Hi Swaggers
I have not seen an example nor have I found anything with the search feature.
Sorry if I missed something in front of my nose.
Has anyone tried storing water jerry cans on the side, that is, on the narrow side with water pouring outlet facing up?
If so, is it successful?
I am considering it as a space saver, long story so I’ll leave it for now.

Do you mean on the side of the trailer in a jerry can holder? If so we have 2 of ours stored this way and have not had any trouble so far.

I've seen it done with Jerry cans full of Petrol and Diesel, so I guess it must be OK!

I wish to do the same with the typical water can available which is the same size.
I did it years ago with 4 x fuel cans under my HJ 47 Ute, but just not sure about the water with the air vent ports.

I see what you mean now ours are standing up on the side of trailer in similar holders as long as the containers dont leak I would think it would be fine like that

I have altered the jerry can holders on my camper so that I can store the containers on their side. I haven't had any problem with them leaking, but the only thing is that if you want to leave them on the camper on their side when you set up camp, you can't fill them up as much. That's because if you fill them up to the top and then tip them on their side, the cap is partly below the water level.
That's a bit of pain for me, because I arranged the jerry can holders on my camper so that the container's cap is towards the back of the camper. I have then modified a spare lid/cap for the jerry can and put a hand pump in it. When I set up camp I swap the standard cap with the one with the one with the pump. That way I can access the water without having to try and remove the containers.
You could look at taking the containers off the camper I suppose and put them the right way up when you stop, but they can be a bit cumbersome to handle when they are full of water.

mine are almost sideways on the side of the trailer - set on a slight angle to clear my pole carrier (it is a smallish trailer).
Haven't had a problem with leaking, even with the style of water jerry that has an air vent cap, you screw it back down tight & doesn't leak (well, shouldn't - probably a good idea to test first ;D). The other style I use doesn't have an air vent.
Only downside is same as Jamesy mentioned - if you have to drag out the full jerry to use at camp it can be a pain.

Do you have any pics or know make of pump you used for this? Sounds like a good fix to one of the issues I have found during camping. Grandsons aren't strong enough to lift a full 40ltr jerry fromthe holder when Grandpa has had a few scotches and they want water :D

This is my set up. I just drilled a hole big enough to take the hand pump in a screw cap. And use another cap without the pump when traveling. I added a piece of tubing to the pump so it can reach the bottom if the Jerry can.

For me, I have a 85 litre tank below, and when Minister of all things money approves the expenditure etc etc. I shall have 2 additional 50 litre tanks outboard behind rear of tyre guards (in the exact same position as your jerry can) and have a pump and tank management system across the 3 tanks.
The twin jerries will be just additional storage for filling into the tanks when needed and to then be used to fetch water from creek - tap etc.
So access to fill point is OK for me. Just safe stowage is what I need.
I have in mind to mount them on the side below the rear swing out twin Tyre carrier I'll make soon, again, when I'm allocated the funds for such a thing......
