Title: Second hand Trackabout for sale.
Post by: duggie on March 13, 2012, 07:25:02 PM
Hi I was in Atherton, (100km west of Cairns) doing a bit of shopping today and I noticed a notice on a for sale board about a second hand Trackabout Camp Trailer for sale. I did not get the number but if anyone is interested I am going down the hill to Atherton again tomorrow and I can get some more details. I am sure that the add was asking $5,500.00 for a 5 year old set up.

PM me if you would like or phone me 0439962280
Cheers duggie.

Hi Peoples,

I went back down the hill to Atherton today and went back to the notice board.
My bad, the Trackabout is only 4 years old and the asking price of $5,500.00, the phone number on the add is 0417195785.
I spoke to the owner and it sound like it could be the deluxe 4x4 model, without electric brakes and is fitted with 3 new tyres.
To view this trailer you will need to travel to Wondecla via Herberton.
It sound like a great deal for some one chasing a very good camp trailer.
cheers duggie

Cheers all.

Yes I thought the price to be great and didnt want to mess around. Still unclear what model it is, pictures are not the best. It is earlier than previously thought. About 2004.

I really wanted a trakshak as that would have suited us better. I may try and find a trakshak top somewhere down the track and put it on.

I wont see the trailer for about a month, current owners are heading off to Darwin and I am not in Tennant until beginning of April.

First mod will be electric brakes. Does anyone know how hard it is?

Cheers
OBJ

Hi outbackjack, Congratulations on your purchase. I did not think that the trailer would last long on the market after I had posted it up.
Cheers duggie and oh yea GO THE TRACKABOUT ;D

Congrats OutbackJack!!

Well done. Looks like an early model Safari to me, with the gusseted drawbar.

Electric brakes are really easy. Buy the kit online and either weld on the backing plates, or have a fab shop do that step for you. It's really not difficult though.

Great work!
Matto :)

Its a delux tourer with the strengthened drawbar.  ;D

The tare weight on this model back in 2004 was around the 450kg at a guess.

Thanks all.

I am still not sure on Year of Manufacture. It was advertised as being 4 or 5 years old. But the pictures sent to me was from 2005 on its first trip. It was owned by a old couple and I guess time as slipped. So my best guess is 2004 or 2005.

It has a kitchen which i think is a drifta and a water tank underneath. Apart from that I don't know much more.

Is there someone in Cairns who could do the brakes? It will be easier in Cairns than Tennant Creek. Might get the bearings etc checked out.

I am putting electric brakes on more to do with control than the weight. I have no experience with CT, but have read that in certain scenarios the trailer can push the tug. If you have electric brakes, this is more likely not to happen.

You will also need a brake controller installed in the car.

Cheers,

Yes I have a P3 in the Patrol already. I put it in about 2 or 3 months ago. I will be towing a 24ft van from Newcastle to Tennant at the end of the month.

On another note. how hard is it to change the  strengthened drawbar for a bit more length? I would like to try and put the spare at the back and put a bigger box on the front for batteries. Also would like to put a Bike rack some how on the front. I will need someone to make one I guess.

Hi All,

Not going ahead with this purchase.

I put a deposit down. I then  requested a VIN Number and Month/Year of manufacture. This took owners a week to do. I recieved a email with the VIN and a rough date of Sept 05. I sent an email requesting a picture of the VIN plate, this would make it easier etc. Got told its too hard to pull trailer out as its buried in the shed. I was then told via email it was all too hard and they have some one offer them more money locally and good luck with buying a trailer in  the future? WTF??? I thought we had a deal?

So now looking again for another trailer.

I'm sorry but that's just not on at all. As far as I'm concerned a deal is a deal.  >:(

There's been a few times that I've been on the selling end of things and while you would certainly like the extra dough from the higher offer, once there's an agreement that's it, game over and you're true to your word.

I'm very sorry to hear it. I bet you are pee'd off!

Here's hoping something else comes along soon.

Cheers & all the best - Wayne

Yes, not happy. But them the breaks I guess. I have been in the same position in the past, agreed on a price etc, had someone offered more later, but always stuck to the orginal buyer.

They seem like nice people, but just didnt want to bother pulling trailer out of the shed at the moment. When I asked about date of manufacture etc they where a little vague. I understand this, sometimes I cant remember what year something was built etc. However they told me they couldnt even get to the VIN plate, to much clutter around it.

I am sure they are genuine people, but I didnt really want to pay the full amount with out seeing picture of VIN plate and getting the dates etc.

Yeah I can under stand that once bitten twice shy.. It was a reasonable price but some times those who seem genuine are far from it when it comes to cars trailers or anything mechanical unfortunately people get stung and the old its berried in the shed could mean the rodents have got to it and with out current pics that would have been a risk for the buyer sight unseen

There's a Camprite TL1 camper $7500 on ExporOz that took my fancy.  ;D

Sounds like a well kitted out unit.  :D

Maybe I should just let you get over the loss of the other bargain?  :-[

This trailer was advertised in the Cairns Post today. Still asking $5.5k. Couldn't be arsed driving out to Wondecla, so I bought the Tambo that was also in there today.  ;D

I will have a Safari on the market in the near future. I will be taking it out over Easter and will take some photos including compliance plate. It will be available from Darwin. Price will be 6k. Keep an eye on the classifieds.

Hi All,

Bummer about that but it might be for the best as you want a Trakshack.  There were two or three trakshaks on Perth gumtree a few weeks back if you don't mind freighting it.  Could be worth checking.

Cheers,

Cheers all.

What year was it advertised in the Cairns Post?

They told me they had a buyer with a better offer and they was going with them? So I wonder what happened?

People did seem genuine enough, just a little slack in the detials for the CT. I never did get a correct date out of them. To be honest she did send me email to say I had 24 hrs to continue with the deal. I nevered bothered. If they cant be bothered to take trailer out of the shed and send some decent emails or at the least give correct date when built etc.

I wonder if it was a marine engineer or oil rig worker? Now that would make you feel better about getting dudded!

Didn't state a year. Advert is

Camper Trailer Off road 4x4 Trackabout full annexe, fold out kitchen, good cond $5500 ono. 0417195785

Sounds like Bongo's trailer will be a bit closer for you and is within spitting distance of the price of this one. Personally, I prefer the Safari to the Deluxe. Good luck with your search.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I have always worked on the premise that a quote is a quote is a quote.  If I state a price, then I stick with it, and if a deposit is paid on something, and I accept the deposit, then I am actually legally obligated to honour the deposit.  That is in a business sense anyway, I would have thought if someone accepts a deposit, they have entered into a legal contract, whether paper be signed or not.  Taking the deposit on the CT would have meant some form of obligation surely.

Hi Peoples,
I would like to comment on this and say that at no way when I posted up the add for sale or at any other point since posting have I had any thing to do with the sale/non sale of the said trailer. I do not know the people who had the trailer up for sale. I saw the add and I thought that some one on this forum may want a cheep Trackabout. Please do not and I will admit that no one has, hold me responsible in any way.

Thanks and cheers duggie

No you did the right thing. I do think these people may be genuine, however I never seen the add, It took a while to get a suggested build date of around Sept 05, about 7  years old. That made a difference to me. I wanted the extended drawbar and also was happy that they couldnt get a picture of the VIN for me as it was too hard to get out of the shed?
