Report in The Australian newspaper, Saturday:
IT'S cheaper for families to holiday at a resort in Bali over summer than to camp at the beach.
Soaring fees are pricing the traditional beach camping holiday out of the reach of ordinary families and one NSW National Park is charging a group of family campers nearly $6000 for a two-week stay in January.
The Booderee National Park at Jervis Bay on the NSW South Coast is charging $81 per night for a family of two parents and two children at group camp sites.
A change in the way site fees are charged has seen the price almost double in the past 12 months.
Privately-owned campsites at popular holiday spot Bateman's Bay are charging $86 per night for powered tent sites.
Scott Minniece and his Melbourne family are paying $90 a night for a powered caravan site with an en suite toilet at the Bateman's Bay Big 4 Beach Resort holiday park.
"It's rather expensive when you're away two or three weeks and it adds up as a family holiday," he said.
The family has holidayed at the park five or six times and says fees have increased around $10 a year.
"Its cheaper than the $110 we pay for the Big 4 caravan parks in Melbourne and we love the direct access to the beach, there is beautiful grass, a road for the kids to ride their bikes on and it feels safe and secure," he said.
The park also offers a tennis court, games room, mini golf and a jumping castle, he said.
While it costs just $21.80 per family per night to camp in national parks in Queensland, some private holiday parks on the Sunshine Coast are charging up to $83 a night for an unpowered site.
In Apollo Bay in Victoria, it can cost $70 for a powered private camp site, and Mount Buffalo National Park charges a $49 per night camping fee.
The most affordable place to camp is South Australia, where fees range from around $13-$16 per night in the state's national parks and private campsites cost up to $46 per night.
News Limited compared the $81-$85 per night camping fees with accommodation elsewhere and found seven hotels in Bali that were cheaper.
While this did not include the cost of an air fare, the Bali accommodation included an en suite toilet, a swimming pool, restaurants and other ammenities.
At national parks, campers must bring their own tents, beds, sleeping bags and cooking equipment and share showers and toilets.
Scott Suridge, who manages the Booderee National Park, said a 10 per cent fee rise of $1 per adult to $11 per night in 2012 was the first fee rise for campers in six years and compared to the 15.9 per cent rise in inflation.
He said an increase in the site fees for group campgrounds to $49 per site per night was the real reason why Booderee was now one of the most expensive places to camp on the South Coast.
"This is a place where you can camp a hundred metres from white sandy beaches in a natural bush setting but still have access to the same kind of amenities you would find in a caravan park," he said.
"Each of the new sites is still much bigger than an average large site in other parts of the park and we think their size, relative isolation and ambience still represent very good value for money."
SUMMER COST OF CAMPING (Booderee National Park)
Site fee: $49 per night
Adult (x2): $22 per night
Kids (x2): $10 per night
Total: $81 per night
Two-week stay: $1134
For five families: $5670

Wow... i think that's "Green Patch" your referring to olddigger, that's crazy prices.
But one of the prettiest spots on the south coast.

l will do a cut rate if you want an unpowered , rocky , wind swept ,on the side of the road , close to where l chuck my emptys site
Try Camps 4 or 5 or 6 at about $45 a copy , best investment you can make
-
Crazy prices. We just spent a week away. Flowing river, swimming holes, no facilities, shared with no one at all, and best of all free!
-
I suppose it is like my wife said to me once. We were at Jabiru, Kakadu National Park, and she was telling me to take one of the helicopter flights of Kakadu. (She had previously done a fixed wing flight.) It was going to be around the $500 for an hour’s flight. I kept saying that was too much, she said, well I will give you the choice. Either you spend the $500 now or I will put it aside and put it in your coffin! (I think she meant when I pass away of old age? ???) Anyway, I did the flight and it was unbelievable. Worth every cent.

Typical media crap..... Don't mention that the $6000 is for 5 family's 10 adults 10 kids till the very last line, hoping people won't read that far and book flights to some OS $h!t tip instead of seeing this great country we live in.
Forgot to mention we are on the Sunshine Coast at Caloundra $46/ night powered site 50 m to the beach ;D
-
Some of the NSW Central Coast parks charge around $120 a night in peak times for a tent site with a 7 night minimum stay.

Yeah saw that too. does the media really think that most people are that dumb?

Yes this is correct. I just got toweled up for 7 nights to park my camper at a Big 4 just north of Forster $896 for 7 nights. 2 x Adults and 3 kids under 11. Bloody rip off.
-
Then the Caravan Park owners whinge when people won't stay there and "support local business".

