My computer has a virus, according to the heavily accented gentleman who called today.
So, vaguely recognizing the accent, I proceeded to try to discuss with him the merits of a certain cricket team who toured our fair land this summer.
I mentioned terms like "hasbeens" , "oldfarts" , and "overrated" amongst others, and that seem to get his attention.
A little silence, then off he went again about some virus.
I interrupted, he was quiet, so I casually asked,
"how much did you lose betting on them this season,"
Silence.
An unrecognizable word.
Then he hung up.
My computer still has a virus it seems.

That's my tactic most of the time too, amazing how patient they are sometimes.
I have occasionally put the phone up to the smoke alarm and set it off too.

I've told all my family members to just tell them that they are running Ubuntu and hang up.
Had a nice discussion with one at the cabin on our other property. There is no computer there and never has been, we talked for 30 odd minutes.

Some really good replies there, I just put the phone down on the bench and walk away letting them talk on to no-one!

One call I had was from someone claiming to be from some company (cannot remember the name) who represented some sort of long lost tax return recovery .
She had details of an old mis-calcultaed tax return for me, it seems the ATO had made an error, and If I gave her my name, age address, and bank details, I could my $4100 refund straight away.
I was so excited (as I was googling the name she said) got a result in.000003 of a second (not that i needed it) and became more and more hysterical about my windfall, so hysterical in fact I became completely unresponsive to her repeated calls for me to calm down, I forget to give her any of my details.
I hope she calls again, that was fun,
Shane

I used to work in a IT Helpdesk, and I have few of the training recordings... I usually put the phone down next to a speaker and turn on one of them... it sounds enough like someone trying to talk to them that they stay on the phone for ages...

This topic is a crack-up ;D
I've just printed it off and left it by the phone for Mrs Squalo.

We received a letter a few weeks ago from a lawyer in Spain.
We are the last relative from a deceased aunt and he was glad he found us.
The "auntie" had left a big sum of money (around $900,000) and the will stated that 10% needs to go the charity. As his fee: 50% of the remaining sum.....
Yeah, right.

I had one at work on hold for 47 minutes waiting for the manager every couple of minutes i would ask them to hold as the manager wants to talk to them - so now at work we have a game going on how long we can keep them on the phone

This is one of the things that I do at work also. After being on hold for a bit the phone starts beeping as a reminder to us so I just pick it up and ask them to wait a bit longer, after a bit transfer them to someone else in the office who then puts them on hold while they finish another phone call... It is so fun!
