One of the day trips I was planing on doing was a trip up to Sandy Cape. We were up there over Christmas and this is what it looked like. I will still be giving it a go as conditions can change on a daily basis on Fraser. Some other members may have some more recent updates.
Entrance to Nigala rocks form the Orchid Beach side. You can't see it in this pic but there was a bit of rock hopping to get into the usual entrance to Nigala rocks.

It was still very soft and boggy even though it was wet.

Once you got around this small issue Browns Rocks was a a couple of hundred meters of rock hopping and who knows from there. The tide wasn't right so we headed back to Waddy Point for a swim and a BBQ.

Having said all that the pay off is worth it .... fishing can be out of this world (I have caught Yellow tail king fish, GT's ect off the beach). Perfect place to swim (just keep an eye out for the sharks including big tigers). Not to mention the Light house ;D

I cant believe nagal rocks could change so quickly, we used the original track in september and you were there in december and you cant use it anymore. Mother nature at its best, but it doesnt help when the rangers dont do maintance on the track anymore either.

You should see it from the air! I have been lucky enough to have flown in a rescue helicopter from the Sandy Cape Light House to Double Island Point. (Previous work related, well someone had to do it! ;D) And yes, inside the light house is fascinating. That island is unbelievable. We are camped at Burrum Heads at the moment and were talking to a fellow camper yesterday who use to work in the logging industry on the island in the 70's. He said there are some valleys on the island where no one gets to go and the trees there, still to this day, are amazing. Kevin

There's so many places on that island your not allowed to go into anymore it's a real shame

I drove up there a few years back , and camped around the top of sandy cape. MAGIC SPOT! In oct the turtles come and nest up there and it is amazing to wander along the beach at night, and see them laying. We stopped to help a bloke who was bogged at Ngkala rocks (where the great whole is in your picture) in a pathfinder with NO recovery gear. He wasnt too keen on shovelling either - nor were his family sitting in the car. We tried one snatch recovery, but it was too soft, and he was too bogged. We ended up leaving him when the ranger turned up ... he was giving him an earful as we left ... lol
Cheers Chippy :D
