Title: Drinking water availability along the Gibb
Post by: areyonga on April 07, 2013, 08:16:42 AM
I will be travelling the Gibb River Road in about a month and would like to know from those who have been there where the best places would be to fill the tanks with water.  I know from talking to others over the years who have travelled there that some places the water can be undrinkable but would like to know if there are some good places to fill up.

Hi Trevor,

Mt Barnett roadhouse had a tap that allowed travellers to fill up. Water seemed to be readily available in most places a few years back.

Cheers

Yes and you could also stop in the middle of the Penticost and fill up there. The water was nice when we went through. Most of the water is Bore water but comes from the Artisan Basin so you can get good water.

The camps sites all have water though and showers so if your frugal you should be fine with te tanks for drinking if your worried. We only used two Jerrycans for two weeks.

There is a couple of safe swimming places on the station, one at the main camp and a creek that runs along the private camps.

Pictures of us in one of the private camps and the last one is the Pentecost River that you would not swim in.

The swimming hole and river that flows behind the El Questro campground is also the Pentecost River, but it's safe to swim there, just look out for slippery rocks(hubby slipped and broke his thumb first day there :o)  As Christian said, you wouldn't swim in the section where it joins the Chamberlain River. Big salties in there.

We also swam in Emma Gorge but it's FREEZING cold(look for the hot spring up to the right behind the rock), El Questro Gorge(the walk to the very end is really worthwhile) and the magnificently warm and relaxing Zebedee Springs. Some of the other swimming holes on the property were still closed when we were there in June 2011.

Loved El Questro!

Trevor - don't know if you'll be heading up to the Mitchell Plateau, but we camped at the King Edward River site and the ranger told us we could drink the water straight out of the river there, which we did for four days with no dodgy belly after effects. Maybe we were just lucky, but it tasted great!
We also filled up from the tap at Mt Barnett and at El Questro with no problems.

Cheers
Karen

We should try and join some of these threads as I have posted about this in another. While I do get o travel he Gibb 4 or 5 times a year (I know my job sucks) others also have great info as I don't always get to travel off the main track, some times we do depending.  It would be great to some how join it all together.

One thing I will check is if Gibb Station can help out. It's not a general use place but they are in a place that would be helpful distance wise. We also have a good contact with all the communities along the Gibb as my team and I look after all the medical clinics along the way. If you get really stuck then call me and I'll see what we can do - regarding ringing the community for you in an emergency.

They've got a section over in trips, tracks etc... for camping locations.

Do you mean maybe set up a general destination section like that where everyone can only add tips, hints, place information, conditions, website links, what to expect etc... and keep the actual discussions elsewhere?

Or have designated state or region discussion areas maybe?

Yea maybe over in the camping section but I wasn't talking about camp sites so mush as useful info like medical location, water, fuel and emergency help. I get a lot of PMs about it so I thought with question like where can I get water it would fit in a help thread. Where to get food. What to they have at Mt Barnett etc. Can I get fuel here or there. Is the Next-G service here or there.

Anyway, did meant to cause a rarcus ;D