Yes but get free surround sound snoring with that as they use every square inch of the parks in peak.

try getting into the Big 4 caravan park at Hastings Point, you'll pay over $100 a night at peak season for a powered site if (and that's a big IF!!!) you manage to get in there. the waiting list at xmas time to get in is amazing, so no lack of punters willing to pay the $$$ figure being asked.
-
What a ridiculous misleading article. I would like to know how much it would cost to take 5 families to Bali for two weeks. I suspect a whole lot more than two weeks camping in a National Park. Even with equipment purchases included.
I dont know that Big4 caravan parks are rip offs as such.
However, they do not offer my anything that I want or see value in personally. Big4 parks all over the place are investing in lots of infrastructure pools, huge playground equipment etc.
All I want, if I'm at a caravan park is a toilet & shower. It does not have to be flash, but should be clean.

That's exactly where we stayed at.. Not happy. Lucky me, 50m from the beach and less than a foot from the neighbors. This is the good site I ended up with; after I told them to stick the first site they tried to give me, up the back of the park in between a heap of old rental and on site Shitty shacks and vans...
Check out this happy snap for spacing !

I think both rumpig and matt150 are referring to Big4 Hastings Point?
Great looking playground!
-
We are half way through a 6 week trip through South West WA and most places we have stayed were between $40 to $70 per night. Although we did look at one place in Albany that was $98 per night (no thanks). Currently in Fremantle and are paying $72 per night. Does get pricey when you add it all up with the fuel from Vic and beer of course.
-
We are currently in mount gambier, then on to robe, port fairy and torquay. Total time in CP for family of 5 for 28 days and it is costing us about 1k. Not too bad at this time of year I thought

I suppose it depends on what facilities you want at a Park / camping ground.
The big parks offer incredible play grounds and BBQ areas.

No, I'm talking about Beachfront caravan park, Redhead Forster.
-
Now just why would you go camping to end up sleeping closer to the bloke next door than you are at home ??? ???
Get a grip & go Bush all it costs me is Grog ,,,, that can add up a bit over the long term . The best bit is all of it is going down my throat & not sombody elses

yes that is where i was talking about, but Matt has since said he is talking elsewhere.
that is only part of the water park area, there's a kids wading pool and a bigger pool that has 2 waterslides for bigger people to use aswell 8) 8) on top of that you can drop the kids off at kids club for an hour and a half twice a day if you want and then the big games room etc etc etc. yes these parks are expensive, but when you take into account what some of them offer, you can start to understand the pricing compared to other parks. we weren't there in peak period (well 1 day was) the price is expensive enough when we stayed let alone paying the full peak rate.
more of the water park area....

sometimes you just need to take a holiday that is for the kids. our last few holidays have been up through the Gulf and across The Simpson Desert, this xmas trip was just for the kids ;)
-
It doesn't bother me paying the price that some of the parks charge as they are well run and good for little ones. The money it cost to run some of these parks would be big $ paying staff and rubbish removal is not cheap. But being packed in a foot from the next camper is not for me.
-
dav lm with you , after having been camping with world champ of the nocternal worblings its all to close for me
-

I think you have got great value for $$. Your kids will remember your holiday for years. Thats wat its about. The destination is only part of the story. The venue is horses for courses. Your kids would have loved this, and saved you $$$ for not wanting to visit other attractions.
-
This is why we love Tellabudgera caravan park.
Nice people all round and the kids are never bored.
I love bush camping, and I prefer this, but being a public place and during the holiday season, it also attracts dick heads too, and I have a zero tolerance for dick heads.

-
We tend to mix up the expensive with the cheap, our kids love both.
Whether its paying $100 per night at the Blue Dolphin at Yamba or under $20 in a national park it does not matter, the kids have a ball and great memories.
Some of our friends are paying $2-3k per week for units on the Gold or Sunshine Coasts, and the kids say they are bored, go figure.
-
We camped with friends of my wife for the week we were down there.
This was their first time "sluming it" it in a tent as they were one of those families that use to get a room on the coast.
Their kid much prefered the slumming it as he has free access to his bike, scooter and the swimming pool. Resort style accomodation dont provide this.
-
We stayed at the big4 at Hastings Point a few months ago. It was expensive but it was also fantastic for the kids. Something a little different to bush and beach camping. We would definitely go again. Us adults enjoyed it too. The water park was a huge hit as was the indoor play ground.
-
It's the same for those coming over here. It's just so expensive so people come to Broome, have a quick look and bugger off. If they were to make it more responsible then I think the small business here would do so much better and people would stay longer. Just too greedy if you ask me. >:(
-
Just got back from three nights at Big 4 Treasure Island Gold Coast. Yes, they are a bit expensive for a CP, but we appreciated the facilities on site with our small kids. Couple of pools, restaurant, movies, across the road from Harbour Town. Only down side was the ignorant people who apparently aren't required to follow rules or look after/ supervise their offspring. Not sure if this is normal for a CP or not.
-
Just as well Kit_e_kat9 is off bush camping otherwise she would chime in about how caravan parks are a rip off and bush camping is best
-
We are at Riverwood Downs and whilst it is not the cheapest we are amazed at how well everyone (including fur kids) are behaved. Music is always turned off at curfew and the place is just wonderful.
The only issue is the allocated sites and the lack of shade for most sites.

