Title: Water tank bungs - in or out
Post by: MarkVS on July 15, 2012, 07:36:04 AM
If its going to be a little while before your next trip, what do most people do with their water tank bungs? Leave the bungs out to let it breathe and dry out ? If so, how do you stop insects etc. getting in ?
Or leave them in.....but then can't you get growth inside the tank ?

I would have thought full with bungs in and some kind of water conditioner to stop fungus growth....but I don't know.

I leave ours in but only finger tight. When I fill the tanks before we go away, I just tighten them up.

G'day Mark,
We leave the bunks/screws in and fill. It has sat there for a few months and never tasted any different.
I've only ever drained ours once, that was to remove the 120lt S/Steel tank and have some welding done to it.
Don't believe I've ever emptied the water out of the 60lt factory tank poly tank.
I've heard some people drain them when traveling home, saying they will dry out and leave them empty till their next trip.
We also carry with us some Johnson & Johnson baby bottle sterilizing tablets, just in case we come across some dodgy  water, they have a real strong Chlorine taste and smell.
Anyway, that's what we do.

As above basically.
If we have filled from country/dodgy water supplies anywhere on the trip I will drain the tank when we get home, drop in a chlorine tablet (two or three  of those camping 'water purifier' tablets)  and leave it for a week. After that, drain and leave until the next trip, just because it is a bit of weight off the springs/tyres whilst they are sitting still.

But if the water has all been good/city water ( not good, but chlorinated)  then a fill and leave full policy exists.

But the CT is usually up on car stands when not expected to be in use for longer than 2 months  to take the load off the springs and tyres. Springs cop a squirt of Linox as well.

Thanks everyone...looks like I'll leave them in and worry more about the water quality than things growing in it.

We drop any left over water, and refill. Then I drop it again while packing and refill for trip. So far so good. Water goes on the lawn, so no waste, and tank is getting regular flushes.

we drop our water out of our tank on the Swan and let the tank dry out. dont think there is a best or worst way to do it just personal preference i think.

Rear tank empty & front tank full...lol
No seriously I drain my tanks for the trip home from where ever and they remain empty until next trip.
Nothing noticed but I do use water filters.

It all depends what day it is, what time I get home, and the position of the moons cycle, as to whether I drain the tanks or not.

But the 1 constant is Bung in.  I would never leave the bung out, bugs get in, light gets in and therefore mould.

i've only flushed the tank twice with "Tank Clean",
Once after filling up at canberra... ychk
and Once when it was new.
