Title: Where to mount fire extinguisher
Post by: britts on July 24, 2012, 08:24:30 AM
Hi everyone we leave on our trip to do the dinosaur trail on Thursday and I still haven't found anywhere to mount the extinguisher for the camper, it a hard floor with the kitchen pulling out the side, I was going to mount it behind the stone guard but was worried about theft, any ideas??

Theft can be a problem but I am going to mount one behind the stone guard, i think you need to be able to get to one in a hurry when the camper is set up or in travel mode. Lost put up a link to a good sized model the other day and I am about to make a purchase.

I have one at the moment in the front box but it is hard to get to in a hurry. I also have a fire blanket which hangs on the corner pole of the annex when set up beside the kitchen.

We have 2.

One in the vehicle.  if  on the move, this is probably the easiest one for me to get to, I can grab it as I  depart the vehicle.

One in the camper next to the kitchen.  I reason that this is where im most likely to use this one.

I see trucks with extinguishers mounted externally. If, with your annex up, you can access an extinguisher mounted on the stone guard that sounds like a good option. Those on trucks usually have a plastic bag over them, if this was black it would be less recognisable and less of a target for theft perhaps.

I'd rethink mounting an extinguisher very close to the kitchen if that is the most likely source of a fire.  Reasonable spot for a fire blanket though as it's use is reasonably specific to small pot/grill fires or clothing.

You are always better placing an extinguisher in an area that is easy to access and reasonably fire safe (away from immediate hazards such as gas bottles, fuel, flame sources). You want to avoid having to go to the fire to try and retrieve the extinguisher.

I'm also looking at mounting options for mine at the moment.  If you worry too much about theft, you will either mount it in an impractical place or it will be too hard to release in an emergency.

4.5kg would be great.. 9kg maybe impractical. You maybe better with 2x 2.5kg ones behind the stone guard.. One each side... May allow better access to the unit if theres a fire on one side.

Also if one decides to fail, you have a backup.
Your other 1/2 can also attack the fire from another angle with the second unit.

If your not sure of things with extinguishers (they are really easy), go see your local RFS/CFA station, they are usually (or were when I was in it) only too willing to blow a few units to demo to the local people.

Remember if you have Powder/Dry Chem extinguishers, even the 1kg jobs, you need to turn them upside down and shake them round a bit in your hands
As on rough roads the powder will just pack down like concrete inside the bottom and it wont work when you need it.
Do it every couple of days while your on the road... takes 30 seconds. IF you dont do it, you may as well have nothing.

Pick the one you think will be best for you...

Being ex CFA you can never have enough of them, you may as well pee on the fire with the 1kg jobbies. ;D

After playing with some fire at a club night, I'd like one big one rather than two small ones. Sometimes with the small ones you had almost got it out and by the time you had grabbed the second one the fire had kicked off again and you were back to square one.

Well I am looking at the 9 kg but it would be no use in the back of the truck so somewhere on the drawbar, one 4.5 in CT and there is a 1kg under the seat.

Agree to a point.. manytimes suffered from running out of water at a fire at the worst time...

But you can always have that issue with just about have it out. The 9kg is just that bit too tall I reckon to keep it out of the way of stones, and crap flying off the car. You want the top part to be clean and undamaged.

If a 9kg aint working, just walk away, its insured.

Not sure if they will be available in Aus, but take a look at the Mangiafuoco extinguishers - they are very effective and nice and compact for car / trailer use. I have 2 of the large ones.

Thanks everyone I ended up mounting the extinguisher onto the back of the stone guard on the drivers side as this is the opposite side to the gas bottle.
