Would like to hear peoples opinions about how they went about upgrading their CT's.
I'm still running around in my first customline ct, but now looking and upgrading to a hardfloor CT.
Do places offer trade-ins or is it just better to try and sell privately????
-
Private if you can at a realistic price - what you would pay for it if you were buying.
Thats my 2c. Good luck!
-
I went private when selling my previous two camper trailers.
Anything will sell - if it is priced well!
-
Not sure of anybody up in Qld who does trades with the exception of the big caravan dealers.
As for pricing something second hand, the founder of the Trading Post used to advocate that if you advertised and got no inquiries in the first fortnight, drop your price 10%. If you are getting bites, but no sale, hang in there for a bit longer before reconsidering your price. Everything will sell if the price is right. Good advice.
Good luck

You have to take into consideration that when trading in you are going to get a price that will afford the retailer a profit when he sells it, so you are not going to be happy with the price they offer is my guess.
-
In the current market, I'd take a trade-in (if the price was reasonable) over private sale.
-
Hey mate, have advertised my campers privately and didn't have a problem. This was due to having a good look around to see what prices others are up for and price yours at a price that you are prepared to negotiate on, and make sure that the camper is spotlessly clean..... bit like if you were selling a care, have to be prepared to wait if necessary for the sale, but my 5 cents worth.

Agreed .....it seems that people prefer cheap imports over quality these days . I,ve had an Aussie made Cavalier on the market for 4 weeks (price negotiable) and had 1 enquiry. Disapointed I didnt take the trade-in option... >:(

Think Car Dealer when you think trade in.
It all depends if you want a quick sale or not in a hurry and your price.
You continually read buyers on here expecting a top of the range KK for $3000, and saying prices are unrealistic - maybe in their minds, but in reality I don't think I've seen many trailers on here overpriced for a long time.
But are they comparing the quality ones to Who Flung Dung brands on ebay for $2000?? Im fairly sure they are with some of the comments and expectations. Not starting a war, but chinese trailers have destroyed the market.
I'd be interested to see what the trade in prices would be, I doubt many would be happy with the price.

I think if your going to trade you have to be quite clever about it.
If I was a CT manufacturer at present I don't think I would be that keen on holding secondhand stock. They would IMO just be looking to turn them over asap, for a little if any mark up to get rid of them. So they are going to price that risk into the trade accordingly.
I think if your going to try and get a trade negotiate a cash price for what you are buying and then tell them about the fact that you may want to trade.
At least by working out the cash purchase price of the new trailer you have got them at their best price so you have somewhere to start.
I would estimate that if you think your trailer is worth $10K then they would give you around $6K.
Cheers Nomad.

Are we talking Jayco's or more the extender/van types etc??
Cause I've never heard of a camper manufacturer taking trade ins.. when we were looking and looking around with mate Tim before he bought only saw 1 second hand trailer in any of the places we looked - and that was on consignment. Most places dont have room for used trailers - most barely have enough room for display stock

agree

I doubt they would give you that much..
I'd think thats the price they would want to move it on for. Specially if they start to get 3+ of them sitting there. It becomes a lot of money sitting there really quick.

True, 2nd hand campers at dealers a few and far between. The inlaws just picked up an 2001 Outback Campers Sturt from Cub Campers in Sydney for $4,200 delivered to Melbourne! Cub traded it for next to nothing and wanted to get it out of their showroom a quick as possible. They didn't want to know about the thing. The same camper privately sells for around $6,000 - $8,000, I'd hate to think what Cub paid for it?
2nd one down in the link. http://www.cubcampers.com.au/the-range/pre-loved-campers (http://www.cubcampers.com.au/the-range/pre-loved-campers)
Sell privately with a lowish price for a quick sale. You will still get more than a trade in.

This question really applies to anything: furniture, cars, etc. People always want way too much for their used item and hence don't like the trade in valuation and hence have trouble selling privately due to an over inflated opinion of what others will pay for it. It's a tricky thing pricing a used product. Think of it like this: CT brand new$10000; after say 5 years want to sell. At $10000 you will get zero calls. At $50 you will flatten your mobile phone taking calls. Somewhere in their is the magical figure where a few will be interested and 1 will buy.
You always see people asking "what is my CT worth to sell?" on here, and the reality is that there is no correct answer. Timing can be a factor: people get nervous around elections for eg. And Xmas is also a bad time to try to sell something. On the other hand, August/September can be quite good as a lot of people have just received tax refunds.
I reckon if you could get a trade in that would be the way to go. So much less grief with people arranging to look at, haggling on price, paying. Trade in means its gone, no need to fix things and don't have to store it whilst waiting for a buyer.
And Jenko, that's my 5c: inflation seems to have got hold of even cliched statements such as this!!

Like anything we sell
A seller wants too much , a buyer wants to pay too little , somewhere in the middle is the truth.

Follow Me Campers just traded my camper in on a new custom built one. They will only trade and repair Australian built Campers.
I weighed up the pro's and cons of selling privately; people not turning up as promised, tyre kickers, setting up and putting down after every viewing, I am a shift worker so teeing up times can be hard and the amount of time it may take to sell, possibly getting a higher sale price.
Pro's of trade; takes all of the above out of the equation, good relationship with camper manufacturer before and after sales, very good price on new camper.
The change over price i was offered was too good to pass up so I went down the trade in route. This price equated to what i would have sold my camper privately but paid full RRP for the new one. But at the end of the day if looking at trading it is all about the change over price.
