As the heading says I find it quite amusing how some people criticise people buying imported products yet they will buy imported products themselves ???
Yes it all started with: why buy an imported camper as you are hurting the Australian industry. Hey but it's ok to buy imported clothes , shoes , vehicle parts etc.
Yes there are are large number of products that we buy imported but here is the question to ponder !!!
You want to buy an Australian product but the quality is not there but the price is great but there is an imported product that is a lot better quality but a lot more expensive ...what would you do !! Would you support the Australian market or buy the import !!
At the end of the day I don't care who buys what from where but like I mentioned some topics regarding buying from over seas are very amusing.

I buy what I want from where ever the hell I want it from, I am a very proud Australian and I support Australian products as much as I can , But at the end of the day it is my money and I spend it how and when I want. I do pay the aussie tax department nearly 50 k every year so as for supporting Australia, I think I do my bit.
-
Deja vu!!
Yep... oh joy, here we go again :P

Mark does make a good point. Another amusing thing is that we all know that the two big companies Coles and Woolworths now have a huge control over most things. >:D
It has been proven that their dominance of the fuel market is one reason why we all pay more, yet each day as I drive past a Woolworth's fuel outlet I see drivers lined up. In my town it is the busiest servo. So really we are partly to blame for what market we end up with. (I do not bother to use any of the Coles or Woolworths outlets.)
Another interesting thing. The Woolworth's servo is usually 4 cents a litre dearer than the servo I go to, in the same town. But my servo is nowhere as busy as the Woolworths one. It is interesting because on most occasions you only get 4 cents a litre off at the Woolworths servo.
Mind you, I do not practice what I preach as I usually buy my alcohol at Dan Murphy’s. It has the best range and is a lot cheaper than others. But I know, I should be supporting the smaller privately owned liquor stores. :-[

I buy (what I perceived to be) the better quality product regardless of the country of origin or price (with-in reason) .. IF I believed it suited my intended purpose

Well said Duggie !!
This thread was not designed to start any argument 8)
But to add reality to some of the constant childish comments that I think everyone was getting sick of about buying imports.
I think at the end of the day we all would love to buy Australian made products, support local farmers, support local small business owners but the fact is the majority of us will always shop on price, buy off eBay and complain that it was a crap product ;D buy imported products to save money etc
That's just life
Now where are those green pills I have been on ;D

There's two sides too this import giggle,
If you can buy the same item overseas a heap cheaper than here, then why not ?
Or do you buy a generic sub standard pile of sh!t copy (that looks the goods) and learn a lesson after paying more than what the purchase of an original quality proven item would have been, also putting the stain on our jobs and industry.
The nature of the beast is, WE ALL LOVE A BARGAIN so are prepared to take a chance in hope we can sprook our spoils.
IMO,
This were Aust standards should be stepping up to the mark and having a go.

I am an Australian manufacture that employs staff and I am the first to say that I buy stuff from overseas but all that people are comparing import tents to Aussie made is different to others because the import tents are not the same quality , unfortunately we are not all in the position with finances to buy Aussie made. I will say that the government should do more to level out the playing field. The important thing to remember is if u do buy import buy from a shop not eBay I hear of terrible story's of eBay purchases being really Shit and no one to contact. Sorry but I just needed to say my bit. It is a very controversial topic which should not be bought up on here anymore
-
I know, Mark, you can't win either way.
If I'd have bought a lesser price budget camper with a chinese tent, then there's all the warnings about "don't here or there, it will fall apart etc etc...., buy a oz made camper, sooo much better". Yep sure is.....$18k or $7k. Is it really that much better ??? Will most people really test your $7k chinese camper to destruction ???
I bought an Oz made camper, with all canvas oz made. Full hot dip Galv chassis - Alko 'off road' running gear (Ooooo).. This style of camper suited 4 months living on the road.
Turns out this camper gets bagged out too......something about Oz build quality ???
Turns out most of this scaremongering is by people trying to justify why they spent 10k more for a product that does the same thing....
Now, must remember when looking for tyres, not to consider BFG or coopers....after all, they are imported >:D
I'm with you McGirr - I'm not ducking for cover - bring it on >:D >:D >:D >:

As pretty much everything is made overseas now, maybe the label on items needs to be re-written to clarify a product from one that is simply made in China, to one that is made in China, but sold by an Australian.
-
I can buy a Black Wolf 300 turbo tent off Ebay from an Aussie supplier who has a shop front about $200 + cheaper than BCF or Rays, I think some businesses need to have a good look at how much they mark things up.
-
I've bought a Fiskar X25 Axe... $129.99 in Rays Outdoors. I've order it from the Amazon USA for $38 plus $15 for postage. Genuine Fiskar. If i can import it for less than $53, why are the importers marking it up so much. Even if i had to pay GST on it, that would still only be $58. Who comes up with this price tag?
I too would much rather touch and feel something before i but it, but the savings are too much to miss.
It is the same with mountain bikes... I can order parts and complete bikes from a UK website that has paid import duty and VAT in it's own country, shipped to Australia for 50% of the retail cost here.
-
If someone could show me good quality Australian made shoes I'd buy em.
May as well join the Jones'....

We do as consumers. we are told and told and told to support local aussie sellers, so they put a premium on it. as i previously said WE ARE BEING GROOMED......Honestly how can it cost 600+ to put a second plastic water tank? Can buy one from camec (Aussie company) plus all fittings for under $120.....Why do we let these companies do this? we have the power to change it.......
Cheers!!

