Hi everyone,
Been camping for the last week and nearly everyone we see has a satelitte TV system, either just for tv or for pay tv..... I looked on here but couldn't find any recommendations. I know when you go camping you should leave the tv at home but we have Foxtel at home and would like to bring it along next time to watch some tele...
Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations on what dish is the bext? Do you just need the dish and then connect to the pay tv box?
There are so many on the net and I have seen alot of the Minimax around on the net and whilst camping..
Thanks
Scott

Search the net for VAST this is the free commercial & ABC satelite service for Australia.
The are certain requirements though but if you travelling for a few months of the year you should be right.
Setup will cost about $600
Cheers

Hi Jenko67,
Can't you just record them and watch them later? I've got some blank VHS cassette's you could have. I don't mean to pick on your personal preferences (much), but can't you just listen to the crickets, frogs or no rain forecast on the radio? Maybe you could take me camping with you if you needed someone to talk to? I'm hilariously funny after a few too many beverages! ;D
Seriously though, can't help you at all. Sorry. We only watch regular tele and never when we are camping. But a friend from work says you can pick up regular tele with a coat hanger on the roof.

Ahh ha! Something I can actually assist with!
This is provided the PayTV you have is satellite and not cable. If it's cable you have, your going to have some issues getting a satellite box. The reason is
the pay tv companies will not subscribe to a mobile home generally, too hard to get money out of people who move all the time. You need a fixed address and a service at that address to accomplish this.
If you have Satellite PayTV at home (ie..Foxtel or Austar) then all you need is a dish with an LNB (they can be sourced from fleabay)
A LNB is the low noise block which is responsible for the dish receiving the signal. With the LNB you need to ensure it is set to the correct LNB frequency of Austar/Foxtel if you are going to use it. If not, you won't get any signal.
Place a pole mount which can be swiveled but also with a lock bolt in it. This way once the signal is found, you can tighten the bolt so you don't lose the signal. I know with the Austar boxes you can go into the settings - installation and see a signal meter on their showing the BER and Signal Strength. BER shouldn't ever get over around 80. This way one person can slowly move the dish left/right to get the signal watching the strength on the tv.
If you can a small crate then I have seen people use these to attach the dish to also, however last one the guy was driving a modified bus, so he had all the room in the world for storage of it!
Generally Foxtel and Austar Signals on the Eastern Coast of Aus, angle of the dish doesn't change, but the direction depending on where you are in the country.
An 80 cm dish will pretty much go anywhere these days in Aus for most parts on the eastern coast including Darwin.
A good website for all information about Austar/Foxtel for PayTV spec is http://www.austech.info (http://www.austech.info) and generally has all the information surrounding the different subscription tv services in Aus.

Fold up speaker stand (CAT. NO. CW2860) from Jaycar is cheap and light, holds the sat dishes well.
see here.

Jenko67,
I like the flashing lights as much as the next person. When camping I look up and there are flashing lights there :D so I cannot help you with this thread.
I don't even let the kids bring their electronic gadgets when camping, but we have not done any camping more than 6 days. I could imagine if you are on the road for months it would be good to catch up.

We use our foxtel satellite when we go away for 1 week or more in 1 place, with4 kids and the Mrs when it rains for days i need to keep them happy. If they are happy i get to go away more !!!! and if that means take the tv so BE it !!! everything we use is all run from 12 volts including the fox box i just made up and connector. Some don't run 12 volts anymore as i see with my new boxes from them.

Thanks Hosko.. I have Foxtel with the Satelitte at home.... I appreciate your assistance. I find some of the websites don't explain it all that well.

Certainly has and has been for 40 odd years but sometimes it is good to have tv.... i pay for foxtel sitting athome so may aswell bring it along.. ;D

To take foxtel is easy you just need a 10.700 lnb 60cm dish dual coax cable if it is a iq box which needs a dual lnb and a sat finder point north and look for the Optus sat no hard to find as
It has a strong signal on east coast. Dish can be bought for
Less then $40 lnb dual $25 cable $1 a meter and a
Stand for the dish I like mine as it sits on the ground and folds away for transport.
Otherwise there is vast you can buy for free to air.