I never remember needing all the play equipment, activity programs and facilities as kids ??? It just didn't exist and as a result we learnt the important art of play. I guess my parents were also happy to parent ??? It's no wonder kids now seem to need constant entertainment and parents in a quest to keep kids happy are willing to find it, pay for it and use (and sometimes abuse) it.
I look back with happy memories of 20+ years camped on the front (beach) row at Pambula Beach where we would swim, surf, fish, explore etc. Rarely used the showers let alone the trampolines and dodgy mini golf! Now there are jumping pillows, pools, activity programs, movie nights talent quests... It's basically now a childcare centre with some camping available at big $$$ :'(
I want minimal facilities and minimal fees. A beach, river, water hole, lake, mountain or bush is often all I need with a toilet and shower a bonus.
Each to their own of course but it's becoming increasingly difficult to find places that suit my minimal needs.
Oh, and I don't think Ive ever been bored in my life and simply can't understand the concept ;D

just spent the week at the Williams River holiday park $20 per night per site boat ramp access and the river to swim in, all in all it was a good week for a $100. ;D

$7 a night gets you waterfront on Lake Eildon...
Ahough went for a run up there yesterday and jerusalem Creek was a massive let down... or should I say not what I had pictured.

I love the fact so many people are cramming into caravan parks! Leaves more prime free spots for me pick from in the scrub

We go the other side out of Goughs Bay and have a few great spots. Have no idea of the names though as it has been drive til we see something we like and setup camp. Never had to book or pay for a site, never actually seen a ranger come to think of it

not down this way... all the great locations are stuffed to the doors usually.. Not even standing room only..

Hey lost, you are looking at designated camping spots.
As TurboJohn said, "camp in the scrub"
So many people think that bush camping is not in a caravan park, but in a designated camping area with drop dunnies , like devils Cove or Jews creek etc, but it is not.
Bush camping is exactly that, in the BUSH, no one around and no facilities.
Where kids learn to play and rely on each other, without gadgets.
and no one for miles.
-
We just returned from the Clarence River Gorge. $20 per car load a night including daily rubbish removal & firewood. Beautiful river for kayaking, swimming & fishing. Ice available & tank water if you need to top up. Not crowded either, we had at least an acre to ourselves. It cost $140 for 7 nights for 5 of us.

Yep but it also great to go to a CP and have you kids make lots of new friends and spending hours playing with them or putting on talent shows.
Also the social aspect of a CP can make for a great holiday.

it's far from a modern concept this stuff, i remember going to Hervey Bay 30 years ago as a kid and swimming out to the trampoline they had floating in the ocean for kids to jump on and out into the water off of. there was also paddle boats in the water and not to mention the visit to the outdoor skating rink where they attached roller skates to your shoes with big thick rubber bands.
your shot at people going to these places because they don't want to parent is out of line in my view, we went to one of these places to reward our kids for how well behaved they had been on previous trips to The Gulf, across The Simpson Desert and up to Cape York but to name some of the locations they have been ;) personally i didn't really enjoy staying where we did that much, but i know my kids absolutely loved the place, so i was happy to pay what was asked at the end of the day.
-
I do both, to keep the lovely happy we do the CP thing regularly. But I also try and get away every 6weeks to the bush where we have even more fun just me and my sons.

Here is a link to Booderee National Park fees, http://www.environment.gov.au/parks/publications/booderee/pubs/camping.pdf (http://www.environment.gov.au/parks/publications/booderee/pubs/camping.pdf)
and also Crowdy Bay National Park where the least expensive camping is at Crowdy Gap Cultural Campground $7.00 per day vehicle
$5.00 per adult per day
$3.00 per child per day = $23.00 per day for a family.
The people in the Big 4 are paying $84.00 per day, unpowered site and they drive to Crowdy Bay for a swim, the people in the NP walk 300 metres to the same beach ??? It`s also a 4 x 4 beach which goes forever.
http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/nationalparks/parkCamping.aspx?id=N0009. (http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/nationalparks/parkCamping.aspx?id=N0009.)
I know where I`d rather camp, luckily I don`t have to as it`s in my backyard. ;D
Cheers, Robyn.

Those big caravan parks were a bit of a saviour when we did our lap. Our then 8 year old travelled with 4 adults, so every 2 weeks or so she was hanging for some interaction with other kids. She's a bit shy, so social things like pools, jumping pillows, games rooms, etc made it easier for her to approach other kids.
While bush/remote camping is fun sometimes, so is a bit of social camping.
As for 'Expensive camping'. It costs a dam fortune to kit yourself out for remote camping with the family these days!

