Birdsville phones are out of action, and the town might be out of business until the New Year.
Phones lines to the outback Queensland town have been cut since Christmas Eve, meaning businesses can’t access landlines for Eftpos and credit card payments.
And many families have not been able to receive calls from loved ones over Christmas.
‘‘The whole town, as well as the remote cattle stations along the Diamantina River and Cooper Creek right through to Windorah, are cut off,’’ Federal Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott said.
Only locals with satellite mobile phones have managed to make phone calls.
"The Birdsville [medical] clinic, which is connected by a landline, has also been cut off," Mr Scott said.
"This could mean the difference between life and death in some circumstances.
"Landline communication in the outback is absolutely vital."
Telstra said its crews have been trying to locate the fault since Christmas morning, but their task has been made difficult by the large distances between remote phone towers.
Mr Scott has called upon the federal and state governments to invest in upgrading the ‘‘antiquated’’ phone lines to the iconic Queensland town.
‘‘It’s not good enough, keeping them cut off,’’ he said.
‘‘This town still relies on what can only be described as a third-world communications network. It’s about time we saw this upgraded to an optic fibre cable network.’’

Wow, thats pretty bad in this day and age.. :(
The Gov should get some Mobile Comms units out there, even a dozen Sat Phones for the medical people.

Yea, right. Won't happen. Conroy and his ill Informed ministers think that the Satellite NBN will be great. Currently there is no NBN sat in th sky (two years away), they use Optus which is over subscribed and in order to transmit at any real speed you will need a 1.8 dish o the roof - what a joke. I have to deal with this Shit everyday out here. Listening to all those Pollies telling you all about the wonders of Tele-health and the great things the NBN will do - what a load of crap.
Over here we have the longest single tower hop for Mobil comms. (seven towers) the issue we have now is that there is no capacity left. The idiots that built it decided that 2 E1's (4meg) would do the job and only allocated equipment to support that and now they want 1.7 million just to upgrade that run...Puft...

Don't get me started on CONroy, the only people who will benefit from the NBN are the companies building it.

its surprising they don't update, but not to full potential and charge a high premium for a only slightly better service when used in the hours most are sleeping therefore almost useless.....just like our freeways.....only giving 2 lanes when needed 4 etc but then charging a ridiculous price to use it....only to be sitting idol in a cue.
Perhaps they can introduce another a new tax to afford it..... >:(
