Sitting around the campfire last weekend and a lively debate started around the cost involved in activating a plb.
If you are broken down in a remote area, everyone is ok, but you can't go anywhere and you activate the epirb are you going to get a big fine or charge?
I am having trouble finding out the answer but would love to know.
Anyone able to help?
Cheers

I will watch this with some interest, not knowing the answere but I would not attempt a trip in remote areas without my epirb. I would rather pay a hefty fine after been rescued than perish without been found.

Some idiots have been charged with setting them off as a hoax and I believe they should be charged the cost of the ensuing search.
If set off for a real life emergency you won't normally get charged.
If you accidently set it off, let the authorities know what happened ASAP

I think common sense has to prevail here, if you're out in the middle of no where, broken down with the kids and missus, I doubt you would be charged or fined for setting one off if you felt it was your only option, after all that's why they are sold and why it's dumb not to take one.
If it could be proven you were negligent or totally unprepared, they might have grounds to make you pay part or all of the costs involved.
If you were to set it off for sh1ts and giggles, then you'd have to expect to be fined AND have to pay any and all costs involved.