Nay-DMax,
It is a great place, for mine Ferndale which is about the same distance from Sydney and still part of Barrington Tops has a better river and cheaper fees. The toilets and showers are not as nice but are clean and usable. Ferndale also have drop toilets at the camp grounds that are away from the ammenaties block so stop the long midnight walks for the ladies.

Bloody camping fees, going through the roof. While read this thread, I wondered if fees had gone up at Murramarang Camping Resort, South Durras, NSW South Coast, been going there every Easter for over 30 years, well before it became a so called Resort.
Well to my amazement, shot through the roof for the five days of Easter break. $85 per night for powered site for two adults.
Must be the bloody carbon tax.
Good one Juliar

Either place will be a big drive for us can you have the dogs at Ferndale too? Might have to do a google search on that one as well.
-
Yep, dogs at Ferndale as well.
Ferndale say dogs on leads at all times, but this is not enforced in my experience (Although we don't trust our dog not to disappear so he is on lead most of the time).
Lovely old couple at Ferndale, last time I went to pay the guy asked me if I had figured out how much, He just accepted what I told him (which was the correct amount). Work very much on honesty there.

Thats what we are planning on doing when we head up next year. Stay 2-3 night max then head some where cheap ( most likely out bush as we are self sufficient ). I'm not even game to look at prices :'(

Agree with you on the anywhere with showers is not bush camping.. But there are some remote campsites with dunnys I'd call bush.
I'm looking for somewhere new to me that's on a river without 12409823049823 people around! Agree with you 100% on Devils cove etc.. Anywhere where sites have fences around them.
We also looked at Murrindindi on the way home, $7/car a day.. but they are all fenced sites.. most sites were empty!
Might take a run up the Murray, but I expect that would be off the planet packed to **** up there...
-
I love bush camping, but at xmas time it's too damn hot to go to a lot of places. My wife and kids love the beach and so we pay. We spent two weeks away; Tuncurry, Tyndale one night, Nimbin a couple of nights, Lennox Head for a few. All were good, some were cheap, some weren't. Worth every cent.

I agree with that.. sometimes its better to just pay a few sheckles for a site. Nothing worse than driving 5 hours to find no room anywhere or the only site left is on a 45 and next to the sewer pipes.

WE just came back from Yarrawonga. Between Yarra and Cobram is pretty good. Was busy from Boxing day to new years, but alot left after that. Still plenty of people up there, but can easliy find a spot far enough away from other campers. The other upside is most of that stretch of river is crap for ski boats (too many snags), so that helps to keep numbers down.

Every morning a bloke walked his dogs up the track a bit, heard his dogs but never saw him.
Just wait for school to go back, go mid week, almost always deserted

Every morning a bloke walked his dogs up the track a bit, heard his dogs but never saw him.
Just wait for school to go back, go mid week, almost always deserted
that is platinum...

it's far from a modern concept this stuff, i remember going to Hervey Bay 30 years ago as a kid and swimming out to the trampoline they had floating in the ocean for kids to jump on and out into the water off of. there was also paddle boats in the water and not to mention the visit to the outdoor skating rink where they attached roller skates to your shoes with big thick rubber bands.
your shot at people going to these places because they don't want to parent is out of line in my view, we went to one of these places to reward our kids for how well behaved they had been on previous trips to The Gulf, across The Simpson Desert and up to Cape York but to name some of the locations they have been ;) personally i didn't really enjoy staying where we did that much, but i know my kids absolutely loved the place, so i was happy to pay what was asked at the end of the day.
Not having a shot at you mate or anyone else on here who chooses to stay at caravan parks. We frequent the occasional caravan park and annually at Easter and in my experience it is an unfortunate truth for an ignorant minority... I'm sure we have all witnessed many a case of irresponsible/lazy parenting in caravan parks and other forms of camping.
Anyway interesting read.

Hi Lost,
In Oct we stayed at The Nug Nug Reserve near Myrtleford and were the only ones there and loved it, even though the temperature dropped to -3 8) It was snowing on Mount buffalo at the time though :D
It`s a very large area with flush toilets, cold showers, about 80 powered sites ( not designated sites ) water and bbqs and a small creek. For those who prefer no facilities there are 2 other small bush camping areas nearby.
It is surrounded by the Mount Buffalo National Park and is 10klms to both Lake buffalo and Myrtleford and a nice trip to Bright or Beechworth.
We used it as a base for day trips. I don`t know if that`s the kind of place that appeals to you but this might be of interest to someone else. http://www.nugnugreserve.com.au/fees.html (http://www.nugnugreserve.com.au/fees.html)
Happy Camping,
Robyn.
