Post by: Estelle on October 27, 2012, 08:41:00 PM

Slow motion replays must be a big deal in the US

Taking things to the next level.

5000!!! Wow.

1000ffps give some amazing shots. This footage of Casey Stoner at 1000fps is something else... using the rear wheel to steer the bike, with rear wheel spinning faster than the front, muffler shaking, and his elbow almost on the kerb. He's doing over 100km/h here...

seen some amazing slow-mo footage of top fuel drag racing ...u can see every piston fire...the tires contort to gain traction and the chassis twists with the huge torque of an 8000 h/p engine is unleashed

Hi BHG,

Nup. The CT doesn't float. Does for a little while, then ...

The Australian Gizmodo site doesn't work for some reason. Goes into the never never, but the link points to the OS site which works for me.

Tried pointing to the OS site and it insists on coming back to the Oz one.

Ed: try this link young fella.

Hi,
they have come a long way since I used them in 1965.
Start the motor, drop the clutch (hope like hell the action will happen) and 100ft of 16mm film goes through the rotating prism shutter in about 3 seconds.
Open the camera, remove the spool and blow the last meter or so of film dust out of the workings.

The new ones now are retrospective  i.e. running all the time to memory, if some thing happens push the button when the action being recorded is complete, and you have it in the can so to speak.

Now where's me tin hat and mug of coco?

cheers

The digital world has changed many things.

Could you 'drop the clutch' on a 5000 fps mechanical device?

Hi,
I doubt it, unless you had a lot of film and a 'soft' start, the strain on the sprocket holes is considerable, and we only ran a few 100 fps.

Hi,
   what it reveals is amazing.
We were working on showing why Mirage pilots were breaking their legs when they ejected, and some weird effect when (non exploding) bombs hit soft ground at speed.
Good fun till some one higher up realised I was having way to much fun and I was sent to the dark rooms for 18 months.
