Title: cleaning mildew off canvas
Post by: glenngtho on April 07, 2012, 07:10:30 AM: Just looking for some advice on how to clean mold and mildew off the canvas of our camper trailer. Not sure if I should use a weak solution of bleach bit worried it will take the colour out.Has anyone had any success using any other products.

Fortunately it hasn't been an issue with our camper canvas. :)

The Missus, who does not like toxic chemicals, has researched and found that oil of cloves is the go to treat mould. She's done all the cupboards, washed the clothes with it & so on.

And it does seem to work. ;)

Perhaps Google it & see what you think.

Im not to keen on using any chemicals on it. pretty sure sunlight helps kill most mold. might try some of these natural things. maybe vinegar and water in a spray bottle. haven't got a lot of mold, but a few spots will spread I reckon.

Try Preen Oxy Action in the hot pink spray bottle. Spray on, give it a light scrub with a stiff brush, then hose off. I have also used a microfiber cloth to aid in getting it 'rinsed' off.

This product was recommended by the manufacturer of our trailer when we got a bit of mould and really did the trick.

Post by: Squalo on April 09, 2012, 11:40:23 PM: Salt water works - mix up a mild salt mixture in a trigger bottle and go to work, let it dry in sunlight, then repeat. Afterwards you need to wash it down with clean water, and it might be worth wrapping any metal work that might be hit before you start.

Caveat, I have no idea whether this affects weatherproofing, but it worked beautifully to solve a minor mould problem on mine (12oz Aus canvas) and I've since had it out in a reasonable shower with no water ingress through the canvas.

Used half and half vinegar and water in a spray bottle and just used a bannister brush to give it a light brush its come up great, and the vinegar smell faded quickly.
All ready for our first trip away in our new pre-loved camper taking the 2 days off after anzac day and having a 5 day weekend at Mooloolaba throwing the kayaks on the Ranger and going after some taylor.
