Title: Lifting bikes to roof of 4WD and off again
Post by: NeilH on April 23, 2013, 10:50:57 AM
Hi,

I like to carry the bikes on the roof of the 4WD. The reason is that I dont always take them off at every stop so I dont want to bother taking them off the camperTrailer before opening. Also I sometimes camp without the trailer. I have 2 bikes on Thule Pro bike roof racks - the ones where you dont have to take the front wheel off. Now my 7 yo just got a big bike so I need to somehow lift that to the middle to go on his rack.

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas or special tricks to getting the bikes on and off a 4WD? At present I use a stool but I dont know how I am going to get to the middle.

fit a bike rack to the back of the campertrailer and no more issues.. your fuel economy will be better too.

I put 2 bikes on the roof of the prado i have the racks where the front wheel is removed and i actually fins this easier as it is less distance to lift my method is as follows

1 remove front wheels
2 I stand on the side step and the misses pops a wheely with the bike and rolls it to me
3 i grab it by the front fork and lift the front end while the missus lifts the back wheel
4 attach front fork to bike rack and secure back wheel

WHen i get the to the camp site i just take them off and chain them to the goldstream under the rear bed i dont like to leave them on as i have already damaged a carbon bike as i forgot it was up there when i went into a car park
