Title: What the **** was that?
Post by: MrCruza on April 30, 2013, 08:51:00 AM
Cleaned the Camper and 4b yesterday after a very pleasant couple of days at Gordon Country.
Put it all away in the shed and inside congratulating myself on a job well done with a cold gold or 2.

KA-BANG!!

What the....  ???? Immediate thought was a gas bottle blew.. Raced outside, looked for a blown up shed, nothing. Hunted around, nothing. What the heck was it?

AHA! The culprit.

Glad that didn't go off while we were sleeping in the camper

Ah well. It was on the list  :)

Far out, you wouldn't expect an inflated tyre to let go in that sort of fashion........ while just sitting stationary. I would have thought even if the rubber was to split the air would just leak through the split and not blow like this.....

Reminds me of about 10yrs ago, my young fella and his mate asked if they could start my 240v compressor and pump up the tyres on his mates push bike, my young fella had done this plenty of times, though on this day, being two young fellas together must of thought watching the tyre get fatter and fatter was pretty cool (as 10 yr olds would)...... I was upstairs and heard an alarmingly loud BANG!!....... I raced down stairs to find two very wide eyed and partly sh!tting themselves boys, and one destroyed bike tyre.......... Of course the stuttering explanation as to why this tyre just happened to blow up was priceless!!
No one hurt, lesson learned....... especially when his mate had to push his bike home.... :'( .............. ;D

KA-BANG!!
Reminds me of being at training last Wednesday with the U11's
That morning I pumped up all the balls, don't think I had put that much air in them, noticed some of the stitching on a couple of the balls was a tad old and stretched. Anyway we used all the balls for a good hour.
I gathered the boys around to talk about who would be playing what position, KA-BOOOOOM.
kids fell down everywhere hitting the deck. Looking around we had no idea what it was until one of the boys pick up one of the balls,
"Mr Kenny, this ball has a hole in it"  ???
One of the balls popped.
It sounded like a stick of Dynamite going off trying to remove an old tree stump.
So I could just imagine the noise your tyre made.
 ;D

MrBitichi

I'd like to ask what the tyre load rating (found on the tyre itself (if you can read it still)) was if you don't mind.
You may notice something I have just posted on same page about pneumatic jockey wheels, this is why I ask.
Thanks
Dave

Reminds me of a time when I was young, poor uni student living on the smell of an oily rag.

I had an old bomb of a car (Datsun 120y) which developed a rather large bubble in the wall of the tyre. It never really occurred to me just how dangerous this was. My daily commute to UNI involved a small stretch of road that was 100km/h.

In typical fashion though one morning I drove to work (5 mins), was working as a console operator at a servo. About an hour after opening up I heard this almighty bang. Thought to myself what **** was that, looked around the servo, the forecourt, nope nothing out of the ordinary etc, until a customer came in and enquired about who owned the Datsun of which a tyre had just exploded. Gulp, that was me!

Made a real mess of the tyre too! I leant my lesson and bought a new one (although likely it was a retread).

A few years later, my brother was driving the same car when all of a sudden the front wheel came off and rolled down the street, car left the family after that.

Young and poor, those were the days!

About 20yrs ago i was following a sugar truck into Cairns on my old CB900 we were in an 80kph zone,  and i noticed the trailer on the semi bounce and buck a bit, then from under the trailer i seen an unravelled retread making it's way towards me.......... plenty of brakes and a big swerve seen a very large section of tyre go past my head, as it was spat out with force from under the truck................. t'was a brown jock moment  :D

Rumour has it he was banging away in the shed at the time but it was only the jockey wheel that went. Real men blow light trucks on tandem axles  :cup:

Hi Dave, The tyre was rated at 300lbs (136kg). The replacement I got is rated at 160kg. Should be fine for my trailer but I agree with what you're saying on the other thread.
In all fairness though this tyre was the original one on this camper and it's an '02 model, so the tyre is going on 12 yrs old. It was noted that it needed replacement when I bought the camper last year, just never got around to changing it.

Reminds me of my episode.

At the end of a 3 hour drive home from camping with the bikes and trailer on.
Left the freeway at the Berowra exit and just as we were in the cutting there was an almighty bang.
Thought what the *..* was that.
Car still going fine, trailer tyres looked OK in mirrors.
As we were only 5 mins from home I kept going.

Got home, had a look around - all OK.
Only found it when I was taking the bikes of the back.
Front bike tyre had ended up too close to the exhaust pipe and she let go.

It nearly made it home...

Cheers
Troy

Bugger but best it happened at home.  We have a guy who delivers the bottled water for the cooler tower at work and one day he had just wheeled his bag trolley out the back to swap full bottles with empties and this massive again KA-BOOM, the other staff member went out and yep the tyre on the trolley had gone and so too I think most of the water guys hearing for the day at least.  Not the best place for it in a bank
