Title: Warragamba Dam set to spill over

With the predicted rain falls the experts are saying the Warragamba Dam is set to spill over. After seeing the Dam last year with the new spill way, I would love to see water going over the top.

In the above link the second photo shows the new spill way to the left of the old wall. The excess water will run down the spillway and in theory shoot up the ramp and shoot over the roadway below and into the river bed below.

Should look good I reckon.

Yeah should look good.  If it does and the cloud base is high enough I am going to grab a plane and go for a fly over the dam.  It is a nice flight up and over the dam on a nice day but I have never seen water flowing over it so should make for some nice and interesting photos.

Cheers

Yep definitely want to see photos and interested to see what sort of erosion the spillway causes at it shoots into the river bead

I reckon you guys may get your wish for photos of it spilling over

I was down at Wombeyan on the weekend and the Wollondilly river was flowing well, though not flooding,it will sure be flowing to the dam,  funny though crossing it at the Goulburn end on the way home there was bugger all flow.

good luck to those down stream of Warragamba

Warragamba, Wyangala and Burrinjuck all predicted to fill and spill in the next 4 days. Blowering is already spilling, the Tumut Caravan Park was evacuated yesterday.

There are 6 foot long eels in Warragamba that have been waiting for 20 years to run to sea and spawn. They will be in for a wild ride but they will go if the water spills.

Ahhh, no it wont
The new spillway is a catastrophic device to save the Dam in an extreme event
The 5 radial gates in the centre of the Dam will release the water over 100% capacity
Gate 5  (the large centre one) will be opened at around 8am this morning as an exercise prior to dam reaching capacity between 6pm and 10pm tonight

Saturday will be the best day to see the release in full roar, on current conditions, water release should continue through to next Tuesday

Well that's not very exciting.  Just read they were going to open the gate as a tester.  They also said the gates automatically open when  water level reaches 80mm above the wall height, will that still reach the new spill way?

Anyone know how the desalination plant is going grrrrrrrrrr

http://au.news.yahoo.com/nsw/latest/a/-/latest/13048169/sydney-dams-full-but-desal-plant-still-pumping/ (http://au.news.yahoo.com/nsw/latest/a/-/latest/13048169/sydney-dams-full-but-desal-plant-still-pumping/)

The New South Wales Premier has blamed the former Labor government for the continued operation of Sydney's desalination plant, despite predictions Warragamba Dam will soon overflow.

Sydney's dam levels have been steadily rising over the past few months.

They are now at 87.1 per cent of capacity, but the Sydney Desalination Plant has still been pumping out 90 million litres of water a day.

Sustainability researcher Stuart White, from the University of Technology Sydney, says more rain could see Warragamba Dam overflow.

"That is highly likely and the Warragamba system or the Sydney dam system can fill very rapidly, as we know from previous years," Professor White said.

Greens MP John Kaye says that means the desalination plant should be switched off.

He has calculated the current cost of the plant's operation.

"That plant is costing us almost $340,000 a week," Dr Kaye said.

Premier Barry O'Farrell agrees, but says the Government's hands are tied.

"There is a contract entered into by the former government that if varied required taxpayers to stump up compensation. A stupid contract entered into by the former Labor government," he said.

"We shouldn't have to have this sorry mess where not only do we have rainfall and not only do we have water storages at 100 per cent, but we have a Labor desal contract that says we have to continue to buy water.

"If the contract is scrapped there's compensation payable."

The Finance Minister Greg Pearce announced this afternoon the plant's output would be halved to 45 million litres a day.

His media release makes no mention of whether compensation was paid, but he says the plant cannot be wound back any further because of the plant is still in its warranty period.

Mr O'Farrell would not guarantee the plant will be switched off in June, when the two year "proving period" that requires it to remain operating ends.

Gotta love DC wiring and politics. All we need now is some religion and were good to go......... ;D

Just mucking around.
What I would love to know is if anyone is planning a trip out there to watch it and photograph it?

