Slightly off topic for a Camper Trailer forum....
Friends of ours have HUGE caravans, at least it seems like it to me.
When they say a caravan is a 23 footer, how is this measured? Is it the length of the whole rig from tow hitch to tail or just the length of the box on the frame?
Cheers
Chris.

Pretty sure its the box on the frame mate :)

Yeah, it is just the measurement of the physical part of the van, not the draw bar.

We have just started researching caravans and have asked this same question of a number of owners and dealers and they say that if a caravan is said to be say 18 foot, that means it is 18 foot inside, wall to wall. Does not include, for example, a front boot, so the actual length will be longer, you have to add the draw bar and any rear racks. Kevin

Yep that is corect, for example my Expanda is what Jayco call a 16-49-3 16ft, no idea what the 49 refers to just a model number i guess and the 3 is the layout number of that model.
Looking at the spec sheet its overall "Travel" lenght is 20'11" "Extended" lenght is 23'10"
