This was posted up by another member in another thread but it looks like the powers that be are going to stop camp fires from November to March in all National parks and State Parks in Victoria full stop. 5 of the best months of the year to go camping in Vic and we are going to have a blanket ban on solid fuel camp fires in 90% of the high country and a large chunk of riverside camping along the Murray >:( >:(
Better start caling your local mp and give him an earfull >:D

On the Parks Victoria web site they still have the usual rules for camp fires so hopefully all is not lost! There is a "Park Note" in PDF format that still says you can have a camp fire in the Murray river parks.

I wonder is the push to get people into the Ozpig style cookers??

It's been that way in SA for years, and it makes sense. It's the period of highest risk in areas where a fire is difficult to control due to heavily wooded and often steep terrain.
-
The article/issue is related to River Red Gum Parks along the Murray only. NSW hasnt allowed fires on the Northern side for years.
-
I think it is just a matter of time and especially so during the warmer months. The gas stove unfortunately is a very poor substitute for a camp oven or hot plate on a camp fire.

If you read the document, it is a recommendation by the Victorian environment assessment council. It effects the murray river red gum forests. It also recommends plans for litter and vehicle use. It goes to the government to be considered.
I think the numbers of prosecutions this year and issues with camp fires will influence the governments decision. There were lots of issues this year with a lot of fines, and escaped fires. The trouble with camp fires in red gum areas are they burn hot for a long time, people dont just burn a pile of sticks unfortunately. And given the way they burn, generally people do not have suitable provisions to put them out cold properly.
I agree with it within the dates prescribed. I don't think it will be long before the rest of Victoria's forests and parks follow.

The upper Derwent down here was burnt by an escaped camp fire. Sure they are a nice nostalgic link to the past but not needed for a good time when camping.

Yeah dickheads with fires have brought this on and it will become the norm sadly

Neither is alcohol, wonder how campers would feel if told its not needed for their next trip. And alcohol has ruined far more many lives lives than fires, when abused. And fires are harmless, if not abused. Another way of looking at it....

I think camping is Shit without a campfire, its a big part of the whole experience for us. We even make sure caravan parks we have stayed at allow fires. Sitting round a dolphin torch just doesn't do it for me... sorry.
How many raging infernos are there from the Easter weekend and the 239048230948 campfires that would have been around? The Murray and surrounds were PACKED as we found out.
I feel the biggest offender is the scrote that goes camping once every 4 yrs, and has no bush awareness or skills. The kind of bloke that will build a campfire 4ft from a designated fire pit under a tree, right on the edge of a large paddock of dead dry bush/long grass cause its his right to.
It's like 2589230498320948ty things these days, people need to be educated.
nbd73 agree x billionty. Ban food and drink while camping to stop litter. Top move.
But as per normal, humans will suffer cause of the ****wits.

isnt this the platform of katters new political party?
It will also rally against "Big Brother" and restore personal freedoms, including fishing freely and boiling a billy without a permit.

the thing is that the same morons that do these things will continue to do so where only the law abiding fill follow the NEW rules.

Totally agree with the above. We just spent 4 days at Broadwater state forest and the campfire was the central hub. Wouldn't have been the same without it. The kids love it and we cook everthing in the camp oven. Its like gun laws. The only people you stop are the law abiding ones.

I reckon one of the best parts of camping is sitting back in the evening around a fire. Shame to lose that because of the irresponsible few.

I've been wondering for a while whether a portable fire pit is considered a portable BBQ/cooker or a campfire by the authorities? If a campsite says no fires at all, when does a 'cooker' get too big to be considered a simple BBQ? (maybe when you can throw in length of 12" log perhaps? - But Mr Ranger, they are just very big heat beads ;D)

I agree with the above posts too, its just not the same without a controlled fire when camping. Easter weekend was actually quite cold at night and if it wasn't for a fire to keep warm & cook on etc. there is no way camping out would be as enjoyable. Harsher penalties for the idiots doing the wrong thing in reguards to fires.
-
I love camping, but enjoy it even more when there is a fire.
I recall our foprum trip to Fraser last year. The days were beautiful but the nights were bitterly cold, which found us huddled around the few OzPigs that folks had brought with them. Those who couldn't get warm went to bed, so there wasn't a huge amount of socialising happening after sundown.

I haven't been able to find any info on this, maybe I need to email someone and see if I can get a definitive answer. I hope we don't loose the option of having a reasonable camp fire, but if we do then hopefully they will still allow us Pig users to use the Pig.
