Title: Car wax
Post by: Doug.b on June 11, 2012, 10:45:45 PM
I usually wax my vehicle twice a year and just wondering if other my swaggers wax their vehicles and what wax products they use.
I use this http://www.meguiars.com.au/products/car-care/paint-care/polish-protect/gold-class-wax/ (http://www.meguiars.com.au/products/car-care/paint-care/polish-protect/gold-class-wax/)
It goes on easy and not to hard to shine up. I find it that dirt and bugs come off easier after waxing. It usually lasts for half dozens washers before waxing needs reapplying.

A go over with a clay bar detailing kit and then Meguiars NXT.  Lasts months and cars look like they're coated in glass.

It's like a big block that is sort of like blue-tac.  It cleans all the build up of impurities and junk from the paint leaving it feeling really smooth.  It's then a really good prep surface for waxing.

How many hours does it take to do the clay bar thing?

Cheers Nomad.

Autoglym products are great - they don't bring in a claybar to Australia AFAIK but there polish, wax's, and treatments are all top notch and IMHO easier to use than Meguiars

I use the mothers clay bar with just some car wash diluted in a bottle

And to the OP - you should wash your black car more than once a month otherwise it'll be grey before you know it

Cheers

It's pretty quick... I'd take about 30mins for my Golf and 40mins for the Discovery.  It doesn't polish, just cleans, so it doen't wear the paint down.

Best product i have found for the old cruiser by far is Nufinish.. have never seen another product that makes the water bead like it.

On another tact, I've found the wax stuff at Shiners carwash is awesome on the windows/windscreen for making the rain bead and piss off real fast. To the point you only need wipers when its really really bucketing down.
The stuff is better than any of the window bottle additives I've tried.

OK, I'll play. I prefer a sealant to a wax - I'm happy to give up a bit of shine for the longer-lasting protection that you get.

Favourite: Poor Boys EX-P

When it comes to clay, I prefer the Concourse kit. It's cheap, and works just as well IMHO as the big brands.

Polish-wise, I'm back to either Poorboys (SSR1,2 or 3), or the Autoglym range. I've used the AG Paint Renovator and AG SRP to very good effect on bad condition paint. All of these work well well by hand, but better with a machine. The SRP is like the NuFinish, but (agian, IMHO) a lot higher quality and longer lasting.

Glass-wise, P21S in the washer bottle, and Rain-X coating on the outside of all windows (the Rain-X gives that same effect Lost is talking about). Warm water and a soft microfibre cloth for the inside. Interior trim gets some more PoorBoys loving - Natural Look here for some bubblegum flavour! 303 for the external trim.

http://www.waxit.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=8&category_id=22&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1 (http://www.waxit.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=8&category_id=22&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1)

Tyre shine is AutoGlym - the Instant Tyre Shine isn't as shiney as the other ones - I like my tyres black, not reflective. P21S for the wheel cleaner.

And the wash is normally DP Extreme Foam through the foam gun, and then a bit of cheaper suds mixed into the buckets. I'm all out though, so might try something different this time around.

Of course, this stuff doesn't get much use on the Pathfinder - I give it a good 2 day going over around once a year, and it seems to hold it's condition pretty well. It's normal routine is a pressure-cleaning to remove the dirt, foamed-up and left to soak, pressure-cleaned off and then handwashed. Rinsed off and then toweled dry (with one of these: http://www.waxit.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=32&category_id=26&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1 (http://www.waxit.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=32&category_id=26&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1)). Quick and easy, and makes it sparkle.

Cheers!
Matto :)

Another vote for poorboys from waxit, so easy to apply (pretty much wipe on wipe off) and the finish lasts forever compared to wax.  For the best finish you need to clean and wax the car perfectly once and then put the poorboys EX-P over it.  After that you just redo the poorboys every few months to keep the sealant cover up.
