Hi everyone,
Live on a farm in the Central West of NSW. Used to own a 4WD Pajero and get out camping/fishing fairly regularly, but it has broken down and was replaced by a commodore sedan since that was all I could find in good nick for my budget (and within some very tight time constraints), so the camping has been reduced to whenever I can hitch a ride or borrow a 4wd. Looking forward to the day I can get rid of it and get another off-roader and get out a bit more again.
Found the forum recently since the parents are looking at getting a camper trailer and asked me to look around. It's looking like we'll end up with a new Bluetongue semi-offroad, but still looking. Found a Camptime trailer online around the same price as the Bluetongue but with far more extras, just not sure on the quality of workmanship.

They are both bigger tents (15 ft & 18 ft),
Get your parents to think about a smaller tent IMO, if there's only the two of them. Have heard reasonable reports about the bluetongue, not aware of the other,

Thinking about a 4 week trip through central QLD this year with the 3 of us. After that it will be 2 person (me and dad) weekend fishing trips plus a 1 week trip with 4+ per tent currently (and a small tent city going on), potential round Aus trip with the 2 of them if mum doesn't mind the 4 week trip. Will have to replace the 25 year old cabin style tent we current take on the 1 week trip, it's getting quite threadbare, and since it sleeps 6 (usually only 4 for comfort reasons though) we'll need a fair bit in the camper.

Heading to Rubyvale, near Emerald, with the Grandparents to have a look for some gems.
Staying at Caravan parks (they have an old caravan they'll be taking) the entire time so fairly cushy trip.

Found another that I like the look of, and it's located close to my cousin's place in Sydney so will be pretty easy to get an eyeball on one next time I visit.

The construction quality doesn't seem to be great, but the materials specified match up to others. Might need a bit of work once bought to bring up to scratch?

Welcome to MySwag, hope you find the camper that`s right for you. If you`re coming to Sydney you might like to check out Southern Cross Trailers at Penrith. Scott has been building trailers for about 20 years and is excellent to deal with. We`ve had our camper for two and a half years and have no complaints with it. I think they are using different tents now, ours is an Austrack.
Our camper has never been under cover, here`s a recent pic.

Almost wish I hadn't found the site now :(
Looking through all the stuff and searching various models of trailers has lead me to wanting to build my own, mostly for the challenge, partially to make sure it is exactly how I would want to use it.
Might have to sign up for a welding course at the local Tafe and/or see if the uni that accepted me for engineering still wants me 5 years later, my current experience is welding together some scrap metal about 8-10 years ago when I wouldn't stop pestering an uncle that was welding up a broken something or other to let me weld something. My design and building experience in general is more diverse, no doubt I could produce a workable design, but my ability to give it shape would be in question. Of course I could just take the design to someone with the skill and gear to get it done, but that's no fun ;)
At the moment I'd never get approval from the parents and I haven't got the $$$ to build my dream camper. I might end up drawing up some fairly convoluted plans to go in "one day" box with a new 4WD though.
Why is it that the more you know about something it both becomes an obsession (something you love) and an annoyance (something you hate)? Seems to be the way with everything, the people that don't think about it seem to have far more fun, yet also don't get the most out of it.
Before reading up on the trailers I'd have been happy with a base model such and such brand with no extras as long as it looked like good quality gear, now I want everything and probably wouldn't be happy if I got it because I'd still be looking for more things I could add to it or change.

Johnyd89 how's it going? Welcome to myswag. We found it difficult to select a camper, there are almost too many options. :) Have fun researching. We found hiring a CT for a week or so as we went on different hols allowed us to evaluate things pretty well. Doesn't cost too much either. :)

Doesn't seem to be many options locally, Dubbo is the closest place to home and only seems to have Johno's campers, which are out of the budget. The more money that gets spent on hiring to test out takes away from what can be spent on the camper itself.

Dosen't matter what you have to go camping in, it's the going camping thats important.
