I am finding it a little hard to get around, however like anything it has only been about an hour or so and I expect that it will become easier.... But the first thing I have noticed is How bloody fast it is at new install... Boot time has been at least halved and even the Internet seems twice as quick... Very impressed so far....
I ran partition magic and split the drive in 2 and done a duel boot install off a iso and dvd very easy to install....
I am liking it so far.....

Is it designed more for tablet or mobile devices than desktop/laptop devices.
Whenever I have a quick read of the 'previews', they seem to mention swiping rather than keyboard or mouse movements.
Looks rather clunky.
Do you have the option of 'interface'? PC or Tablet style?
Nice to see it is quick. Guess it is very much cut down to boot up. Is there a delay after bootup before you can do anything worthwhile? M$ seemed to make the startup quicker in earlier versions such as Vista, but it still took forever to get to the point where you could do anything with the PC.
-
I've had a copy due to my work for a while and it is fantastic of tablet style devices but I was not too impressed on a standard laptop. I certainly did seem to run quicker but navigation with a mouse was a pain. I will probably put it on my work machine when we get the RTM version but certainly won't be rushing to run it out onto the rest of the network.
-
The keyboard experience is much improved in this release.
-
Still running XP, & that's where I'll be staying for awhile ;)
Got a copy of Windows 1.0 if anyone wants a play ;D

Just means he's ran a program to make his OS see his single hard-drive as 2. He then installed Win 8 on the 2nd hdd & now has the option of selecting his default OS, or Win 8 when he turns his machine on...to put it simply :)

I use a windows phone which uses the same metro interface and live titles found in windows 8. They are going for a seamless interface phone, tablet and pc. I love my windows phone and think windows 8 will be huge.
-
'They are going for a seamless interface phone, tablet and pc' i think someone already does this , thats right its Apple , ;D sorry could not help myself i am an Apple person.

I wouldn't call the Apple experience seamless, it is a different app for each different o/s. With 8 it is one app across all platforms.
-
I use both Win7 and OSX (and Linux). IMO, Win7 was the best Win since XP.
XP was THE best windows. They have gone downhill from there.
With the latest OSX and IOS being so good.... it would take a great release of windows to even break even with apple.

Sorry, but I'm an apple man myself.

Windoze
V1 = well, new
V3 = crap
95 = ok
98 = crap
98SE = ok
ME = crap
XP = ok
Vista = crap
7 = ok
8 = seems to be a pattern here.
I'll keep running XP for as long as I can. does everything I want to efficiently once you clean out all the rubbish like Internet explorer,
Media Player, Messenger etc etc.

snip
Estelle that's not the case. It is designed as the next version of desktop/laptop OS that will also do tablets including ARM CPU based ones. It doesn't support phones. That is windows mobile 7 or 8
-
Loving the auto-correct and dictionary features of IE10 on Win 8. No more spelling errors in posts :)
-
Sorry... I went to apple recently and will never go back to windows. I have found windows, while flexible, to be really unreliable and a magnet for virus attacks and system faults.
Apple is pretty much a "you will only do it this way" in it's approach, but at least it's stable and reliable. It does what it says it will do.
Vale Microsoft Windows!!!
-
i think microsoft are victims of their own success.
xp was a pretty solid OS but lack of 64bit support pretty well sentenced it to a slow death,
windows 7 is a good solid 64 bit release and i have a feeling will be the bedrock of OSs for a long time,
win8 like the ribbon interface in the modern incarnations of Office are just change for changes sake.
macs are nice but really they cannot do any more than a PC.
for the record i use ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop and have 3 android 4 devices.
i have an xp Virtual machine and win7 Virtual machine i run in virtualbox on my desktop when required.
my laptop dualboots linux mint and win7,

IOS looks nothing like OSX. Need another paid for app for everything - in Windows or Windows Phone it's just a web page - and you don't have to pay for that...
Apple make good stuff, but it's not perfect. As they say, if it has wheels or code, it will give you sh*t >:D

For the Windows fans out there (and just so you know, we Windows users generally out-number Mac users by about 10:1), here's a GREAT article that talks through using Metro.
(I love the right-click on the bottom left corner and app switch on the top left ;D)

By the way, do you know that Microsoft sold more Windows Vista (yep Kangaron, that crap one) than there are iPads and MacBooks combined?!? ;D

For those that can be bothered http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/iso (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-AU/windows-8/iso)
I have not had one failure or blue screen, or hang on this Dell E6500 with Win7 64bit, Office 07, admin tools, citrix, VNC, FTP, Coffeecup etc etc used all day every day inc remote admin...
I keep hearing about 'clunky' and 'flawed' and 'I just wanna say what all the supposed kewl techno nerds say' but I never had an issue with Windows 7 or XP...
Windows 7 is probably the only Windows OS I'd buy since Windows 95.

