Have stayed there once or twice out of season. Gets really busy during school holidays. Beach is not patrolled, nor are dogs allowed on the beach due to bird population. If you have a dog who likes to swim its a short trip to Patches Beach. Don't recalled being bothered by sandies too much. Take ya Bushman's just in case tho.  Also fyi the beach at South Ballina is known for dangerous rips, a couple drowned there back in 2010. http://www.news.com.au/national-old/south-ballina-signs-to-protect-birds-not-humans/story-e6frfkvr-1225821875825 (http://www.news.com.au/national-old/south-ballina-signs-to-protect-birds-not-humans/story-e6frfkvr-1225821875825)

BernieS

Thanks for the info, it doesn't sound like a good place to go with young ones, my two love the beach and wouldn't like to be that close to the beach and tell them they cannot go in.

A beach is a beach- I grew up there at Ballina.

common sence and you will be right- depends on when you are thinking not many beaches will be patrolled from this point forward in NSW.

don't go to Tallabudgura creek camping?

for example.

FWIW- I'm heading there with my kids and dog 2nd week of the QLD Easter school holidays- NSW and QLD are completely different this year so we have been able to get beachside camping all the way to Sydney

Pretty Expensive for what is there i think. Costs a bit for the ferry if you want to come into town.
If you don't need power check out  Flat Rock  (http://www.flatrockcamping.com.au/cp_themes/default/home.asp) at Skennars Head.

Camped there long weekend of gold coast show in september last year. Little dissapointed fires in braziers only, facilities adequate but should be better,I think ferry across was $9 one way. Seemed to be the place for local hoons to go camping.I think you could find a better place (just my opinion). Beautiful beaches in this part of the world.
