Title: Tractor and camper
Post by: Wunderlust on March 11, 2012, 10:51:59 PM
Ok, minding my own business in dwellingup this morning having a breaky on the high street then along the road comes a farm tractor towing a camper trailer! Now usually I'd have thought, someone was moving the trailer from on place to another, but this was different, the tractor had a few mods...
1. Spare rear wheel tractor tyre on the roof off the cab.. Estimated weight 400kg
2. Jerry cans (water and diesel) on the back of the tractor.
3. Treg hitch on the tractor!

Ok - it was bizarre and not a small tractor, however got me thinking.. For the ultimate go anywhere vehicle a tractor would probably be up there, so why not.. Genius!

There are a group of people who travel like that. I posted a while ago a Chamberlain tractor with a very old Cub camper seen in the Hunter in NSW and I think he is a local. Some of the Chamberlains had bench seating for 2 and a gearbox that allowed them to travel at above 60 kph. They do ralleys throughout Australia.

My wife's uncle has restored a 9G Chamberlain, and gets out on these treks.
It's a noble pastime, restoring and using these things. They're keeping alive the history from a time when Australians actually made something.

Interesting side note...........
Alan Hawker (Bob) Chamberlain was related to Harry Hawker, of "Hawker Hurricane" fame.
Hawker was Chamberlain's uncle (his mother's brother).........

Well, I found it interesting, anyway..........

I am happy to help out any member who wants to buy a tractor for this purpose; 33HP-100HP models available  8).

I love my tractors but wouldn't give up the Cruiser for one.

Thanks for posting that, it is very interesting.

Sounds a bit like the John Williamson "Emu" story - I can just hear the conversation between nephew and uncle - " well she can't fly but I'm telling you it can plough the pants off a kangaroo"  ;D

I know a bloke that lives just out of Dwellingup that collects and restores old tractors he is in some sort of tractor club and they do the tractor and camper thing once a year, 2 years ago was the gibson desert , i think they were planning the gibb river road last year , not sure where to this year as I no longer sell him parts for his many tractor , but they're a bunch of cashed up ex farmers that have some sort of weird fixation over tractors .
