Saw these MDC hard floor trailers on their website today :
www.marketdirectcampertrailers.com.au/products/camper-trailer-models/expedition-series-voyager-rf (http://www.marketdirectcampertrailers.com.au/products/camper-trailer-models/expedition-series-voyager-rf)
www.marketdirectcampertrailers.com.au/products/camper-trailer-models/expedition-series-crusader-ff (http://www.marketdirectcampertrailers.com.au/products/camper-trailer-models/expedition-series-crusader-ff)
What I thought is interesting is that the first one is $16,000 and the second one is $20,000 , that's quite a lot for a camper and you cold buy a pretty good Ozzi camper for that kind of money. Makes you wonder if MDC are going in a new direction offering more expensive campers.

Look like a great copy of something some poor Aussie business has spent many hours creating, taken to a camper show proud as punch and some prick has taken loads of photos of and sent them to China to build. Prob about half price of an Aussie equivalent but I'm sure they'll sell loads of them. Unfortunate state of our soon to be not so great anymore country :'( :'(

Hhhmmm, that sounds like something that may have happened with one of their other camper models - borrowed right down to some of the very unique features.
Price of that MDC camper compared to the origional is good, but I decided that if their was another option available to me then I could not in good conscience buy a camper that is the intillectial property of another company. Stealing the hard work and design off another company (an Aussie owned and family operated company) is not good for the karma.
-
Looks to me they are copying the best soft floor, hard floor rear fold and hard floor front fold campers on the market. Can I buy fake Nike shoes or calaway golf clubs, no its illegal, campers are fair game obviously. It's like buying a "real"watch in indo, pay 10% and get 1% of the use of the real deal, false saving. Not for me thanks.

we get offord this sort of rubbish from. China all of the time and its dirt cheap

I had a look at the hardfloor prototype last week at their Sydney showroom. Not bad and for the money fairly good value but I will keep looking.
-
I also saw these at a show and they and you could tell they were cheap and nasty.

"We write to you from happy chingchong manufacturer in Mainland China! Greetings! We wish to do business with international superstar trailer showroom in Australia!" etc etc

Cheaper and more chinese by the day.

Welcome to Capitalism!
Apple rips off Samsung who ripped of Nokia all so HTC can rip them again. This goes for every product in a competitive market, I'm guessing nobody here buys after market parts for their cars ether? .
It is sad that manufacturing is dying in Australia but unfortunately unless we go back to protectionism and UN-float the dollar its going to continue.
I brought a MDC camper just because i cannot justify 35-40k for an Australian equivalent. Its just a stupid amount of money for something that has half its parts made in china anyway.
So why not take the cheaper option and fix the problems as they come at the end of the day the guy i brought it off was Australian and im guessing his staff will enjoy keeping their jobs and spending their pay within the local economy.
-
That first link of market direct campers looks like a clone of a Kimberly Kamper. It seems to have the same sort of lay out as a 30k plus camper.
Would I buy one, no way. I have allready been burnt by buying a cheap imported camper advertised in the glossy magazines.

The debate continues. Yes there is potential for quality issues, yes some of the money goes overseas, at the end of the day some people are happy to accept this for what seems like a lot of bang for your buck. I have seen a few of these Chinese trailers out and about most owners seem quite happy with them. These days peoples leisure dollar has to go along way so each to their own.

I had a look at some M.D. campers at one of the shows and didn't like the quality. I think you could do much better if you look around
-
I actually found a manufacturer of these in china.
I won't say if they are the "exact same" as the ones pictured on MDC's website, but the rear fold hard floor with Independent suspension was around $5800 FOB.
the forward fold was around $6500 FOB. I do have the emails from them still.
Honestly would I pay that sort of coin for an imported trailer painted pretty from an Aussie seller.. Nope couldn't justify the price jump.
They are making a dollar and putting some money back into the local bank so good on em and I'm sure thousands of others will buy from them.
But if I was going to spend $20k on a trailer There are some REALLY good Aussie manufacturers that would supply an awesome product for that money I think.
If I wanted to buy one of these I think I would buy direct knowing it was from china and expecting issues. But knowing that I paid a pittance I would have some coin left over for the repairs.
These cheap campers from china will suit people that go to caravan parks etc etc who really can't afford a new camper from an Aussie builder, and provided they know what they are buying then that's OK.
When people say buy a second hand Aussie one to a new china one, I think that's a personal choice too. I honestly think that the used trailer market is as inflated as the used boat market here. When there is more product than buyers it will probably drop a bit, but you really can't get into a good well equipped trailer for under $5k. Ive been looking for a while which is why I'm building my own.
That's great for the sellers, but shocking for the buyers.
For example. A 1980s cub, say it cost $7000 new is still selling for $3000?
would you pay $10000 for an xf falcon today?
I know its a shocking example but hopefully it puts it into perspective.
I know most people will disagree with me and hopefully I haven't put anyone's knickers in a not, That's not my intention.
Cheers