OK here we go Australian made vs overseas imports bla bla bla bla bla bla pttf I'm over it :'(

I'm with ya gibbo301, topics like this can go on and on and on and on but a topic that gives everyone a laugh like the demotivational posters gets locked? ? ? ? At least every post was different. and yes ive got a cheap import because i cant afford australian made.

There is the rub, my local independent camping shop used to stock a well known imported brand, they now don't because you can buy the same product online $50 cheaper than they can buy it from the importer. I asked them if they could get close to the online price and they just told me to order it online.
I also don't feel I have the right to tell anyone how or where to spend their money ( however If you wish to throw it away, throw some my way). Spend what you can and enjoy it.

Hey, Australia is such a cosmopolitan country, what does it matter who buys what from where. Even if one buys from overseas, Australians are still being paid to deliver it to you by post. being a true Aussie is what is in the heart, not where one originated from, nor is it where a product came from. I believe Toyota, Nissan and most other cars did not originate in Australia, but are being used to travel this beautiful country of ours.

Tjupurula

.....and that should be the final word. Hear hear Tjupurula, well said mate. We are all here (on Myswag) for the same reason, it doesn't matter what you do it in or where it came from, just get out there and enjoy it.

Well why does it get brought up all the time??? Maybe you could introduce rich, medium and poor sections . . . . And have an australian made camper owner section so everyone in it can feel good about themselves

Here's something to put a spin on things...............
If a bloke buys a 2nd hand Aussie Made CT, is he supporting Aussie industry ???
I suggest less Aussies gain from a bloke buying a 2nd hand Aussie CT, than from a bloke buying an imported CT ???
Horrible bastards that lot who buy gear 2nd hand, they do fark all for the country!!!
Even worse are those dodgy expat workers who don't even pay income tax in Aus.............. :cup:
;D

Unfortunately, theres now been a stop put to that. Any Australian 'resident', is now liable to pay tax in Australia, for any income earned anywhere. Law has been passed. Only get away with it for a short time.
As a non resident, its still clear, paying a set rate. But as a resident, no such joy of being tax free.
Puts a stop to all those overseas mine/rig workers working offshore and supporting a family here, kids at school etc.
One of the reasons its not so fiscally benefitial working overseas. Hard time to convince ATO that I'm a non resident, while my wife is living here.
Unfortunately, just spending 6 months out of country in the year doesnt cut it anymore apparently.
Good luck.

Yep, however i pay my tax to the "honourable" PNG Gov.... and they do the right thing by me and take a sh*tload..... just so i don't have to bother paying anymore in Aus...very kind of them really :D ....
Anyway....... back to McGirrs mighty amusing topic.... ;D

The sad fact is that sometimes you can buy exactly the same product online but for much less cost - case in point was a pair of shoes from o/s for me ($120 in the stores here but only $60 online and delivered) or books. Don't get me started on my experience with an aussie online bookseller compared with the major O/S one... ::)
Yes, perhaps the government could have charged GST on my purchase, but it is also a fact that it would cost them a Sh... er, ... bucket load, to enforce that level of taxation. The tax limits are there in the name of cost/benefit for the Government. It would cost them more to enforce than they get back in revenue to chace so many small imports.
But then you also risk getting ripped off with online purchases. For electronic goods you might not get a warranty, or you may get just plain crap for your money.
For me, there are some really good Aussie online retailers - clothes are a case in point (shoes notwithstanding ;D ) But I will always buy whitegoods, Electronic goods, food and furniture in a store. Maybe not local, but I'll go for what I peerceive as the best option. Make up your own mind.
'nuff said. I'm moving on.
-
Is the discussion about supporting Aussie manufacturers or Aussie retailers?
There's just not that much that's actually made here any more. Saying "well you bought a Prado so you can't comment on Aussie Made vs Imports" is silly. Show me an Aussie made equivalent to any of the 4wds we use? Same with nearly everything we use in our everyday lives now. We really don't have any choice in a lot of things but to buy imports. When there's an Aussie made equivalent of something you want to buy, at least give it some consideration. Otherwise, the heritage we leave for our children are jobs saying "would you like fries/All Terrains/whatever with that?"
-
I actually don't understand why it would cost a fortune to administer the collection of 10% GST (??)
Wouldn't it be as simply as when you pick up your parcel from the post office, they just charge 10% of the declared value prior to collection??
And with couriers, the same thing. You are expecting an order, so you have to logon to their website and pay the 10% prior to delivery.
How hard can that be??
-
Because of the economy of scale. As an example, if I buy a book from Amazon at $25 then GST is just $2.50
There is more than one person and several departments/agencies/companies involved in processing my GST transaction, but for simplicity lets assume it's just one person and leave out all the overheads of employing that person or overtime rates etc.
Assume, albeit generously, that processing time to process my parcel including identify the contents, calculate, gather and remit that money through the accounts system would be 15 minutes. After we are government workers... ;D If somone is being paid around $48k per annum (Based on ABS average aussie weekly earning stats) that equates to roughly $33 an hour, or around $8.25 salary for the 15 minutes work.
So, by my (very rough) reckoning it would cost the government an additional $5.75 for me to buy a book from Amazon if they charged GST. And my purchase is one of thousands of extra parcels to process every day.
-
This thread is getting way to 'technical now?!?!
-
Ok. That's fair enough. I can see now why they set the $1000 limit now.
-
Hey Duggie can you get me a job with a pay like yours.
Bert

Well all through the years the world has been changing................and things are just not the same as they was............but guess what ?? Its still all going to be OK !!
So long as we love and respect one another xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox
And yes, I to want a job with pay like Duggie...........nurses don't earn big money...........but not in it for the money.
