Title: folding up a wet campertrailer tent
Post by: imcleay@bigpond.com on April 17, 2013, 08:04:52 PM
We have  a camper trailer and we have camped many times but the tent has never got wet. We are planning f2f a trip to n.s.w. where it never stops raining, and we worry  about having to fold a wet tent over our bed. What is the correct procedure to keep the bed dry. We know to dry the tent as soon as possible, but can we keep the bed dry?.

We put a picnic blanketing the bed when we pack it up. Plastic side out. We actually have an Aldi cheapie.

Even when it has been an absolute disaster non stop storms for 24 hours+ and leaking canvas, the inside of the roof was not really all that wet. Only the bits where the leaks happened.

Picnic blanket also stops dirt on the floor getting onto bed in a normal dry packup. Tuck the blanket in around the sides when  worried that the canvas is damp.

G'day and welcome to Myswag.

The design of the tent will determin if water will be allowed to enter the tent when folding. My Cub hardfloor can allow water at the forward corners. During wet packups we put a plastic cover over the bed. This sometimes works but not always because in steady rain any water that gets in can run under the sides of the mattress. This is the one thing I hate about the Cub design that I haven't sorted yet.

We have an old woolen blanket that we always put over the bed and when wet we carry a small tarp which goes over that. At Easter we packed up with water pouring out of under the travel cover and when I put the tent up three days later the bed was dry

As Snow has said it depends a bit on the design of the camper...but to be sure, we have a small siver tarp, the size of a double bed, that we put over the mattress just to be sure.

We have had this a couple of times during our current trip around Tassie. We put a painters plastic sheet (idea stolen from this forum  ;D) over the whole bed tucked in and under .. also have another thicker piece that doesn't cover whole bed so we can throw chairs n table on bed and not worry about dirt etc .. has worked well for us, just need to be extra careful putting on and pulling off as the plastic is very thin .. I do think that we will end up buying a canvas bag - I think I have seen on here custonline do them, as that seems a lot easier  ;D

Hey, thats a bit rough!!! It didn't rain here yesterday!! Then again it might have....  Seriously though, welcome to "The Show" guys, as said, a plastic cover and if it is the last pack up of the trip make sure you open it up & give it a good airing as soon as possible.

We just use a Super Cheap Auto silver tarp a bit bigger than our queen sized mattress.  Through it over the top before folding the canvas up.  Works well.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

Happy camping

Waterproof zip on mattress protectors are available at Pillowtalk for around $80.  This is the one I have

Brilliant idea there Bernie. I've sent the wife out to Pillow Talk, Like thats a challenge, to look at these, but for other reasons.
She suffers from itchy eyes and blocked nose every day, this could be the answer..

Sweet..
