Can't go past the Toyotas that's for sure.  But like Hairs, I'm biased too.

Go to a dealer and take a used CRD GU Patrol for a spin, you'll have made your mind up by the time you get back to the dealer. Then try to get one still under warranty, and spend the $1300-odd to extend the factory (not dealer) warranty another three years (you'll need to get a late 2009 to be able to to this, once it runs out of original factory warranty you can't extend it).

JK Wrangler, perfect vehicle for weekend warrior duties, unreliable for touring/towing.

gurules,

I saw the light and stepped up to a VX TTD Cruiser after 2 GU 'Trols over 8 years. Nothing wrong with the 'Trols but the Cruiser is Sooooooo much better.   ;D

And I thank the nissan company for being so difficult to work with because without that I wouldn't have considered a Cruiser.

BUT WHAT DO I GET

What are you unhappy with in the GU, and what are you looking for in the replacement?

How much do you want to spend??

There would be a heap of reasons why people get them.  They are really the only affordable useable liveable solid front axle machine out there.  If your buying new they are a lot of vehicle for a lot less than the competition and buying new who would even think that there will be a problem with the engine at some stage.  Plus, humans have a way of blind eying risk which is why we are the most successful animal out there.

If I needed a rigid front axle 4wd I would get a late model patrol, new exhaust with egt and associated gauges and catch can and take my chance.  The reality being that on the balance of probability you will be fine and the added gauges will help.

I reckon the most important thing is to work out what your current and near future needs are.  This lead us into a Prado (could have been a Pajero no worries) as we needed low range, towing and 8seats.  Plus it was a mums taxi so needed to be more refined.

So if you dont need a rigid front axle then your options are broader (and of course more refined).

If you need that RFS the late model patrol would be fine.  But mercy that chassis/body is getting old and you can really feel it compared to the newer stuff.

Have fun.

I'm currently in a similar boat. Looking at selling my 4.2TDi Patrol for a dual cab ute. Have done the test drives and prices with the DMax LS-M Auto lookin good at decent price compared to the others. I now have list of extras and will next week look at what ARB can do price wise on theses extras. If the numbers stack up, there's a good chance the Patrol will hit the market.......So, having said this my fav was the Ranger but had the price to match. DMax was best bang for buck IMO, worth considering....:-)

Its getting harder by the month to find a good replacement "Real" 4wd... Theres dozens and dozens of pretenders out there that will go OFFROAD, but give it a couple of yrs and not even the Defender will have Live Axles.

Remember the artists madi gras float impression? they say releasing in 2015

The list is

Prado
Pajero
Grenade
2million$ series

or a world of bananas.

You won't go wrong there Teabag, We have the LS-T and so far have a MCC bull bar, ARB canopy and hoping for the tradie rack on this week. should have had the TJM snorkel last week but it did not tun up. Having Drifta draws fitted on the 10th Dec in Gloucester. As we do not do a lot of night driving probably will not fit spotties as the Projecter head light are brilliant. I think I will chip it, the only time I think I am under powered is going up hill with the C/T on at 1350 Kg. Economy is around 11L/100 with the C/T and around 8L/100 empty  on the highway.
