Title: ARB twin air comp or build own
Post by: jetcrew on November 14, 2012, 09:04:09 PM
ok ,

looking for feedback on this

http://www.arb.com.au/products/arb-air-compressors/ (http://www.arb.com.au/products/arb-air-compressors/)

Expensive but all done and mounted up and in a nice carry case.

I have a bushranger max air   http://www.bushranger.com.au/black_max_compressor.php (http://www.bushranger.com.au/black_max_compressor.php)

so 2nd option is to build it all myself ,buy tank ,get fittings get case etc etc.. I am trying to learn from my recent kitchen upgrade that things that look expensive at the start may well work out to be cheaper in the long run after time is factored in ..

Anyone built a similar set-up or got advice .

thanks  Jet ;D ;D

As far as I see these systems the air tank is only good if you use them for things like air horns or things that need large volumes of air in a short space of time - so filling tyres etc the compressor is going to run constantly so air tank is useless - or stop/starts very regularly

better off saving your money and buy compressor only

Cheers

Jason

Jason,

was more so looking for the air gun and other air tools to use and possibly re seating a bead  rather than just pumping tyres .

Big claim they make about air tools though..hence my post to see if anyone actually has one and can give it a wrap or not ;D ;D

I saw a neat cheap setup in the back of a troopy on a work site.  One of those $100 GMC 30l, 2.5hp compressors that the bloke picked up from hard rubbish with a seized motor.  Tossed the motor/pump and fitted one of those ABR Sidewinder twin piston compressors.  Used the existing outlets, gauges and pressure switch too.

Now I'm on the hunt for one for my Bushranger Max Air.  I've got one of the above GMC units I use for occasional site work, but the damn thing still won't die after 9 years.

I have one going into my build at the moment, It will be plumbed in to a 11lt air tank, I bought this one to only pump tyres up and run a few air tools, But I am yet to hook the system up.

I have used the ARB twin-donk jobbie and yes it has the grunt to run air tools for remote area servicing/repair if that is what you need

I'm learning the same lesson at the moment in the area of children's cubby houses/swing sets!

My only concern with the ARB twin compressor, is whether a 4L air tank is really worthwhile. Sure, it's better than nothing, but I'm not convinced that it could provide the volume of air necessary to reseat a bead. That said, this is purely theoretical - I've never actually used one, so evidence from those who have should be rated much more highly than my meanderings.

Ping JK a PM - he build his own twin compressor setup in the new 100-series, including an air tank (9L, I think?). He might be able to confirm the DIY costings for you. I think Cam_Champion just put a 9L tank into this 200 as well?

Good luck,
Matto :)

G'day Theo,

I rate them very highly mate!! I mounted mine in a under tray box with a 6' thermo fan to keep it cool as I run it with the door shut, they do come standard with a small fan however they do get really hot after running for a while... I blew the first two up but ARB told me it was a recall due to a faulty thermo cutout in the back of the DC motors and is all fixed now..

I put a check valve in line to make sure it doesn't start up under load and has worked like a dream ever since..

I run mine into a 10 ltr tank and is great for air toos and esspecially quick pump ups for the truck and camper!!

Hope this helps mate, Dave

Single ARB comprerssor jobbie with the 5L air tank I had in originally. I was using the 95/70 PSI pressur switch that comes with the compressor and I EASILY halved my airing up time.

I have now changed to a 4L tank, but using the 145/110 PSI pressure switch. I have not yet had to air up with this combination, so I can not comment.

Regards airing up wit the tank, I found that if it had built up pressure and cut out, I would air up till the compressor cut back in then keep going for another 30 secs with the com pressor running and I would be at ~32PSI from 20PSI, then wait till the compressor cuts out, repeat the process and I would be at ~38 PSI. I would get all four tyres done in the time that mates were starting their third tyre.

As is currently stands

I think the value here is in the quality of the compressors; ARB compressurs are very very good.
I had the older style compressor in hard case, bloodhy brilliant if a little slow by todays standards. Being portable was terrific for when I needed portable. I have the newer version now, mounted under the bonnet. I still have a case for the hoses, tyre repair kit etc, so it doesn't save much time or space, and isn't portable.

I reckon get yourself a tank and maybe even a second compressor and set it up like Cam's.

Hi
Have you considered using the spare tyre as a reservoir?

cheers

yeah that's what old VWs did to operate the windscreen washers, I looked at it briefly, not sure if it can be done with 'off the shelf' fittings but it sure would cut down on weight etc

I don't know anything about the ARB twin compressor, but if you want to look at setups here are two more -

Mine - http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=24611.0 (http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=24611.0)

JK's - http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=21609.msg374804#msg374804 (http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=21609.msg374804#msg374804)

Hi,
I found a thread from 2007 in Exploreoz that is similar to what I got the idea from

 Link  (http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/50003/Got_the_spare_tyre_working_as_a_reservoir_for_the_blue_tongue_pump_.aspx)

I do remember though that there were taps near the end of the air lines to stop the spare tyre deflating while every thing was being connected.
A bit more 'plumbing' could bring in a few more wheels to give more volume if needed to re seat the bead on a recalcitrant tyre if needed.

cheers

I saw JK super human effort whilst at the springs  :cup: he could keep a hot air ballon up with his set-up ;D ;D ;D

Prob is i plan on only having the triton for 2 years and do not want to mount things into it , so the plus of the ARB kit was that when I sell/trade the trition it;s as simple as keeping the kit...

If I still had the crusier (kicking myself for selling :'( :'( ) it was the wrong decision ..but hindsight is a wonderful thing hey.

So given i know it will be moved on I think portable things are the best , My thoughts were to buy the kit or make a similar case kit with what I have , so i would need to but a small tank /case /fittings , the ARB tank that fits the case is $130 odd case prob $100 fittings etc another $50-$100.

So I will spend $250-300 and use my max air + my time and energy. @ $750 compleate I sell the max air $150 save the $250-$300 I would have spent =$400-50 ..I only spend $300-50 for the convenience and time saving + warranty and buying a well know brand and item with good back -up I think it's worth it in the end ..just was not sure if they were any good ,but seems it does what it claims.

Imagine the day when we have all the things we want ...how boared will we all be ..LOL ;D ;D

Jet,

In light of that, buying the ARB kit is the obvious idea. I've got the single-compressor ARB toolbox kit, and its great. I cut the battery clamps off and out an Anderson plug on the end, and its perfect. 2 compressors would be even better :)

Good luck!
Matto :)