I'd love to go, but work won't let me.
Can't wait to see some pics tommorrow night....

Warragamba Dam is full and is starting to spill
2 March 2012, 6:52PM AET
Warragamba Dam is at 100%
Due to heavy rainfall in the catchment area over the past few days, the dam is now at 100% capacity and is reportedly starting to spill.

For more information go to the Sydney Catchment Authority website www.sca.nsw.gov.au (http://www.sca.nsw.gov.au)

It is anticipated that with the dam spilling overnight, an Evacuation Order may be issued for Gronos Point, Pitt Town Bottoms and Parts of Richmond Lowlands on Saturday. It takes several hours for the water to travel downstream so during that time we need to assess the potential impact on the affected communities. It’s also not practical to evacuate people in the middle of the night particularly when you’re moving people with special needs. Given that these areas have already been subject to Evacuation Warnings for the past couple of days and with the estimated time of impact being several hours away from when the Evacuation Order will be issued, residents will be given adequate time to prepare their homes and leave the area.

AFTER days of anticipation Warragamba Dam has finally reached 100 per capacity and water is spilling over the wall.
Just before 7pm (AEDT), water began gushing down a 100m spillway into a pond below.
The pond acts as an energy dissipater, slowing the water before it flows down the Warragamba River to join the Hawkesbury-Nepean system.
Several kilometres away, the lookout observatory was packed with more than 100 spectators. Some had been waiting there for more than five hours.
"I came with my two boys to have a look," Ingrid Jouke from Glenmore Park said.
"It looks so high and I didn't expect that I'd see these gates open," she said.
"I've heard this spill from the dam can potentially create misery for some people, but maybe they can control how much is released."

About 1000 residents in north western Sydney have been ordered to evacuate as water gushing from the overflowing Warragamba Dam swells the Hawkesbury-Nepean River.

Last night, the main drum gate holding back Warragamba Dam was opened for the first time since 1998

Warragamba Dam spills over
02 Mar, 2012 07:52 PM
Warragamba Dam has tonight reached full capacity following days of heavy rainfall across NSW.
It is the first time in 14 years that Warragamba Dam, Sydney's primary water source, has spilled over.

When the Warragamba Dam is 80 millimetres above its full storage level, the drum gate will open automatically.

If the water keeps rising, the four radial gates open at 23 centimetres above full storage level.

The progressive gates would help to control the flow of water, the Sydney Catchment Authority said on its website.

This event highlights the amount of new residents making the Penrith Valley their home (unfortunatley).
Ive lived here for 30 years, seen all this before many times over as a kid.
Been on the river right up in the top channel not far from the base of the dam wall even when water was being released.
Theirs unbeliveable water rapids happnin right now, no one will ever see unless by air or on the water.

An even like this brings beautifull Trout into the Nepean waters released from the dam, big arse Bass, Cat fish.
top fishn after the flood settles, and as Jason B says bad arse rog eels will hit the main swimming area's and thrive.

The Nepean River and Nepean valley was a nice quiet, majestic, clean river and place and hardly polluted years ago, its a %uckin disaster now.

Flood Hard and long you bitch, its needed.

Global warming is so 2 years ago. Its climate change now, It can easily then be used to explain rain and cold events.

I have just returned from the central coast after leaving Bathurst on Friday about 20 minutes before all roads out were cut. What an awesome site water every where. All of these silted up crap little streams actually getting a good flush out will do them wonders.

We crossed the Nepean and the Hawkebury and the flow was obvious from the fresh. The river was coloured up as was ocean beach at Umina. it was as brown as highlighting how much fresh was in the system.

This will do wonders for the fish and the wild life that rely on our rivers. Global warming and climate change, are a croc aimed at softening us up to pay more tax. These events only hapen every 20, 30 - 50 years but I am glad I here to see it.

Regards

Thanks for the photos Cloud Basher, gives a bit of scale to the river.  I can't imagine how much rain would be needed to get the dam level up for it to go over the new spill way, but it would be an awesome sight
