Title: Car audio players - no CD....
Post by: Bird on September 20, 2012, 08:33:55 PM
I havent shopped for car audio in years... so out of touch by a long shot.

So my headunit is rooted... wont play discs anymore.. started off skipping, but now since I tried to fix it  its knackered

So went to Autobarn, and JB Hi Fi to see what they had.

The dude started saying since I 4wd Im better off without a CD/DVD player all together - Digital Media Players...  ??? ???  Never heard of such a thing since Cassettes.

Anyway for $100 I can get one with USB, for $200 can get bluetooth, USB and other **** I dont know about.. I got 10's thousands of MP3's, so dont need CD anymore..

They have them with a tray that fits I Phone in them - you ppress button, thing pops out like a car kit, clip phone in and push back in...

Anyone see any glaring reason not to buy one without a CD/DVD player??

Go for it mate you'll never look back carry your entire music collection on something the size of your pinky. CDs and DVDs will be a distant memory before long. Couldn't remember the last time we hired a movie, 5 years or more I'd guess

Also look for one's that have SD card, I find it easier to transfer music to, do not have to worry about folders

USB is definitely the way to go. No more scratch/jumping CD, you won't look back

We run stereo's with no CD in our trucks, dad hasn't quite cottoned on to the USB idea, but I love it, the portability is great, never skips and a true shuffle of all tracks.

I haven't used my 6 stacker CD for a number of years. I just plug my iPhone into the car's sound system and away I go. My Fairmont, now 10 years old had provision for playing music or a GPS through the sound system built-in. I just had to buy a cable that cost me less than $20.00 to make it all happen. The more modern units with USB... sweeeeeeet. Go for it. You won't regret it.  ;D

we got a system which had CD/ DVD with reverse camera, also has a USB so we can play via the Ipod / Iphone. Came from Autobarn - they had a deal that it came with a free reverse camera.

If your buying a new head unit spend the extra and make sure you can blue tooth your music and answer your phone on it.

Just went for look around Ringwood to Blackburn/Nunawading.. Nobody had anything - like Staff...
The only place I could ask questions was JB in the Super Center on springy and whitehorse

Back to teh kid at Autobarn in Frankston, he was VERY VERY helpful yesterday.. He wins.

In the end I still stuck with Autobarn Franga.

I didn't go with the Media Player only gig, as none under 400 had bluefang, but will be out end of month :(

I went with this unit, that still has USB and other stuff and can play DVD's through to the overhead console too if the kids want if the DVD player in the o/head unit plays up...

The model I got is the premium version that is specifically designed for the 200 series with its additional surrounds

Bought direct from their website. I have had a couple of issues with the optioned tyre pressure sensors being, they did not ship with the original unit 9not really an issue but I contacted them anyway) and the tyre pressure kit turned up with 4 sensors instead of the five I ordered. A quick couple of emails back and forth and the additional sensor is on its way and they have been very good to deal with so far.

This is the one I have ordered and I optioned up with the TPMS and aerial signal booster. Took 3 days for the head unit and 4 days for the TPMS to turn up

Not sure if your still looking at it, but have had the digoptions unit in the troll for the last 3 1/2 years.
Igo8 mapping has been faultless (haven't bothered with offroad mapping as I have an overlay on my Garmin - should do it though as it isn't real flash)
Bluetooth for both phone calls and playing music is very clear
Reverse camera - should have got the infra red option ( basic is hopeless at night.

The only issue ( last two months) when the car is turned off and then back on radio station is not on a preset. All presets are there to choose though. Who knows?
I had to take a fraction off the fascia when fitting. No big deal.
Not sure if they have changed the screens in them, but they can be hard to see with the sun at certain angles.
Value for dollar I think they are pretty good value.
That should give you a reasonably unbiased opinion  ;D

So how did the installation go?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you as it has been crap at work.

Digoptions unit is all installed and working very well

Previous unit was also a similar unit and the comparisons are as follows

- sound quality of this latest generation is better than previous. Not that previous was bad at all, just this one is the next step again
- radio reception was better in old unit, but is still acceptable in the new one
- bluetooth interface is much more stable than the old one
- general interface is alot more user friendly than old one
- bluetooth streaming works very well
- i can set different levels of ilumination of the screen when headlights are on. Very handy as these things are often too bright at night
- i can override the headlight on dimming with one button, handy for driving during the day with the headlights on, especially using OZI

I know it is too late for you now Bird, however for anyone else considering it, I am more than happy with the Digoptions unit and would easilly recomend it for a lower cost alternative. Definately a better unit than the price suggests

Tick the option boxes and it gets right up there.  :o

Over $1800 clams for the cream-da la creme must have just about everything ticked. That was with out parking sensors.
