Just a note.
Apparently in the Illawarra (and maybe other regions), the latest "game" for our gen y,z is to extend your winch cable and pull it under the vehicle, connect to something at the back and then turn the winch on, therefore trying to pull both bumpers together.
The advice is to electrically isolate the winch when you are away from the vehicle and to check before you drive away. Common to wrap the cable around the tailshaft too.
Little pricks.

had that same thing happen up this way a few years ago.
the young blokes thought it was a real good joke >:(
on my winch wiring is one of those isolation switches mounted under the bonnet (right out of sight) on the + side. another advantage to doing that is you dont have constant power running to the winch motor and you have a real quick off switch in case something goes wrong.

yep can be done that way. in a 3 pin plug all you have to do if connect the right two wires and away it goes. no rocket science to learn if it dont work with those two just to go to the next two

Friends of ours drove to Brisbane for a holiday about a year ago and had this happen to them. They removed their winch totally.

Happened to a guy we work with only a few weeks ago. Some may scoff, but sucks if it happens to you.

Have herd about a case where some scum put the cable over the roof hooked onto the twobar

I was thinking that one could remove the hook and use a padlock instead. Often we don't need the hook anyway, as a shackle is required.

Surely if this happened people would take pictures, I know I sure would. Not doubting you but get your work mate to show us the pictures.......please.

If you contact your insurer i did GIO they have number of claims every year in regards to this issue with winches in shopping centres car parks .

Another reason to not have your solenoid box on show and to fit an isolation switch on the -ve line.

How is isolating the switch going to prevent some f-wit from freespooling the cable out and connecting it to another vehicle? Even my suggestion of a padlock only stops them taking it from the end, it could still be looped out in some instances, although my cable is tensioned up so I doubt anyone could disengage the gearbox.
Apart from the potential and obvious safety risks to people, this is what insurance is for.
There seems to be some handwringing and Maude Flanders type exclamations "What about the children" on the swag presently.

Or as they did to my friends, on to the tail shaft. Not cool. The rope cut into the bulbar on their wagon before he got out to look what was wrong. That is why they have a bullbar but no winch now.
Unfortunately kids have no fear of adults, the law or anyone anymore. No social respect for anyone or anything which I think comes down to parenting BUT we won't go down that road!!

I fitted a isolater close to the battery for this and safety reasons. I suppose you could also spool the rope off But as Jules said this is why we have insurance I also think if this was more widespread we would see some photos.
