Title: Old Mates
Post by: Top.ender on November 22, 2012, 01:17:30 AM
Knew the decision would have to be made one day...everybody gets old but just couldnt fathom how hard it would be. My big gentle German Sheppard who for the last 12 years has followed my 4 kids around like an old mother hen (wether in the bush camping or at home) had to say goodbye. Lots of tears..... (not all of them from the kids and the missus) and 1 completley broken hearted master left behind.   RIP....JET.... :'( :'( :'(

p.s thanks to the staff at Balcatta Vet's for their help and understanding..

Sorry for your loss. I think anyone who's been through it feels for you right now. I went through the same thing nearly 8yrs ago with my 15yr old Rotty and I still choke up when hearing of others losses. We have since moved on and got 2 very loved and extremely spoilt white fluffy so called dogs which have made it better but will never replace her as such. Gone but never forgotten.
All the best....

Sad to hear that, they do become part of the family.
We lost our mate a few years ago after 14 years and thought we would not get another dog.  We ended up getting a Border Collie and although we love her, she is not the same.  I guess our other dog was with us as our boys grew up and therefore did become part of the family whereas our Border Collie is more like a very good friend.  If that makes sense?

Being there. Sorry to hear mate!  It not easy.

Sent from an overpriced, overengineered, outdated gadget that can make phone calls, sometimes.

Our first Dog made 14 years and while it was sad all we can do is live up to our responsibilities as pet owners and love them while they are here.

far better for the pet to outlive them than the other way round.

I lost my Sara over 5 years ago and still miss her. She was 14.

I now have Ruby to ease the burden.

Must be that time of year or something, I lost my best friend only a few weeks ago so know exactly how you feel.

I'd like a new dog but just cant bring myself to "replacing her" one day perhaps?

No good mate, we have had to bury three good family friends so far.  The fourth has a few more years left in him and we have had the fifth for about a year now.  It doesn't get any easier but I would not be without them.  Doesn't matter what sort of day you have had they are always happy to see you and that is were it starts

Feel for you buddy, it is a really sad time. At least you know he'll be at the never-ending beach in the sky, with strong legs, bright eyes and a spring in his step, watching down over you all.

We lost our beautiful blue (heeler) friend of 16 years last year.  They are always with you though.  Our old boy's collar still hangs on a hook near the front door ready for his next walk.  I think that collar will always hang there.

Hey Top Ender... we still grieve over one of our Border Collies we had to say goodbye to nearly 7 years ago... I thought I was tough... bald our eyes out.... we bought another near enough to straightaway for company for our other dog and she certainly helped us in the grieving process.......we have a 15 yr old BC now and we are preparing for the day...... we also have 2 other BCs who we hope will certainly get us through the tough times....

Thoughts are with you and your family mate...

Regards

Scott

I feel for you my friend.

I just noticed the other day that my own German Shephard is 7 years old (the real ralph edward).  He's my 4th Ralph Edward (German Shephard, (it makes it easy so I don't forget names or passwords) but then it hit me - he will be the last Shep that I will own and love, and his life is half over.  I honestly don't know how I will exist without a dog (or children - but I'm willing to try) but I do know when this Ralph passes I will be (yet again) a blubbering mess.  My condolences to you my friend, you have lost a true family friend but then again be gratefull for the time you spent together.

My Regards
Mark

Hey Topender,

our thoughts are with you ... we have 2 older dogs so 18months ago got a brown lab in preparation for losing one of them.

4 months ago it happened and we had to put down our 11 year old Yellow lab bitch Ginger.

This left us with the 2 boys, fletcher the 11 yo Springer Spaniel and Mallee the young Lab.

Well all the best plans didnt stack up ... we just missed the female Lab at the back door.

So ... here I am looking at a 5 month old yellow lab bitch called Dolly sprawled over the back door mat.

They get into our hearts and my youngest Michael still cant think of the old girl without ending up in tears

RIP Jet

Geez mate, my sympathies go out to you.. i've had a few dogs over the years and it's one of the hardest things you can go through...
i get emotional thinking about losing my St Bernard that i've got now, and he's only 3.. the best thing is all the memories that your kids will carry with them forever..

It's where my Digger waits for me.   :'(   I would love to go to the Rainbow Bridge when I die to play with all the great dogs that are waiting there for their owners ...

Kit_e

And the Poem:

Quote
The Rainbow Bridge
inspired by a Norse legend
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

If that doesn't get your eyes watering ... nothing will.
