Title: Aldi - 6pc Cast Iron Cook Set in Timber Box
Post by: BernieS on December 29, 2012, 02:58:07 PM
Just noticed that Aldi has on sale 5th Jan, a 6 pc Cast Iron Cook Set in Timber box (box has rope handles) lid is stamped "Adventure Ridge" The set includes 9qt Camp oven, 3qt Saucepan and Trivet Base, 12inch Skillet, Oversized 2 Burner BBQ plate, 43cm lid lifter. Pre-seasoned. 22kgs/.  $69.99.  A great deal!!

Pity really.... I picked up 4.5qt CO with carry bag, lid lifter, leather gloves and trivet (lid can be used as a skillet) earlier today at BCF for around $80 - Campfire Brand.  I'm still happy tho, the lid as a good seal. (And my Lodge Logic grill pan was $57 from an oz online kitchen shop.)

Was just reading that.. looking at that tent..  comfy enough for 2, light enough to chuck in the Ute for over nighters. My old Supercheap one is looking very sad these days... but even though it was $69 back then (way way back) it has done a few miles. so time to invest in another quality item. ;D

I have had a pretty good success rate with Aldi stuff, some of it is crap though. The way I tell is the local aka Chinese sourced stuff is usually crap however sometimes they import stuff from Germany and that is really good. I have a hole saw kit (8 pieces) which is made in Germany and it has been great, cost me the price of one Sutton hole saw from Bunnings. We have a kids table and chairs set and that has been great too. I did buy some of their air tools, the nailer has worked well however the shears lasted one job. They also have a no bullsh!t return policy so I take the broken stuff back and get my money back.

Agree.

Some of their stuff is made under licence for Aldi's own brands.

XS is a Weaco for example.

Gotta say though it is a bloody depressing place to step foot into.

Have to agree with the above the stuff tends to be great or craptacular. No in between.

Why is it depressing?

Have had a pretty good record with Aldi stuff.  Budget priced doesnt allways mean cheap and nasty.  Have had good use out of their 3 way fridge, BBQ, tablet, various TV's for daughters, tools,  etc, etc.  Only ever had one return - their vacuum sealer, which didnt work from first try.  Replacement has given over 12 months service.

Years ago when the Turbo cookers were on special we grabbed a coffee and were at the start of the line at Raymond Terrace Aldi. the line ended up into the car park well next thing ya know this younger female I'll use that terminology loosely headed straight for the front of the line at the doors. All hell broke loose and the guy next to me said if she was a guy he would snot him.She heard this and said I didn't.think there was any men in Raymond Terrace,I then said to her I'm not from the Terrace she goes you look like you were born and breed here, wife laughs. So I said to her listen lay if you get what I'm after there going to be trouble.Doors open and the leading oldies jam her with their trolleys into the glass all I could here was don't touch me don't touch me,you had to be there it was full on.Anyway when I got home I placed the debacle on the caravan forum and guess what it was a she...t fight at most Aldis around the country

Looks to be the same type of kit you can buy at Rays for twice the price. If you were not a 'purist' camp over user, used it every other month and kept up the seasoning I'd suggest you'd get a long service life out of it.

I've had a pretty good run with Aldi stuff.

Can someone explain to me what the difference would be between a 'quality' cast iron set and a 'cheap' set?

Not being facetious, just don't know what to look for.

IMO not much at all. Just check that the lid sits on nicely and doesn't rock. This will let heat out if it does.
I have 2 ovens. A cheepy from Kmart and 1 my oldies bought me as a birthday pressy.(good quality)
Both do awesome roasts with no special treatment before or after.

I had a look at these yesterday. They look to be great value for money. The wooden box is great for storage, but I think you would need to create some method of wedging to stop the bits and bobs smashing against each other when in the box.

The lids fits perfectly..no casting dags etc to let heat escape.

In short..looks the goods...oh and while I was there..I spied portable dvd unit for $49 complete with USB/SD card input and 12v cig plug for car use. My problem is..do I buy 3 or tell the kids to look out the windows.

I picked up some of those "Australia Day" neoprene  bottle carriers today too at Aldi... sorry I know at bit off track. Thought they were a good price compared to some of the speciality wine / bottle carriers I've come across at various 4WD stores. Hopefully good protection for wine and even cooking sauces in the tucker box. ;D

Have to admit to being a bit of an Aldi's fan also. Just the centre isles though as i don't usually bother with their groceries.
Most times the centre isles are like an aladins cave full of gadgets and knick knacks that i don't need but i get them anyway.
Have never had a problem with quality or warranties. My only complaint would be waiting in line to get out through the checkouts when the two or three trollys in front of you have fifty million grocery items in them.  ;D

Hi all, sorry for bumping this old thread but I just bought an 8 pce set from Aldi for $99.

Good deal so far but I am concerned with the curing process. The product info stated it has already been cured and need to be heated with hot water, wiped out and thats it. What I found was a lot of particulate matter in the water, then after rinsing and application of vege oil, I noticed a lot of blueish grey colouring on the paper towel as if the surface finish was coming off on the paper towel.

Concerned this can potentially contaminate the food, what advice do you have? Is there a better curing process? Did anyone have a similar experience???

Thanks in advance

Smeg

Although its stated thats its allready cured until you get a decent coating of oils/fats on the surface you will continue to get a little iron partculate residue come off.

give it another good  heat up yourself and whack some good oil into it.  Then let it cool, wipe it out and then cook something in it straight away!!

The little bit of residue wont hurt or contaminate anything.

Havnt heard any negative feedback yet?  If you arnt professional campers who want to use a camp oven 50 times a year for 20 years they will be fine. A few here have their sets, us included. Just dont use it enough  :'(

Bought the 8 piece pack last night, pulled it all out to check the fit of lids, or parts not cast properly but found that it was all good.

Each piece has its own bag to protect it, ill use a towel to pack the gaps and provide some padding in the crate though.

There is bits of "wax" here and there but ill give it a clean on the weekend heat them up and see how they go. I could not see anything to distinguish it from the more expensive gear I was looking at

The occasional spelling mistake is OK, just as long as no words are left incomplet.
