MEDIARELEASE

4WDDRIVERS UPSET AT PERMIT CHANGE ON CANNING STOCK ROUTE

From 30 September 2012 the AustralianNational Four Wheel Drive Council (4 Wheel Drive Australia), will no longerissue travel permits for the Canning Stock Route (CSR), one of Australia’siconic and most challenging four wheel drive route.

“In future travellers will need toapply for permits through Kuju Wangka which represents native title areas alongthe CSR,” said Council President Eric Morey.

The Council regrets the change whichends a successful collaboration with the Western Desert Lands AboriginalCorporation.

Since 2007 the Council has helped theMartu people with a permit system to help manage access across their traditionallands. Permit funds were originally targeted for community improvements andpotentially to employ Indigenous rangers responsible for preserving significantareas while educating travellers.

“We are disappointed with KujuWangka’s change and think permit fees could rise in future.”

“Weare concerned the new managers have ignored our efforts to develop culturallysensitive information about travelling the CSR and co-opted our materialswithout acknowledgement.”

TheCSR is a major tourist attraction for all Australian citizens. In recent times many four wheel drive clubs and other groups have put alot of effort into preserving significant areas and facilities along the CSR.

“Wehope they are not treated in a similarly dismissive manner.”

Mr Morey said that in the past fiveyears the Council has returned more than $56,000 in CSR permit fees to NativeTitle Holders but received no feedback on how the money was spent.

The not for profit Council representsincorporated four wheel drive clubs throughout Australia. It covered the costs of developing and managing the CSR permit system andprovided an around the clock online service for travellers including after-hourscontacts.

Hi Bushrat
I am 200% certain I advised people some months ago there would be some changes.  Had the Four Wheel Drive Council done what it was supposed to do, things may have been alright, but they simply handed out the permits without asking any questions, or verifying answers.  There has been a lot of damage done where people have towed trailers through areas where trailers are not allowed.
The actual permit fees will now be paid straight to the actual Rangers and the various communities, and as such the recipients will not just be getting a percentage, with monies being extracted for "adminstrative costs".
People will find now that they will be interacting with the actual residents, the people who know the history of the various areas, and are able to give accurate information.
Talking about "cultural sensitivity" is a politically correct piece of garbage.  If the people are uncomfortable with the way something is done, or something is offensive, then it is for the people to explain to visitors why this is the case, not an outside bunch who have assumed knowledge.  I know most people would rarther learn facts from someone who understands fully, rather than get the details 2nd or 3rd hand.
Regards
Tjupurula

Please note that there will be a lot of Aboriginal people on the CSR in the next week, as one of the main Martu Elders passed away recently in Mulan, she was born a nomad on the CSR over 80 years ago, so the various communities will be coming to Mulan to pay their respects.

Well said Tjupurula. It's good to here another side to the story.

I usually need to read a document several times to reach some understanding of its contents.

I read the media release about four times, and to me, it is a rather offensive document. They should be embarrassed! Not sure I'd be pleased to read it if I was a member.

Ed: I should expand  :-[

The release hints at a price rise. Sounds like a politician.
What the club has done for the WDLAC. Not sure what the club has done except made sure they continued to be able to use the track their way.
Covered the costs of setting up and running the CSR permit system. Well? After hours support. I'm sure the WDLAC was worried about that.
Etc.

Hi Estelle
The Community where I live, Mulan Aboriginal Community, is one of the so called CSR Communities.  My nephew is the Head Ranger here, with other young fellows working with him.  I asked him about the possibility of a "price rise", and his immediate response was, "What for, we will get all the permit money now to look after everything".
If anything, I could possibly see some of the costs going down a bit, as there are no "administration fees" involved now, and that is something also mentioned by my nephew.
I would be happy to answer any questions about this, and if I do not know the answer, I will do my best to get an accurate answer,.

Hi Tjupurula

We have never been to the canning. But have every intention of seeing this part of our wonderful country.
Having never applied for a permit to this area,  do you think it will get harder or easier?  Will it still be online?  We all know what administration areas are like.
Cheers
Becboo

Actually Becboo, speaking for the area of the Canning Stock Route, if you need to ever get a permit, send me a message or email me, I will message you my email address, and then I can get James, the Head Ranger here (and my nephew) to make all the arrangements.  By the way, within the Tjurabalan Region, the Rangers allow people to actually arrive at Billiluna and Mulan and get their permits at the community, it could not be much simpler than that.

Sweet. Thanks Tjupurula.
Sounds simple. That's great. I am glad we will still be able to see this area.

Here here. Love what I have learned already from locals in the real sense. Nothing better than a good camp fire yarn t get the facts.

Always sad when you hear of an elder passing. Best Respects.. See you in a few weeks.

We're looking to do the Canning next year so you'll have to give me the low down when I get out there ;D

Hi Steve and Viv
You guys would know, from first hand experience like when you were here, that a lot of the people have only a very basic understanding of English at best.  I am still very curious as to how an organisation got the "job" of collecting and dividing the monies for travelling through various areas.  Thinking about that, I wonder how many interpreters they had for the variety of languages spoken just along the CSR, let alone other places as well.

Later in the season, most likely August. Hoping that a few from over East will also make it. We also have a mate who will be doing it on a bike so we plan to be back up for him, should be a great trip. We will go South to North and then look to catch up with folks in Mulun and the surrounds as I also get out there for work.

Hi Mr Ploppy
People can go onto the net to get permits, or they can turn up at the northern end, to Billiluna or Mulan, and get permits at the communities.  Either way it should be easy anyway.

I was under the impression that to just travel along the CSR you dont actually need a permit. But if you deviated from the track more than 20m(?) to look at stuff or camp thats when you need a permit. I could be wrong. I wont take offence if you tell me I'm full of Shit!
We did it from south to north in 2009 and got the relevant permits including a side trip to the Calvert Ranges which was a fantastic opportunity for us. Not sure that you can even get a permit to go there anymore. It's a shame as that was a highlight of our trip.

Hi Whitey
A lot of the CSR is on traditional land, and some on station land, so most of the CSR has a permit requirement.  I see no reason to say that anyone is full of anything, we all have the right to be advised, to learn, or to inform others.
To my knowledge the Calvert Ranges have been closed by the relevant owners for the time being.  Having been there not all that long ago to meet with some people, I saw why it had been closed.  There are people who are not happy jusr taking photo's and it causes distress to see the cultural belongings of others damaged and or removed (not saying that was anything to do with you or anyone on this site).

It's always upsetting to hear of those that selfishly ruin it for others to enjoy. They at least could enjoy a photo for ever but now temporarily other miss more of our countries beauty....this happens way to often & I would hate to think what else us or our children could possibly miss in the future >:(
I wanted to go next year but mums big birthday bash has turned into a trip OS so it will have to be 2014 for me.....or Lotto win....lol

Yes, some people do really spoil it for everyone. We noticed too much disregard for the bush when we went. Things like cutting trees down for firewood(green tree Wtf?)to and driving all over the place not to mention bloody toilet paper, one of my pet hates. Why can't people just burn it? So I can really understand why the traditional owners get sh***y . I do too and its not even my place!
On a more positive note we also walked into the waterhole before Durba Springs, I can't remember what it was called, started with K. It was a beautiful and peaceful place and understandably a very special place. We just sat there for ages.
