Title: Hessian sacks for Beach or mud recovery
Post by: Wortho on May 06, 2012, 08:21:22 PM
Saw this tip on the AULRO forum. Carry half or dozen or so empty hessian (potato) sacks when beach or mud driving, if you get stuck fill the sacks with sand or dirt and place them in front (or preferably under) the bogged wheel(s). Its supposed to work a treat and with a few you can make a track out of the sand bags to get you out of trouble. Lightweight and easy to store and also biodegradable if you have to leave some behind on a muddy track for the blokes behind  :D
I have always had a couple in the trailer for firewood etc but never thought to use them in a recovery situation. You can buy them in bulk on ebay for a couple of dollars a piece. Not tried them yet but I can imagine they would work well in getting something firm under the wheels.

Cheers

Trust AULRO to come up with that idea, I'd rather use my Warn :)

but on a beach, I would have thought a winch is not a lot of use when in the loose sand  :'(

those Maxtrax planks look the way to go on beaches where there's no anchor point for a winch

Mainey, I prefer to use a SsangYong as a winch anchor when I am in the sand :)

Unless you have a sand anchor of course. :)

Geees you cant just use an old sack to exrtact yourself , What you really need is an overpriced , overhypted , blow moulded board thats looks like a kid with a bad spray tan & pimples ., Sometimes the old ways still do wirk just as well for much less

This exact method got our old Toyota Stout farm ute out of lots of trouble grow up....2 x spud bags about quarter full of whatever you were bogged in and the handbrake a bit more than half on and got out of most places you would get stuck in a 2WD, then got a Landcruiser 40 series ute to replace the Stout.....got bogged more in the Landcrusier than we ever did in the 2WD stout, the false sense of security being in a "go anywhere 4x4" bought you undone ever time.

I'd say it was the handbrake half on that got the LSD working rather than the spund bags...

Don't think our 68 model had a LSD......didn't have much of anything after 20 years on a dairy farm.....plenty of rust though !!!

We used a rubber backed picnic blanket to get a Sigma Wagon off the green wet grassy slope one day, it worked ok. Destroyed the blanket though.

I can remember as a kid, back in the dark ages, carrying strips of old carpet about 2 feet wide and 6 feet long to use as bog mats, I think similar things were done during the old "red-x" trials, that worked too

NOW hANG ON A TICK  Just how can you compaie todays bogs to those that slowed the RedX Boys down . In the RedX Rally if you wanted 4WD you had to weld 2 cars together . There was a lack of toys like we have like lockers , GPS , air con , cd , uhf , etc  However they did have hession bags to stuff under the car when it got stuck .
Gees young people today ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ::)

I don't think spend around 1% of the value of my 4WD on MaxTrax is a bad investment
