ.

Congrats to both of you.  Exciting and fun times ahead.

Our advice: make sure you do a REALLY thorough handover at pick up at Caravanland. Allow at least 3 hours to go over, under and into everything. It is worth taking the time.  This includes unrolling the bed end flys and making sure they are the right size and fit. Go through the complete set up and pack up with the Jayco mob.  Do a few set ups and pack ups at home on the front lawn, and a few close-to-home shake down trips.  Allow time for a few little warranty fix ups back at Jayco as invariably it happens.

We had a new 2011 Outback Swan and went through a bit of pain to get it all good to go.  In the end we moved to a hard floor KK as that suited our needs better, but a Swan is great for young families - you will love it.

If you delve back into some of the older posts on our blog you will see where we were able to take our Swan. http://teamstozz.com/ (http://teamstozz.com/)
Happy (waiting and) camping!

Ha ha, we just did the last tent mission last week to Hamelin Bay as well, I'm hearing ya mate,  had the car packed to the rafters.

Yeah this our first camper, I think there will be a sacrificial burning of the tent when it arrives.

Cheers for the heads up on pick up

What a waste, burning a tent.  If it needs a new home I am volunteering to give it a new home.  I promise you some of the kids around here would love something like that.

If you are going to monkey mia stay at the denham caravan park rather than the monkey mia resort park as the facilities are nicer and it is only a 20 min drive to the resort anyway, kalbarri is awsome and we did esperence last xmas which was great staying in the national park for a couple of days of swimming

No mate didn't get the air con , picked her up everything seems good had a small issue with the outdoor gas bayonet position but we got that sorted in general handover went well, have started a few small mods , added a second 120a/h battery linked to the factory 100a/h and ran an Anderson plug to the outside frame to plug in the solar panels.put a pole carrier on the a frame but I'm thinking now either adding a second one or going for a custom checker plate pole carrier as all the poles don't fit in one pipe, had our first night "camping" out in the front yard and me and the family are absolutely luvin it.

Hi we have ordered our 2013 flamingo from camperland Brisbane. We have had tents and camper trailer kids have all but left home so we are getting back into camping. Did not know if to go for Jayco van or Jayco camper did not like the closed in feel of van camper is so open.Good to see this site has some good hints and ideals. We did get air con hope this is a good thing salesman said not to install but other people said it is a must have. We have to wait now till Dec this year or Jan next year to pick up. Have put all extras we can and think we may use have not looked at extra battery ?  Maybe something to think about we are towing with a 2008 Holden Captiva hope this works ok with extra water tank & air & annex walls & other add on's still should be under towing maximum. Any tricks or upgrades that may think  :cheers:will help make camping Easy and more fun would be a great help Thanks Rick.

We had the outside speakers on our Jayco Hawk OB and can definitely recommend them.
We find that when we camp, most of the time we are outside under the awning or a little further out next the camp fire. A bit of background music or the cricket /footy going are a great way of relaxing when camping.

I just bought a Van and didn't put the stereo or speakers in, I just bought a Bluetooth speaker and will take that inside or out depending on what we are doing.
I usually just listen to music on the phone so that works for me

G'day sorry for the late reply, the outdoor speakers are great, the only thing I find strange is the way Jayco 'switch'them out of the factory as you can only have either both inside and out speakers running together or just inside ? In our situation we like having the outdoor speakers on once the kids go to bed .very easy to rectify by a quick re-wire or just turn the fader setting on the deck as far as you can to the left also works, but yeah speakers are good
Also the upgrade to the Bluetooth stereo is highly recommended to be able to play and change music from your I-pod/phone without getting up is very handy
Got the Jayco up in shark bay as we speak for our first full week away in it(done plenty of weekenders)
and the family is loving it

Hey guys,  the roof racks that Jayco fit to the Swan - how many cross bars do they have and what sort of weight are they rated for?  We've got a few kayaks, and this would be a critical factor!

3 cross bars and 100kg is the weight rating. There is a fourth round bar at the back that I believe is just a spacer bar for the side rails.  It sits lower than the other three cross bars and isn't clamped to the side rails like the others, but could be used if absolutely necessary and some precautions are taken.

That sounds ideal, Dave.  Thank you!   Oh, whilst I have you :).  Today we talked to to the Jayco dealer at the Caravan and Camping Sale here in Brisbane.   They were offering free 120w solar during the show.  Are these panels attached to the roof?  I'm also assuming there'd be a standard size battery for power storage too included.  Or am I silly to assume?

Not 100% sure, but the solar is a roof mounted arrangement I believe.  Our Swan came with a battery and I'd think you would be right to assume this is the case, but I would suggest as always to assume nothing and ask your dealer.

You can choose roof mounted or free standing, if you choose free standing they still wire a provision on the roof incase you choose to mount them later

Did some more research.  They are mounted to the roof and come with a 100ah battery.  We pick her up next Tuesday the 19th.  For my wife's birthday.  :)

That was hot ! Water we think we may go with cube lot cheaper than Jayco factory fit. The pics did work I used ultra deck clear over bed ends top & bottom to help resist moisture. We also added extra 82 lt water tank and did not think to remove front jerry can holder as you can only use this with water it is a bit useless. As you all ready have 164 lt of water on board would be better with extra gas bottle holders. This just some thing for other guys looking to buy to think about ? Also we are towing with LX Holden Captiva 08 diesel all good coming back from Bisbane until we hit the Toowoomba range temp went to red  >:D coming up and lost power. We made it up and temp went back down but not good at all. When looking on the net and asking salesman if our car would tow ok answer was yes no problem. But now add over heating to the net and this is  a common problem with this car. Any feed back on this would like to hear ?
