Title: What is Australia's best Sarsaparilla
Post by: Marschy on April 20, 2013, 07:45:02 PM
Now I have to confess that one of the very first drinks my old man bought me in a pub was a sarsaparilla.

I'm sitting here drinking a Bundaberg one as I type.

I've quite a liking for the Bickfords sarsaparilla syrup being a parochial South Aussie, which I mix with soda water (got to watch those love handles).

What is your favourite sarsaparilla, or for the non devotees, your favourite pub squash?

Never had that one, where do you get it?

I've got to fess up, my favorite is Bickfords syrup, you can make it as strong as you like.

Kirks do a pretty good one too. I think they do a double sars.

Very fond of Bundaberg. Still, as it's related, the best I've had is home made root beer. I have a home brewing/kegging setup, so the recipe is as follows:

1/2 packet of Gnome Root Beer Extract (https://www.craftbrewer.com.au/shop/details.asp?PID=3428)
2 kilos cheap white sugar
500g golden syrup

Dissolve the ingredients in hot water, then make up into 19 litre keg. Chill in fridge then carbonate.

This stuff just gets demolished at our place. It has a caramel-y, biscuit-y flavour. As it is poured from a tap, it gets that big old timey head on it. I've always meant to try other root beer extracts, but I just can't go past this one. It sells out fast from the link above.

I dont mind  A&W Root Beer,  Other than that Wimmers or River port get the nod ..
Might be a North QLD  pub thing, they put a shot of coke in the Sars as well..

Hi All

River Port Glass Double Sarsaparilla is my favorite , Golden Circle used to to do a sars as well that was good but we haven't seen it for a few years now. The yanks do the best Sarsaparilla (root Beer) i have tasted. I had some great ones over there five years ago, but don't ask to named the brands.

Cheers
Graham

I remember being dragged around coles for hours as a kid back when they had a sit down
meals area and the reward was a sars spider in a tall glass with  a waxed paper straw, all
worth in the day. lol
Years since I've had a spider but I'm still quite fond of a sars and enjoy this mob's
products.

Being Bundy born and bred, the Bundy Sars gets my vote.  Cockroach juice my old man used to call it.  Was trying to discourage us kids from drinking so much of it.

They still do, but I've noticed not all supermarkets stock it. You might need to try somewhere else than your usual place.

A co-worker of mine has the Sars cordial mix at our bar with milk ......
Does any one else mix theirs, guess it would taste a bit like a melted Sars Spider .. Usually put about 4 nips of Vodka in my spiders ..

Edit : Guess you could say it gives the Spider a bit of BITE !!!!..Sorry cheesy I know but just couldnt help myself with that one ..LOL.

Another Wimmers fan, it's the only sars I'll drink.
Sars spiders are the best, nothing beats it on a hot summers day!

I started this thread for a bit of a giggle, now I'm going to try and get my hands on some of the suggested brews. And if I have to travel to get there, well I've got accommodation for the trip sorted out.

Its been a long time since I've been to Echuca, I feel a trip may need to be planned.

Weird........Wimmers is local to Cooroy......but my local seems to stock Bickford......which I like anyway, but you would think they'd sell the local one too.

Bundy rum and Sars (any brand). Discovered it many years ago at none other than the Bundy distillery itself.