If its in good condition I think its a good value. What do you think it should sell for? $50?
What do you exepct for $3000? 2009 Cub?
-
i've seen countless times people advertizing early 00's campers that they would of paid say $15K for but the current version is now $30K and they are trying to sell it off @ $20K

No I don't expect to pay that for a 2009 cub.
What would you pay for an xf falcon in good condition? $10k?
but whats a fair price for a 20-30 year old trailer?
obviously it depends on the condition and features, but put into perspective its still 20-30 years old.
and in answer to your question $1500 and id be able to sleep. Can't find them at realistic prices hence why I haven't bought used.
As I said before others will pay the money and think they got a bargain.

I haven't been looking much lately.
I think camper trailers are very seasonally priced, probably the same as boats.
I sold my cheap chinese camper for way more than I paid and invested in it in September, but hey if you want it now and its an impulse buy well so be it.
I guess, the members on this forum are probably smarter than your average punter when it comes to pricing one of these things, which can be your own downfall when trying to buy against the guy who knows nothing and is willing to pay close to asking price.
Personally I am waiting on a Cub that I have been eyeing off for three years to come down in price another couple of grand and I will get myself the set up I have always wanted.............I have planned to start negotiating in April or May of next year.
Not telling who, where or how old...........get your own mark....... ;D ;D ;D

Yep, I think you may have hit the smurf on the hat with that.
I know a guy around here that has a cracker 2001 cub space thats in great nick, but he is only around $4k less than new so im waiting with baited breath as it hasn't been up long.

decent box trailers cost more than that.
\$1500 you'd be partying,,,, I dont agree with it, but thats how it is.

Lol I probably would be.
But a decent box trailer NEW costs more than that.
I can get a brand new gal box trailer for $2400,
I see where your going with that though and understand what you mean.
I guess what Im trying to say is boats and trailers are strange market. You certainly wouldn't pay $2000 for leather lounge that cost $4000 new 20 years ago and hasn't been redone in the last ten?
Just odd I think.

The second hand market is funny.
I sold my GIC extreme 2010 for $350 more than what I paid for it.
This is why I was able to pay cash for a brand new Lifestyle camper.
I have seen Kimberly campers go for more second hand than new because people don't want to wait for one to be built.

Agree. but some things depreciate at an alarming rate - look at Range Rovers.. $200k one year, $150k 3yrs later on a good day....
but not everything depreciates that fast. I wish Kedron Vans did, or Trackmasters, but they sell for new prices second hand
The otehr way to look at it is if you were selling it, you'd expect $3k for it, if its the one in the trader section your talkign about..
-
Yeah....value is in the eye of the beholder.
I sold an old 7x5 trailer that was rusted out but registered with a decent floor on ebay for $1200.
Then an old unregistered 7x4 with no floor or rego for $450.
Then picked up an 8x5 Nathan galvanised 4wd trailer with a massive front ally tool box and 500cm high sides that was 2 years old for $1900.
Its an absolute ripper, the front box holds my batteries and fridge and the rest holds my tent and other sh!t. If I didn't want this Cub, I would drop a kitchen and water tank into it and not bother with a ct.
Cheers Nomad.

I saw that one, thats def not the one im talking about. It was in the trading post not long ago.
The one in the trader is nice though. It was the older style.

Yeah mate I am stoked with it.
Its probably a bit heavily sprung cos the guy I bought it off used to carry his trail bikes in it buts its built like a tank.
Especially happy with the price.