I use W7, works a treat, but then I also had a good enough time with Vista. Possibly the only person apparently, but there you go. I hired the right sysadmins to set it up ;) .

You actually buy OS's?
I've been running W7x64 Ultimate on my clunker box at home (nephews handmedown gaming rig) for a while with no issues except for scanner devices. Doesn't like them or more actually can't find them. x32 version doesn't have the same problem so I run a vm when I want to scan. Upgraded from XP which I have had since 2002. 10 years is a looooonnnggg time for an OS. Gave Vista a big miss though.
Had a play with a Win8 Samsung Tab at JuiceIT last month. Very nice interface but as I had been using a Windows 7.5 phone for a while it was easy to get around.
M$ confirmed to us the other day that there is no guaranteed upgrade path for the Windows 7.5 to Win 8 phones so there could be some angry people out there if that happens. That backed us out of using Windows phones in our corporate environment. So we had to go with iphone 4 8G which was twice the price. Over 70 odd handsets it is a lot of money.

I think you'll find that is wrong information

I havent bought any software or OS in about .... well since I got the intewebs in mid 90's... :)
Work has actually bought a couple of things over time that they critically needed :cup:

Confirmed to us from Microsoft themselves. They didn't say that it wouldn't upgrade, just no guaranteed upgrade.

Please PM me the name of the person who confirmed this. This is incorrect and I'd like to chat to the individual involved. User upgradability is a key feature of Windows Phone.
The hardware must support the upgrade, so if you buy cheap and cheerful...

Amazed by Mac and for most users I doubt you can beat them for reliability. Our Mac has been going sweet for 3yrs. Not a virus, never had to reboot or reinstall.
Now our two windows laptops. Pure crap.

Bought a DELL Inspiron 6400 back in 2006 with XP
I was advised to reformat twice a year to eliminate bugs and delete 'junk' at the same time.
Still running, under those conditions but now finding the 'left click' button is becoming unstable, so now using wireless mouse.
I've never used an Apple but admit they have excellent screen clarity compared to some windows machines I've seen.
Then I spose it comes down to just how the machine is specified by the purchaser too ;D
I know with the Dell you could get various screens from the cheap and hard to see, up to the full HD whizzbang gear
I will 'look' at a Mac next time I upgrade :cheers:

That is the case. It is designed for Tablets or in their words - Touch screen compatible devices (Not including phones at this stage). There long term plan is to use this as the one OS including phones.

So much talk, so little facts :)

SWMBO has a Mac. There is always something going on that I need to attention. For example:
Runs slow - I ask when the last time it was restarted usually each night
Safari has quirks - latest being the close x icons dissappeared on the tabs so you can't close individually. They have appeared again by themselves
Battery never lasts long - run majority of time on wifi - always on charge and no not continuously all the time
Mail passwords need re-entering at least a couple of times a month
That's all I can think right now, painful quirks though!!
I have 3 other windows PC's throughout the house on win7 and don't have dramas.
Now I haven't ruled out Pebkac on the Mac but I generally find nothing wrong when I have to look at it. Just a matter of a reboot more often than not and away we go until the next time.....
-

Well that comes from our global account team so I'm inclined to believe them. And lets face it, you tend to post what ever you think as well with out much fact.

But D4D posts great jokes, so you have to go a bit easy on him ;D
( computers use lektricity, must be getting close to 12v )

Laptops run on 19V (mostly) so I guess that is 12V on steroids. Can we move this thread to the Electrical section maybe?

That adds cred to what I was spruiking earlier about upgrade paths. They are different OS's at the moment but are planned to merge later. How much later I wonder.
Add to that what the phone manufacturer thinks we need and upgrade paths go out the window.
One of the adds to 7.5 was the addition of wireless tethering which happened to phones released with 7.5 as the native OS but not some phones which were released on 7.0 and then upgraded to 7.5. Even though the manufacturer had promised it was a dead set cert on that particular model but didn't happen on my handset.

I just installed the updated Synaptics drivers for my HP Elitebook and I've notice that the track pad is a "touch-compatible" device! Pinch to zoom, swipe, etc. all works a treat in Windows 8 :D
-
Well I am still evaluating Win8 and so far it is OK... this version is a little buggie with my hardware as does not go to sleep when the top closes but that is no biggy and had frozen a couple of times but it is actually very easy to get around boots extremely quick still... And now Microsoft Surface has surfaced with big intel chipset to follow a few months later I am thinking Apple may get a wake up call....
But hey I am a "Half Full" man....
