Hi guys,
New to the forum, but have been reading lots of threads....
We are thinking of getting a camper trailer, and have been to a few of the shows around Sydney. Initially it's hard to consider paying upto $50k for a tent on wheels, but then when you do the research, and you see what's involved, you can see how the price quickly mounts up. And the difference between the cheaper ones and the 30-40 models is obvious, even to the untrained eye.
I don't believe in doing things by halves so, wouldn't look to get a cheap one and work our way up. We have hired one, and loved it, and can easily see the more you pay the easier, and more convenient everything gets.
So what we were thinking was, to maybe rent out the trailer when we weren't using it.
Anyone had experience of this?
Or anyone on here have a trailer rental company?
WHere do you get insurance from - is it expensive - i guess more than private ownership?
I presume you may also need liability insurance too?
any thoughts appreciated.
hopefully we will be owners soon!!!! ;D
cheers

Hi Simon,
We are hoping to use ours often enough that renting out wouldn't be helpful :D
I would be cautious about renting it out, by the time you have insured it etc.. I doubt (just a random opinion) it would be worth while.

When we owned and operated Overlander Camper Trailer Hire a few years ago we had 4 x Trackabouts, our hire agreement alone was a $2000 document, then there's cleaning, insurance, pick up and return times, lost bits ( tarps/pegs/ropes/dust pan & brushes etc ) stone chips and maintenance ( wheel bearings, brakes, batteries, lights etc ).
Just keep it and use it yourself, it'll save a lot of heart ache.

........Just keep it and use it yourself, it'll save a lot of heart ache............
IMO, this is very wise advice.
If you were to rent it out, your 50k pride and joy would become some else's disposable item.
It would all end in tears.......... :'( :'(

I have not had experience in the renting area. We started with basic oztrail tent on our own 6x4 trailer then last year purchased off road trailer with more storage and specs but not up in that price range. If I was going to spend that I would want to use it every chance possible unfortunately no one usually looks after your things as you would yourself I agree with those above not sure it is worth the hassle

I have hired a couple of Kimberly Kampers from Andrew at Go Bush Camping http://www.gobushcamping.com.au/ (http://www.gobushcamping.com.au/)
He has a few Kampers for hire and does this as a part time thing as well as his job. I think I remember him saying each camper needs to be hired for 50 days a year to make it worth while. He has a pretty good set up but I'm sure it drains a lot of his spare time. The times I have been to his place he is handing over Kampers until late at night. The process takes a while, showing people unfamiliar with the units how to use them without breaking anything, checking vehicles light plugs and changing hitches etc often takes more time, especially when things don't work. I was there until 10pm a couple of times. His trailers start looking used (although in good condition) well before a privately owned one, which is understandable considering how often they are used.
I hope to keep my Kamper looking like new for as long as possible and hopefully get a good price for it when I finally sell in 5 to 10 years. I guess that's another way of getting your money back, it just takes a lot longer.

Welcome to myswag. I like the concept but as others have said there is a % of people out there that dont give a rats about hire items.
Good luck with your decision.

Firstly welcome.
When I was looking around to purchase our CT, I sought out manufacturers who also hired out their CTs. I figured it would gave me a good idea of what they looked like after a bit of use by people who probably didn't treat them very well. I remember visiting one particular manufacturer and asked about how well their rental CTs were standing up to the abuse whilst leaning on a particularly worn looking camper. Their reply was not encouraging as they commented that the camper I was leaning on had only done one trip. I was a bit shocked that it could have been treated so badly. My advice, keep it all to yourself and save yourself some heartache.
Good luck with whatever you choose.
